https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y2VP3C7 I got this little thing based off recommendation from a person I met at the gym after I told him I have nowhere near the confidence to have someone come hold my phone while I squat in the 400s

For newbies I suggest the Dolica a lot. It's not going to be your forever tripod, but it's got some features and if you're kind to it it shouldn't cause any problems. It'll give you something decent to use while you figure out exactly what you need in a longer term tripod.

If you want to spend more money and go with something probably longer term, I like this Vangaurd especially for occasional video. You can extend the center column and tilt it 90 degrees and swing it to do sweeping faux-slider shots. It's also much heavier, taller and sturdier. You'll also need a ballhead for it, this one is pretty impeccable. But I've read the cheaper ones aren't so bad either. This one used to be on amazon, but I can't find it right now.

But all in all, I'd go with the Dolica. Use it and figure out what it can't do that you wish it could, then pick your more costly tripod based on that.

This is one of my favorite tripods for day-to-day use, and it is the cheapest one I own: Ravelli APGL5 65"

It's attached to my camera back pack which is also a great daily use bag. Both are great presents!

But if you need a little more robustness in your tripod, I own the SLIK PRO 700DX Professional which is way more sturdy for heavier equipment and wind.

u/Javbw · 3 pointsr/photography

$140 - a SLIK 700DX w/ 3 way pan head at amazon. the thing is sturdy, full metal head Titanium legs, and the quick release is the best around. it is big, a bit heavy, but it is fucking awesome. I shoot with a D300/ 70-200 f.28 and it sits firmly and solidly.

It is a the best choice on the cheap.

It's like you came onto this sub determined to show off how confident you are about your own self worth, dressing yourself as a Queen, but denying yourself of the simple truth that you just turned thirty and your eggs are shrivelling up and no one in your life to fertilize you or take your picture. Go ahead and invest in your future. https://www.amazon.com/UBeesize-Portable-Adjustable-Universal-Compatible/dp/B06Y2VP3C7?ref_=Oct_CABSellerC_499306_1&pf_rd_p=0bd12d88-99e4-5021-8ebd-4a0a6d7b4d05&pf_rd_s=mobile-hybrid-8&pf_rd_t=30901&pf_rd_i=499306&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=8DWJ83Y9TPV7751W0MFV&pf_rd_r=8DWJ83Y9TPV7751W0MFV&pf_rd_p=0bd12d88-99e4-5021-8ebd-4a0a6d7b4d05

I love making videos of stuff on my phone but I either have to hold it in my shaky hand, film vertically (hell no), or not film at all.

u/FunnyBunny1313 · 2 pointsr/DSLR

Yeah, the amazon kits, for the most part, are just junk, and the stuff you do really want is bad quality. It's substantially better to get stuff as you get more experience.

For a camera, I definitely think that you are good with a t6i or t7i. I agree with the other poster to make sure that you get an "i" because they have the swivel screen that makes life so much easier. After a quick check, you could get this referbed t6i for about $500 which is not bad. Don't worry about it coming with a kit lens, sometimes those lenses can be useful, and for the most part, since it is an "amateur" camera, they are hard to find body only. So you should be good there.

I'm not entirely sure what the "tutorial" mode is, but really do read up on the exposure triangle. It's not super difficult (there are TONS of great graphics that help explain it), and it will make your photos/videos SO much better because you will be in control, and more aware of the capabilities and limitations of your camera than if you shoot in a mode that's not manual.

Also a few quick notes about filming with DSLRs that you aren't going to see if you just look at photography sources. One, try your darnest to always shoot ISO 100 when filming. Bumping the ISO in pictures is fine because the grain is either not recognizable or is easy to remove in photos, but it is SUPER noticeable and hard to remove in video. This is because the grain changes every frame, effectively animating it. The other thing is that if you shoot higher than 60 fps, you might end up wanting to add motion blur or something because the video might look a little odd. On the contrary, for photos you'll probably want to shoot more like 200 so that handshake doesn't introduce motion blur.

The other thing that is SUPER IMPORTANT for video and just like "nice to have" for photos is a good memory card that has a high write speed. This is the one that I personally use. If the memory card doesn't have a high write speed, then your camera will just stop recording because the write speed of the memory card can't keep up with the data coming from the camera.

Also, side note, there are tons of articles that will say that canons can't shoot more than 12 minutes of video at a time because it exceeds the 4gb file size (which it can't go past due to stupid copyright laws. I don't get it either). This isn't entirely true. All the canons that I have dealt with (everything from a t3i to 70D) record fine past the 12 minute mark, just when they get done recording it will split it into 4gb files. Only one canon have I ever seen ALWAYS shut done at the 12 minute mark no matter what, so I suspect it was just broken. However, even with my own trusted camera that I have never had problems recording more than 12 minutes has recently stopped at about 30mins (my guess had to do write speeds), so just always be aware.

As far as lighting kits go, this one is pretty good for a beginer. Most people do a basic 3 point lighting which is probably fine enough for what you want to do. So with that in mind, and since you want to do green screen, you might want to get 2 of those kits. The key to doing green screen is to have a really well- and evenly- lit screen. TBH you really don't need to get a green screen kit unless you just want to. All it really is, is just a large piece of fabric anchored in such a way so that there are no wrinkles. Of course, the kits are nicer, but you may want to see if you can DIY that part.

As for a tripod, this one is probably fine for what you want to do. Just keep in mind that if you continue to do more in video/photography you will probably need to get a better one later on. I personally have one like this that I use like as a back-up, so they aren't a complete waste of money.

Hopefully this helps! If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

u/Streetiebird · 2 pointsr/Beginning_Photography

Cheap and light would be a basic aluminum kit which is not very sturdy but only costs $24.

Expensive and light would be carbon fiber which is extremely sturdy, like this Manfrotto for $350.

Cheap and affordable while still being sturdy would require a better aluminum tripod like this Vanguard Alta tripod kit with head for under $200.

Hope this helps!

Hi all, I'm looking for suggestions for a good stable tripod for my camera. When I was starting out, I just picked up an Amazon Basics tripod that was able to do "well enough" as a newbie with a Sky-Watcher star adventurer mount, my Nikon body and kit lens. However, since then I've picked up some faster glass that's also a bit heavier, and it's become abundantly clear that a better tripod is called for.

All of my current gear weights just under 10 lbs, but if there's a good recommendation that can support in the 15 - 20 lb range so I have some room for growth/margin, I think that would be perfect for me.

Would anything from Manfrotto be a good choice? Randomly searching on Amazon has led me to: https://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-190XPRO-Aluminum-4-Section-MT190XPRO4/dp/B00G36G9Q4

Get one of these bad boys and do like a "check in" with classic physique quarter turns and mandatory poses. (Front double bicep, side chest, back double bicep, ab and thigh) it will be fun practice and show off your physique in a way we can just, as well as a way that you'll be able to compare to doing the same poses in the future.

Tripod: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BQ1D4C/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This gets recommended a lot and I've been very happy with it. Some people even prefer the mechanism to Manfrottos. Anything less expensive is likely going to be quite unreliable and unsteady. Cheap tripods do have their uses, but I'd strongly recommend something like this.

For lenses, you want to keep it simple. There are basically three to consider:

  • Fast prime for low light

  • Wide/normal zoom

  • Tele zoom

If you don't think you need the length of a tele zoom, you can easily get away with a 'super' zoom that goes up to the ~150mm range, or even just ~100mm. Just make sure you cover the wide end because that's probably going to get a lot of use.

It's probably worthwhile throwing in a 35mm fast prime as well. If you're going to be doing stuff indoors, the f/2.8 of a nice zoom is still going to feel quite slow.
u/dotdapple · 2 pointsr/videography

Am a bit confused, hopefully you can explain: how does this tripod sell for $250 on this website while it retails for almost $600 on Amazon?

It seems fishy to me.

u/Pchiit · 2 pointsr/photography
u/balanced_view · 2 pointsr/pics

Yeah, understandable. I've got a tiny Joby tripod that folds flat so you can leave it screwed onto your camera, might be worth a look. Quite limited due to size but works in a pinch and very easy to carry all the time.

I use a phone tripod mount similar to the one below. You could put it on a table and work around it. I had an old microphone stand with a boom arm and put a flexible mic gooseneck on the boom and zip tied the little tripod onto it so it hangs down instead it sitting in front of me.

u/HVPhoto · 2 pointsr/photography

I'd suggest looking for a tripod head rather than a specific tripod. That way if you decide to get a DSLR or mirrorless later on, you could still use the general tripod with a different head.

Tripod head: https://www.amazon.com/Cell-Phone-Tripod-Adapter-Smartphone/dp/B00OS9E6AO

I'd suggest this tripod or something similar, just because you can remove and adjust the center column. There are cheaper ones out there as well, just read some reviews and look around.

u/vic06 · 2 pointsr/osmopocket

Oops, I realized I did not fully answer your question.

The mounts that hold the camera to the phone have a 1/4-20 hole below. I haven't seen any with gopro flanges. You'll have to use an adapter.

Would this one work? You may already have the parts to build it yourself. You could also build one around a dual gopro mount or a plate like the one included inthis kit.

There's also this one.

This other one has lots of 1/4-20 threads where you could screw on a gopro adapter.

u/SECONDBRAVESTTOASTER · 2 pointsr/billiards

>I do plan on hooking up a camera near my pool table sometime soonish but I'm also lazy.

I hear ya. I'm probably going to buy something like this for my phone, set it up semi-decently, and call it a day.

u/_Elrond_Hubbard_ · 2 pointsr/snowboarding

if you're just hiking a park feature or some other hit, you can use a small phone tripod like this. It should fit in a large jacket pocket so its easy to carry. Just set it up on the ground pointing at you.

u/Spokebender · 2 pointsr/canon

Stretch your budget to this and have something sturdy that will last a long time.

u/Pottersmash · 1 pointr/nexus4

awesome, let me know how it goes. Do you have a tripod too? I'm a fan of the small ones that attach to anything, picked up this one recently. works great with no case on, I can test with a tpu case if you are interested.

u/Imlulse · 1 pointr/M43

Definitely carries over IMO, you can stick even a mid sized body with a 100-300 on a travel tripod that would buckle over with a DSLR and anything approaching an equivalent FL FF tele (tho the 3rd party collar still helps with the 100-300).

I have a Sirui T-005X that I bring with me when I travel, usually stuffed in my duffel bag with my clothes. I recently bought a Peak Sling that has carry straps for hanging it (my previous sling bag didn't and I never really use anything bigger) so I'll probably start carrying it more at my travel destination...

The head on it is pretty respectable for the price and it's one of the smallest/lightest I could find, plus the leg angles auto lock and go down to near-90 and the center column is removable so it works great for down low shots (my sister's MeFoto lacks some of this). My most used tripod is probably a table top tho...

I've actually bought, given away, or tried a few mini tabletop tripods (Manfrotto Pixi, Benro Pocket Pod, etc.), tho I haven't tried the priciest stuff from the likes of RRS or Novoflex. My current favorite is the Cullmann Magnesit Copter.

The little head on it beats the heck out of most table top tripods and the top plate can be exchanged (swapped mine out for a Sunwayfoto lever QR ARCA plate, tho I had a smaller Kirk knob plate on it for a while). It's real solid but folds into a more compact tube shape than others which end up with a bulkier diameter.

If you wanna go ultra minimalist, the Joby Micro 250 and/or 800 can literally be stuck and forgotten on the bottom of your camera (these are not Gorillapod). I have the 250 on the bottom of my GM1 or GX850 more often than not, always ready for use. I love that little thing, it has a surprising degree of adjustment...

Seems like it might be cheaper to buy some of the Micros in a phone stand combo these days, I actually bought the 250 with the Grip Tight stand and ended up using the latter for a DIY car mount for my phone.

Finally, I have a larger/sturdier set of cheap Desmond CF legs at home, since I went with a bit of an unknown brand for the legs I splurged a bit on a Sirui K-20X head... It really does blow the rest of my stuff away as far as ease of adjustment. I like the combo and I'm happy I got it for doing tests locally, at home stuff, astro, etc. but it's my least used.

IBIS is great and all but there's quite a few things you still can't do without a tripod, M4/3 gear still allows you to get away with a flimsier one tho.

P.S. Linked to B&H on some solely because they tend to have specs and dimensions laid out much better than Amazon, my purchases were probably split between both.

What do you guys think of this tripod?

Manfrotto MT190XPRO4 4 Section Aluminum Tripod Legs
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G36G9Q4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2LYX7FKX6AP16

I have only ever owned carbon fiber legs in the past (sold them), but this model seems to be really good. They seem more appealing than the 055's due to size and weight.

Also, how about this ballhead?

Manfrotto 496RC2
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002N5NRSC/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I used to own a Markins Q3 Email ($289) and absolutely loved it! Looking for a decent budget ballhead for now, and this one seems really popular.

At most, the tripod would hold maybe a DX Nikon with 70-200 VR. This setup seems like overkill for that light weight.

Any input is appreciated!

I don't use this for DJ sets but I've been using this at my desk job since February and I quite like it. Not quite sure if it'll do exactly what you want it to and it doesn't have a clamp but maybe it'll get you heading in the right direction...

Another option might be to pick up a camera tripod. They make a lot now that are quite cheap and might be better for what you're looking for that a simple stand. I bought this one some time back but I would NOT recommend it. It worked ok for awhile but eventually it basically stopped holding my phone up. Just sharing the link to give you an idea of what I'm referring to...

I love your triforces! Great choice of shape to complement your subject.

And I feel you re: not having enough hands! Flexible work lights can be a good alternative to a handheld flashlight. Flexible tripods are more versatile; you can screw or tape a lot of things onto them, if you have lights you already use. If you're using light bulbs, clamp work lights are also an option.

I use this cheap mini tripod to film my lifts. Another lady at my gym uses a kettlebell to prop her phone up, which seems to work out well for her.

u/Yuri_Butso · 1 pointr/Standup

Since you already have your audio sorted...I'd recommend this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Action-Cameras/Sony-Action-Cam-HDR-AS100V-Definition-underwater/B00HNT5NHQ

It's cheap. Easy to use. Takes good enough low light HD video. Is rugged, so won't break if someone knocks it over or drops it or spills beer on it.

Also, adding a small tripod will make for better video and makes it less likely to end up in someones pocket.

u/sobayspearo · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

I picked this up a couple months ago, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0777RMD3S/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_bYymDbYGQY6GR I really like it. I paid 300 for it from amazon, not sure why the price is so high now. Of the two you were considering I’d go with the one with the smaller folded length. I travelled for three months with a full size manfrotto 055xprob and the folded length of the tripod was too long, and i ended up leaving on days or excursions where I really should have brought it, but because of its size it was a drag to carry all day.

What tripod do I get? I have an a6000.

I'm hoping to spend around $50. I've looked around on this sub, and I've seen many people recommend MeFoto tripods, but they're quite expensive.

Something like this seems great, but due to it's really low price, I don't think it would be as sturdy as I'd hope. I was looking at a few other models and was wondering if these are good options?(Correct me if I'm wrong, but basically any tripod will fit my camera):

  1. Camera Tripod - Monopod Stand for Travel Video Canon Nikon DSLR Camera with Bag

  2. Albott 70" Travel Portable DSLR Camera Tripod Monopod Flexible Head for Canon Nikon with Carry Bag

  3. InnerTeck Tripod - 70 Inches Professional Camera Tripod Monopod with Carry Bag for SLR DSLR Canon Nikon Sony DV Video - Travel Portable Tripod

  4. ZOMEI Q111 55" Flexible Camera Tripod 4s Stand with 1/4 Mount 3-Way PanHead for DSLR EOS Canon Nikon Sony Samsung(Red)

My main use for this tripod is to shoot B-Roll, so something sturdy and something that pans smoothly is ideal.

What camera do you have?

I've got an Olympus mirrorless and bought the Sirui T-024x tripod a few months ago. Small, light, sturdy enough and seems well-built. Can only say good things so far. I halved the size and weight of my previous (Giottos) tripod.

Amazon has the SBH-300 for $99 and the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT Legs for $149. so $248 for both

I think the legs are Aluminum Alloy, not carbon fiber.

I am still deciding between those legs and the Manfrotto 055XPROB legs, In the end I will probably go vanguard simply because of pricing and availability in Australia.

But i think i am set on the ball head... the SBH-300 has a few really shining reviews.

I have also used this ballhead for exposures of several hours for night photography and still saw no creep. For $100, you will not find any ballhead that can compete with this piece of awesome." - improvephotography.com

EDIT: alienshard's suggestion looks better than mine.

I've got a Manfrotto 190XPROB (retail $135) and it does everything I want it to and it's very flexible with the center column thing that pops out and mounts sideways. As far as the head, with your gear you would probably do just fine with a smallish ball head like the 496RC2 (retail $70)

This combo comes to around 5lbs, and is about 26.5" long. You can get it down to 4lbs and 23.5" with a 4 section carbon fiber model, but it's about $150 more expensive than the aluminum one.

Of course the BEST way for you to figure out what you want would be to go into a store and handle the different types of tripods and heads (ball, joystick, geared, etc).

I use my phone. I have a real crappy tripod and bought a larger adapter to fit my nexus 6. I use my pebble watch (sad face) and an app called PblCamera to take pictures and videos.

Cheap and effective! All my photos are geotagged as well!

Just get a phone stand. A lot of people use them for portable filming at competitions. It's an adjustable phone tripod: http://www.amazon.com/Octopus-Portable-adjustable-Cellphone-Bag-Red/dp/B007NFI656/ref=pd_rhf_sc_p_img_7

And at home, I just stuck an adjustable car window phone holder to my wall!

Also, this one works like a head-mount for go pro, but for phones: http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Mount-Smartphone-Operable-Device/dp/B00J6KO9O8/ref=pd_rhf_sc_p_img_8

better than this Neewer cabon tripod?

https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Lightweight-Portable-Monopod-Capacity/dp/B00NSEKEMO

it has a load cap. 18 kgs while the Neewer one has 12 kgs. its mostly all metal not like the Neewer one. but its priced a bit more

Galaxy S4 with an Octopus phone stand on a plyo box. Works for me.

If you can afford to add a couple hundred bucks to that price tag, this Feisol will shave off about two and a half pounds. It's an awesome tripod at that price point. I sort of wish I would have just ponied up the extra two hundred, and got this. Even though weight wasn't a major concern, at least I would have had one just in case I ever need to carry it far.
