and at 30$, usually it's more effective to just buy one off amazon. I get that this is DIY, but I bought a 7200mah solar charing battery for 35$

Reusable snack bags for packing lunches, a cool stainless steel bento box for lunches (they're a little pricier, but groovy looking), reusable shopping bags that go with his interests, and so on.

I have a solar charger I use for backpacking that works pretty well. It's this one: http://www.amazon.com/Poweradd-Apollo-7200mAh-Charger-Portable/dp/B00DLUYSPO

I keep one of these in my kit. I just plop it down in the sun and let it sit. I spent a good part of last summer at NTC as an OC and never ran out of power, I just zip tied it to my truck, and left my phone plugged in a majority of the time.

I also have a ram mount aqua box to protect my phone while it is charging, and I use this on my motorcycle while camping/travelling

I recently picked up this one on Amazon:

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DLUYSPO/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Works great for me, it's 7200mAh and solar charging was kind of a bonus at that price ($29.99).

Yes. I have one of those and it works perfectly. I also suggest getting a solar charger similar to this as well.

u/crankypants15 · 2 pointsr/collapse

No. Not much of the US population lives in areas of the US that are consistently sunny, or windy, to use solar or wind power. Some areas can use both, but the expense is way too high right now to use both. If I got solar and wind systems for free would I use them? Of course! I think they are neat! I simply cannot afford them, nor can I afford to put money out on cheaper systems which will break in 5 years.

My little solar charger to recharge my phone takes 7 days to recharge itself in a Michigan winter. That is not useful in the winter. It takes about 8 hours in the summer. That's a huge difference of energy coming from the sun. And I can't afford any bigger PV panels.

I'd LOVE to have that chip that converts waste heat to electricity directly but it seems they can't get it off the ground. It's a lab curiosity only.

Know that the sun can only charge the reserve battery half way. To fully charge the solar charger, you need to plug it in.

I bought this one. But I guess it's discontinued now. It worked well enough for me. I put it on a window sill more often than I put it in direct sunlight and it still charged.

This USB solar charger is currently on sale for $30 on Amazon.

Should get you through the weekend, no problems.

u/btrain7198 · 1 pointr/backpacking

Found this on Amazon.com. Fairly cheap and does the job; negative customer reviews have complained about battery life, but if you read the top review it clearly states that it should be fully charged before any use. Also stated in the directions that came with the device.

This one can charge my s4 about 2 to 3 times before a recharge is needed! plus its on sale right now for $20

Here's what I'm bringing. The solar panel seems to work fairly well.

What are you going to do if you go camping in the woods, or get stuck on a mountian, or if there's a weeklong blackout at your destination. You buy one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DLUYSPO/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and never worry about finding an outlet again.

u/MicFury · 1 pointr/TomorrowWorld

Get one or two of these and be sure to charge it in advance, leave it in the sun, and leave your phones in APM when you know you're not going to be using data. You'll make it through the whole fest no prob.

Here's a link of the solar charger:http://www.amazon.com/Poweradd-Apollo-Portable-External-Smartphones/dp/B00DLUYSPO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1412619156&sr=8-3&keywords=poweradd

Is there a way I can test if it is charging? The indicators blink but there hasn't been a change in the battery test (25%/light)

Just got mine yesterday. Huge capacity, should work great on the farm with all the direct sunlight.

u/wolfcry0 · 1 pointr/videography

A gopro is a good choice since they are very durable and waterproof if kept in the plastic shell

Option 1: Bring a bunch of batteries (annoying and probably expensive)

Option 2: Gopros charge over USB, bring a small solar panel USB charger to keep it topped off, something like this one looks decent and the internal battery alone would charge a gopro many times over even without the solar panel

Or if you want a really beefy panel that can keep the gopro plus a few phones charged have a look at this one

Ahem. I'm sure there's a more rugged model available for outdoor usage though.

Incase you're not super familiar with battery terminology - AA batteries have between 2000 and 3000 mAH's. Depends on what type of battery and what application it's used in. Your typical Alkaline or Lithium batteries run about 3 am hours (1000 milliamps = 1 amp), however Alkalines have a high internal resistance so if you try to use any high power uses, like a digital camera, the resistance converts a lot of the potential energy into heat, effectively wasting it. Using alkalines in a digital camera you can expect to get maybe 200 mah's out of it, if you're lucky.

Rechargeable nicad's will run about 2 amp hours. So 4, AA's will net you about 8000 mah's. My smart phone will last a good 12 hours of e-reading on a single charge and it's battery holds about 1.5 amp hours.

If I were to use that charger, I would want a USB AA charger to go with it to power my headlamp too and/or any other devices I might want.

The charger I linked has an internal battery pack that holds 7.2 amp hours, so that alone would run my smart phone for about 60 straight hours on a single charge.

The current generation of rechargeable batteries (eneloops), can be reused around 2000 times as well, with a low self discharge. Guaranteed to hold 70% of their charge after a year, 50-60% after 3 years iirc.

A dedicated e-reader will be a lot more efficient at battery usage though. This one can last up to 2 months on a single charge. It's just a simple black and white reader though.

Borrow Lenses is a great company.

I rented a 50mm f1.2L for and a 24-105L a while back for an event, great customer service.

However, make sure you don't get garbage speed SD cards and make sure you rent more than enough. Double what you think you will use.

Use a calculator on the internet to calculate how many hours you want to record and then double that.

A battery Bac-Pac or two is pretty much required, get however many you can afford.

Get one of these to charge them and you're set.
