I just realized I've never had the real stuff either. My parents always called the brown syrup "maple syrup" and karo syrup "corn syrup", but the brown syrup was always Mrs.Buttersworth. Even the legendary Cracker Barrel serves the fake stuff apparently. Will this do?

u/allison_redford · 15 pointsr/JoeRogan

It really depends on the family.

It's the most popular in Quebec, where it's mostly made, and there are whole festivals and activities around it. We eat tire d'erable (Pulled maple syrup) which is syrup dropped onto snow, where it chills and becomes hard and taffy-like. Then you eat it off a stick. Traditional Québécois snack.

It's really only an important thing in Ontario and Quebec, and even then it's just a breakfast condiment that you use on the rare occasion you have pancakes or waffles.

Some families use a tonne, some never use it at all. Tourist shops always sell it, because people visiting Canada think it's some huge thing here. It's just... a sauce. For sweet breakfast food.

The best maple syrup comes in a can. This brand is the usual:

But like alcohol, you can get artisan maple syrup.

Mais c'est trop cher, or it's fucking expensive

The first rule to remember: Muscles are made in the gym, but revealed in the kitchen.

Let's assume you have exercise covered. What about diet? That is where a lot of people struggle. They go on a diet instead of making a change to their diet. That seems subtle, but it is an important hair to split.

If you haven't seen it, /r/keto is very popular right now as a way to get lean without necessarily getting mean. You aren't going to starve yourself, go on a juice cleanse, or only have unpleasant meals ahead for the foreseeable future. This is where you reboot your diet looking to get rid of empty sugar and loads of unneeded carbs.

Start by taking an inventory of what you eat for the day. You aren't going to be focused on the calories. Those will come later. For now, we only want to look at serving size, sugar, and total net carbs. You can look on the back of your favorite snacks to get an idea of it. Serving size is always important because some will try to be sketchy by placing 1/3oz or 1/3 container on the package. Unrealistically small portion sizes don't help us.

If you're like most people, you likely consume between 40 and 100+ carbs for every snack. In some cases, people are consuming hundreds of carbs per meal every day. That can be cut by 95% or more without struggling to find something to eat. It is even easier if you cook at home.

For breakfast, a low carb biscuit or low carb muffin could go with eggs, bacon, or other proteins. With sugar free syrup or jam/jelly, that is an on the go low carb breakfast that most won't mind.

For lunch, a low carb sandwich (low calorie bread is usually low carb!) is easy by checking your local grocery. Breads that advertise low calorie cut the sugar used in the recipe among other changes to reduce the carbs. You could cut 20-25g per slice down to 7g or lower.

For dinner, BBQ with sugar free sauces, have seafood with reduced sugar ketchup/cocktail sauce, or whatever you can dream up.

For dessert, sugar free chocolate syrup on top of no sugar added ice cream, whipped topping, strawberries, or even cheesecake made with low carb pie crust. By using real rare sugars instead of chemical sweeteners, you get better products that taste like their traditional counterparts. Allulose and Erythritol are a good place to start.

At this point, we will assume you have worked to cut your sugar intake down from hundreds of carbs per day to less than 20 - 40. After a few weeks of this, off the shelf processed savory foods with added sugar will taste overly sweet. That is how you know you're on the right track.

Once on keto (or very, very low carb), your body will be burning fat calories day by day. /r/fitness will have more on this idea, but it goes something like this:

Calculate your total daily energy expenditure, reduce your calories by a comfortable amount while maintaining strict watch on carbs (as few as possible!), and calculate the daily loss. If you're down 300 per day, you'll lose about 1 pound per week. That is some very solid progress that you can maintain over time.

If you have any questions, we're here to help. Otherwise, good luck OP. You can do it. reddit is here to help.

I got a free sample size bottle of All-u-lose Maple syrup with my last order of Allulose.

It was shockingly good.

I just tried this syrup last night and I was pretty satisfied. 1 Net Carb per tablespoon.

u/VeggieChick_ · 4 pointsr/veganrecipes

Hi! This recipe is found on my blog at https://veggiechick.com/olive-tapenade/

Olive Tapenade

  • 1 (10-ounce) jar pitted green olives, drained
  • 1 (10-ounce) jar pitted kalamata olives, drained
  • 1/2 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes (I prefer to use dried,. If using sun-dried tomatoes from can soaked in olive oil, drain oil first and rinse with water)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup*, optional
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast, optional

    INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add all ingredients to a food processor. Process until blended. You might have to stop once and stir with a large spoon and blend again. Serve.
  2. Store in an airtight container. Lasts for 2-3 days in the fridge. Make 2 cups or 8 (1/4 cup servings).

    NOTES

  • Zest the lemon before squeezing for juice. I like to use this zester.
  • Adding a tiny bit (just 1 teaspoon or less) of maple syrup balances the sour taste from the olives and lemon juice. If you prefer it more sour, you can leave the maple syrup out. Or add it in later if needed, after taste testing.
  • A food processor is the best way to make this tapenade. I’ve tried a blender and it gets stuck and won’t spin as easily as a food processor. It could be possible, but it’s going to require more effort.
  • Feel free to experiment with different types of olives. If you have a olive bar at your nearby supermarket, you can get creative. Just be sure to pit the olives before adding to the food processor!

This morning I mixed into the batter some smashed frozen raspberries and pecans. So good! Since I don't deal well with sugar I use Cary's sugar free maple syrup. Love that stuff but really the ingredients are a bit too fake for some people's taste. It doesn't cause any digestive issues whatsoever for me. Regular maple syrup is another more natural option.

u/bunnylover726 · 3 pointsr/1200isfineIGUESSugh

I forgot to take a picture because I immediately ate them, but I had pancakes and syrup this morning for <400 calories. Regular pancakes that my husband enjoyed too- no protein powder, fancy flours, etc.

Here is the recipe. It also includes instructions for making pancake mix to save for later. I cut the recipe in half and got 6 pancakes that were a few inches in diameter. My serving of 3 pancakes was 362 calories.

To keep the calories in check, you have to use a quick spray of PAM cooking spray and either a cast iron pan (preferred) or a non-stick pan. My pancakes didn't get stuck. If you have a laser thermometer, you want a 375 degree F pan. Use a 1/4 cup measuring cup (~60 mL) to scoop your batter.

For my toppings, no butter (sorry!) I use Maple grove brand sugar free syrup. (ETA- it's 15 calories for a 1/4 cup.) Kroger and Meijer have it and so does Amazon. Fat free redi wip with sugar free smuckers jelly would also keep your count under 400 calories for breakfast. If you have confectioner's swerve, you could also dust that over them.

Hopefully someone finds this helpful!

u/HermesLurkin · 3 pointsr/veganketo

For snacks, I like these broccoli “chips”. For cooking ingredients that I can’t find in my local stores, I just ordered this sugar-free Nutella to add to my chia pudding, and this keto maple syrup to experiment with some mug cakes.

My boyfriend went through similar struggles with keto vs sweet tooth. Two things helped: keto crepes, and keto french toast. I've this posted before, but think it's worth putting here because it helped us significantly:

This Specific Faux Maple Syrup -- It takes like Mrs. Butterworths. No, it does not taste like the fancy Canadian-tapped stuff, but hot damn if it isn't guilt free and great. Don't get the Vanilla flavored one, it's gross.

This Monkfruit Sweetener -- They sell this at Whole Foods, but where I am it's cheaper on Amazon. This sweetener doesn't have the aftertaste that erythritol sweeteners had and has less of that strange, "cool" mouthfeel. It works well for us in small amounts and the substitute for sugar is 1:1.

This Crepe Recipe -- I add a splash of vanilla to the batter in the blender. I find it helps smooth and thin it out to get a real crepe-like consistency in the pan. Make sure you do the circular wrist movement thing with the pan to spread the batter out all thinlike. These work well for sweet or savory dishes, but also are AWESOME stacked on top of eachother with layers of mascarpone/creamcheese/no-sugar-whipped-cream to make a "crepe cake."

This Specific ThinSlim Bread -- The "honey" flavor is better than the "plain" flavor, in that it tastes more like a sweeter normal bread, while the plain one has a little more cardboard-taste in it. I use this to make french toast (make the batter thinner than you would otherwise, soak the bread longer than you would otherwise, do not toast the bread for best results.) I also use it to make grilled cheeses, which go great with tomato soup (I love this recipe) and pickles. Do not buy this bread on Amazon, buy it from ThinSlim. The cost on Amazon is much, much higher and the bread does not come as fresh.

u/Iskral · 2 pointsr/AskWomen

Jeez, I must be looking at the real primo stuff, since the thing I'm looking at goes for CDN$25, and as far as I can tell it can basically get as expensive as you want it.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/ketorecipes

I use Joseph's Sugar Free Maple Syrup (http://www.amazon.com/Josephs-Sugar-Maple-Flavor-Syrup/dp/B0000DJDJZ).

Go light on this stuff, or you're going to be spend the entirety of your day in the bathroom.

u/xrelaht · 2 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

I tried to find your Amazon site and got redirected to the UK site. Is it the same? If so, try this. There's also this place.

I'd trade you maple syrup for cheese if you'd prefer to go that route.

Lakanto Maple Flavored Sugar-Free Syrup, 1 Net Carb (Maple Syrup, 13 oz) 384ml https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G4I8WCE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_uXaMDbKXEJS85

It's not as thick as regular syrup but it's pretty tasty!

u/MAB_Love · 2 pointsr/keto

I really enjoy Cary's Sugar Free Syrup. It's available at most stores I've seen. The Walden Farms one is really good too and slightly less calories/carbs, but a little pricier.

u/oncidium1 · 2 pointsr/keto

Also found a commercial one that probably doesn't crystallize (I've been meaning to look into this too for keto pancakes) https://www.amazon.com/Lakanto-Maple-Flavored-Sugar-Free-Syrup/dp/B01G4I8WCE/ref=sr_1_9_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1520527252&sr=8-9&keywords=maple%2Bextract&th=1

Has vegetable glycerine and fiber. Maybe that prevents the crystallization?

Filling:
Whipped coconut cream and
Dark Chocolate Sauce

  • 1 tbsp. (5g) unsweetened, dark cacao powder

  • 2 tbsp. sugar free maple syrup (I used Lakanto )

If you asked a few months ago I would have suggested Dorset at the Bryant Park Holiday Shops. I don't have an NYC answer now, but if you're willing to use Amazon there are several great syrups that you could have in a couple of days, like this or this (both Vermont) or this (Quebec).

u/fantasticforceps · 2 pointsr/keto

They don't have unflavored, and they use monk fruit instead of erythritol, but how about ChocZero's vanilla syrup? I've tried their maple syrups and enjoyed them so far.

u/Rayofsunshine2 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Could we have two that equal $20-30? My family is low on food I am a single mother of three who has also taken in my oldest sons best friend, his wife & their son. This and this would be very helpful, add on item Thank you

Oh look literally the first result on amazon for maple syrup

I consulted a lawyer, and he confirmed that Amazon was neither my kitchen, nor a farmers market.

u/Drunkard_DoE · 2 pointsr/ketorecipes

Use this stuff.

u/jmor88 · 2 pointsr/ketorecipes

Do yourself a favor and check out this syrup, it has no sugar alcohol, and is thick just like real maple syrup too. It tastes great.

You need to get him a bottle of syrup like this one and glue the big toy screw from something like this to it.

Cut the plastic screw in half, and glue one half to each side of the bottle so it looks like it's going through it.

u/loonypapa · 2 pointsr/keto

This noatmeal recipe is pretty good. Add some of this for flavor, and it's pretty much oatmeal.

Also, this cereal is as close to cereal as you're going to get on keto.

This maple syrup is basically real maple syrup.

This is probably the best pancake recipe you're going to find, but it won't be exactly like regular pancakes.

u/MootchieFox · 2 pointsr/ketorecipes

Ooo I'm gonna have to see how this turns out. Try this "maple syrup", I love it!

u/sallysaunderses · 2 pointsr/keto

I don't agree with sorbitol.
If you are expecting "real" syrup there probably aren't any but this works for me when I need it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01G4I8WCE

For some reason you now have to go down to the reviews to see the back of the bottle

And what you have is also 1 net carb.

u/philosophical_lens · 2 pointsr/ketochow

Awesome -- I have to try this! :)

Any recommendations for a sugar free syrup? I've heard good things about this allulose sweetened Know Foods Syrup, but I'm not sure if allulose has any adverse affects?

u/cw30755 · 2 pointsr/keto

If it's this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Maple-Grove-Farms-Syrup-Sugar/dp/B002OXXA5S

Then it looks like it uses Sucralose for sweetening, and some reviewers mentioned it contained NO maltitol, so it should be good for a keto lifestyle. On Amazon it says it has 6g carbs, but 5 of those are from sugar alcohols, so you wouldn't count those 5.

u/squidthesid · 1 pointr/ketorecipes

The Walden Farms Sugar-Free Syrup is quite good. I picked one up for ~3.50 at my local Central Market. It's not terribly thick and sticky like regular syrup, but it tastes really good for a sugar free syrup.

u/thegoods21 · 1 pointr/lazyketo

I thought this one was pretty good: Maple Syrup All-u-Lose

u/Aerys1 · 1 pointr/Wishlist

Maple syrup is always a win cause it leads to lots of pancakes!

u/silly-hats-only · 1 pointr/ketorecipes

looks good, must try. here is a link to the syrup.

Edit: just noticed this is a different brand, but highest rated one on amazon.

u/ichabodsc · 1 pointr/ketorecipes

Sugarfree Mrs. Buttersworth's maple syrup is quite good.

Contains sorbitol, so it's still caloric, but the glicemic index is quite low so you don't count it toward you total carb count.

Cacao nibs are already low carb, so they should work well. I have trouble finding chocolate much higher than 60%.

u/earthiverse · 1 pointr/JETProgramme

Think about the following questions:

  1. Do you need it right away?
  2. Have you already bought it?

If you don't need it right away, and you haven't already bought it, take a look at https://amazon.co.jp (Amazon Japan) before you arrive. Even things like Canadian maple syrup are probably cheaper than you'd think. You don't even need a credit card to buy things on the Japanese Amazon. As soon as you get your bank account (first week for most JETs), you can order off Amazon and pay at the ATM.

Also, shipping from https://amazon.com (Amazon America) is pretty affordable (but you need a credit card to do so). For example, I wanted a few board games (Sushi Go, Scrabble, ...) and picture books (We're all Wonders, Triangle, ...). While I could have bought them on the Japanese Amazon, it was about 50% cheaper to get them shipped from America. If you don't need something right away, it's always good to check.
u/eastkent · 1 pointr/AskUK

I've ordered some of this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002NSG0R4/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item and I'm expecting great things from it.

u/HoneyCrumbs · 1 pointr/ketorecipes

There is this sugar free maple syrup stuff that my boyfriend found and it is SO good. I am more of a pure maple syrup person and it sort of tastes closer to Mrs. Butterworths, but goddamn better than nothing! Its this stuff- https://www.amazon.com/Josephs-Sugar-Free-Maple-Syrup/dp/B0000DJDJZ

My other suggestion would be make whipped cream with a bit of maple extract or vanilla, or maybe some cream cheese, or blackberries!

u/needathneed · 1 pointr/ketorecipes
u/im_not_the_sun · 1 pointr/loseit

This is a near 0 calorie syrup. I've tried some of their other products and they are decent.

u/eXwNightmare · 1 pointr/shittykickstarters

this is the same bottle, but the price is a lot higher, fairly sure I was remembering the price wrong(or I got it on sale, but I kinda doubt they would have it for 60% off). Still an amazing price for pure maple syrup.

u/Nolite310 · 1 pointr/firstworldproblems

Southern Arizona. I've seen products just like this in stores, for about the same price.

I guess Im too far from the Great White North to get the "cheep cans."

u/gladudontknowme · -3 pointsr/food
