I did put the smallest dab of oil on the ball bearing to allow for easier movement.

I also worry about the rift controller...both about discomfort and if the magnet will eventually fall off. I found that the contour on the bottom of the controller did not allow enough of the adhesive to cling. This was the way that both felt the most natural

EDIT: OK Guys I am sorry but my original design just won't work. As someone else pointed out, back and left together cause controllers to detach. The only way to do this right is putting it on the bottom which really does not work well due to the angle.

However...I cheated. Unfortunately I am almost certain very few of you can do what I've done, but I used a spare controller holder I got from a gun stock adapter and well, you can see how it works below:

https://i.imgur.com/48juYWQ.gifv

FINAL EDIT: Alright ya shits. The above video is where I ended things and it works GREAT. The hardest part is going to be finding controller mounts like mine. I got mine from an Etsy store that has unfortunately shut down. Below is a parts list:

The actual mount

Some Rift controller mounts I found online (the grooved bottoms may be an issue...may need to be cut down)

Something similar I found on Thingiverse

Hope this helps! Signing off and headin' into space!

It's a magnet phone mount. Like this one.

Having done this, I'll give my 2cents:

  • The LG G-Tab is a capable, cheap device, that has (if you get the right model) both 4G and GPS. You'll NEED both in order to Uber. (or only GPS if you're going to tether it via wifi hotspot to your other phone/dataplan)

  • You'll NEED to keep your phone, because you'll have to text and call people. The tablet won't have a phone plan, so it won't be able to do that. You MIGHT be able to get by using google voice, but most people report they have issues with it (for example, I can't use gVoice for Lyft, because the 2-factor-auth texts don't ever show up.)

  • Providers is going to be up to you. I've found the cheapest way to go here is T-mobile, prepaid, data-only. Costs me like $29/month and I get 6GB of data. Technically it's unlimited, but they throttle it down to 3G speeds after you hit the 6GB cap. I never go over 2GB a month.

  • Mount: NiteIze Steelie. If your tablet is exceptionally heavy, it might be best to get 2 of those and have it use 2 mount points.

I used to have this setup; one phone and one tablet. I ended up switching to 2 phones only because the tablet started to get a little wonky and I didn't want to deal with it anymore. It's nice, and having a "huge gps" is pretty awesome.

I use SJCAM SJ5000X Elite. They're action cams not dash cams per se but have a dashcam auto-on feature and can record in 4k with good low light visibility. Good value, had mine for about 2.5 years trouble free. I fix it to the windscreen using a "Steelie" (or clone) adhesive/magnetic phone mount + magnet side glued flash hotshoe/tripod adapter (I cut the thread shorter) to screw into the camera mount. Powered by USB cable routed to the cigarette lighter. Easily removeable and can be easily turned to face the action for example if you're parked and something happens to the side of the vehicle. I think GPS and such is pointless in a dashcam, I also switch the microphone off because I swear a lot at other drivers! We only really need video evidence and really mostly to protect against malicious false claims when there usually isn't any other independent witness. (edit: They also have gyro stabilisation and can record at 2k)

I love my NiteIze Steelie mount. I use it multiple times a day. It is fast, low profile and holds up to my spirited driving. I dismantled my Qi charger to get the phone as close as possible.

It turns out the magnet on the Steelie is so strong, it will interfere with the induction charging.

FYI: I did a test without the case or magnet. I placed 5 Millimeters of paper between the phone and charger and the wireless charging still worked fine.

Some guy posted this phone mount that I affixed to a spare chair I had. Works awesome with NMS. When it's flying time I just lock in and go.

I like the tempered glass and nite ize, a great way to mount your phone in the car. Cant say enough about it. Watch the price, Ive seen it for less.

u/Shadowfalx · 2 pointsr/GalaxyNote9

As long as the magnet isn't towards the bottom (covering the wireless coils) it should be fine.

Magnets cause the S-Pen to not be accurate, though if it's just a piece of metal it won't change anything IRT the S-Pen unless docked.

I always liked these (Nite Ize Original Steelie Dash Mount Kit - Magnetic Car Dash Mount for Smartphones) but the magnet causes the S-Pen to lose accuracy when around the magnet.

u/AIDSinyourbutt · 2 pointsr/Axon7

Niteize Steelie 100% recommended.

I use the dash mount in my truck and I use the vent clip in my car. It works with my Spigen case and it also has a protective pad in case you don't want have a case on your phone.

Basically you stick a magnet to your phone (the magnet doesn't come with the vent clip but it does come with the dash mount) and you can stick it to anything that magnets can stick to.

Edit: actually under the dash mount, if you select color there's an option to get vent clip + magnet together.

u/jtbis · 2 pointsr/mercedes

I’m a big fan of Steelie. You can stick it anywhere and there’s no fiddling to get the phone into it.

u/mr_mooses · 2 pointsr/MINI

I like how thas has the tightening knob of the top. I had one that was below for my r56 and i hit it every time i shifted into 1,3,5.. And forget about having the charging cable plugged in, that was a mess..

I use a magnetic ball mount, on my r56 and r53 and I love it. Instead of putting a metal plate on the back of your phone case and having a flat mount, this puts a round magnetic ring on the back of your phone and has a metal ball mount in the car. I love it, but i'ts not for everyone. Since the magnet goes on the phone though (and no, i haven't had any issues with magnets on the phone) I can stick it to the hood above my stove when cooking, on on the fridge when charging, or under the bonnet when listening to music and wrenching etc.

I have the mount in the car to the right of the center speedo hump in the r53, that way i can use the cupholder to manage the cables running behind the center stack columns.

In the r56 i have it mounted right above the ignition button on the dash. The mount uses a 3m sticky thing instead of suction so you don't have to worry about the dash texture screwing anything up.

Most importantly though it's one handed, no squeezing to open a clip or let the phone go. So, it's quick to put in and out.

This has worked quite well for me over the last year. I like having the magnet on the phone. I can stick it to a server cabinet at work, to a metal leg on the table next to my TV room chair, etc. The magnet is amazingly powerful.

For ease of use I have yet to find anything better than this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BAQKRHY?cache=a37717589af592cddf562178e45f1779&pi=SY200_QL40&qid=1410186980&sr=8-1#ref=mp_s_a_1_1

It does require putting a magnet in the back of your phone, but I've found its super useful in many other situations as well.

u/jsamhead · 1 pointr/flashlight

I'm considering getting one of these to act as the magnetic tailcap: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BAQKRHY/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1518044138&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=nite+ize+steelie&dpPl=1&dpID=41b6w0cMr6L&ref=plSrch

I've got one for my phone and I already have the mounts everywhere, so I could use the light on my phone mounts to have adjustable light mounts everywhere.

Have had a white XL since launch. It's in a Spigen case so I can use this while Ubering.

The cloth earpiece is dirty. No scratches on the screen or the back. I don't use a screen protector.

Try looking up Steelie. It's a small magnetic ball car mount. Works great.

I’m a huge fan of the steelie magnet. It’s great in the truck and the magnet on the back of my phone comes in handy all the time.

Got this when I got the XV. I wanted something to mount in that open area behind the shifter and I figured with the USB built in it would be good. ... It's okay, the cigarette lighter port is really shallow so there isn't enough support to hold the mount securely as intended. I had to make a foam wedge to support the base. Usable but still keeping an eye out for something that'll do what I want.

I'd previously used https://www.amazon.com/Nite-Ize-Original-Steelie-Mount/dp/B00BAQKRHY and really liked it but couldn't find a mounting spot that I was okay with. :/

Magnetic phone mounts:

Steelie

NoChoice

Mount one steal ball directly above the steering wheel for night navigation. Mount another just to the left of the radio for daytime navigation, phone use, and charging. Magnet mounts on the back of the phone/s, and easily pop on and off. Because the E dashboard is so low, mounting it above the steering wheel does not obstruct your view of the road to the right.

Pro's:

  • Easy on and off mounting of the phone/s.

  • Easy tilting and adjustment to desired viewing angle.

  • Mounting points make give Android phones with the correct apps multiple purposes... think navigation, altitude, speed, direction and road conditions.

  • Mount points do not interfere with view of the street.

    Con's:

  • The steel balls look kinda funky and people sometimes ask what the're for.

  • Because the magnet is on the back of the phone, you have to be careful not to let it near any hotel magnetic key cards, or other mag strip cards.

  • Charging requires plugging a cable over top of the shifter into the AUX power.

  • Charging the phone over the steering wheel looks uncool because the wire runs over the dashboard. Not a problem for short trips where you home charge your phone.

    My use:

I have keep an old android phone without cell service around for offline navigation (Google Maps or buy Sygic for Android). Use google maps and download (using wifi) the cities you will visit. Sygic is good for intercity travel. Google maps is good for offline city navigation (after downloading the city), or online navigation for both.

My regular phone sits next to my radio for quick call pickup, or online navigation. I'm also kinda tall, so it's hard to see the top of the speedometer under the E's steering wheel, so I keep a backup speedometer app on my old android to tell me how fast I'm traveling.

EDIT: Corrected link for "NoChoice" magnetic ball mount.

I have the Nite Ize Steelie, and I can't do anything but heap praise on it. It looks clean, works incredibly well, and as a slightly unintended bonus, you can stick your phone to steel things, I.E. shelves, refrigerators, etc.

u/ReconWaffles · 1 pointr/BMW

I would try a steelie.

There's a magnetic base that is attached to your phone, and it mates with a steel ball that you can put pretty much anywhere. When not in use, it's just a steel ball.

There are a few different versions. Here's an amazon link if you're interested:

https://www.amazon.com/Nite-Ize-Steelie-Cellphones-Magnetic/dp/B00BAQKRHY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466900881&sr=8-1&keywords=steelie+car+mount

There are other mounts that are similar that don't have such a large magnetic base, but I think steelie is the original though.

u/eoncire · 1 pointr/EDC

It is a mount for your car. The part on the phone is a spherical concave shaped magnet and the part that sticks to the dashboard (or wherever) is a steel sphere. You can rotate your phone in any direction and pivot it any way, plus it's tiny so you don't have a big bulky cradle.
