He should buy it, and have it shipped to his work. Then when he's home, always have it on. Maybe put some black marker over the LED to make it more inconspicuous. Take it to the bathroom to turn it on / off as necessary.

Keep the recordings on a computer she doesn't have access to. Go to Best Buy, and buy a crappy laptop for $400. Keep it at work, and never bring it home. Put the recordings there every day.

Calling the police might work. Probably not. Last I heard, they were trained to always take the man in for DV calls. No matter what.

Calling a DV shelter probably won't help. They often have similar biases to the police.

Other "shelters" in Ottawa are largely homeless shelters. Not really suitable for him.

He should know that he did nothing to deserve this. And that it is very hard for an abuser to stop.. They enjoy the abuse. It's their life, and they don't know anything else.

His main protection is to record the heck out of everything. That will be his only protection when she calls the police and claims he's abusing her. (Not "if" she calls, but when). It might not help immediately when he's sitting in jail. But it will help when he shows up in front of a judge, and she's exposed as an abuser.

It might help to call CAS. Having the children witness such abuse is damaging to them, too. BUT the CAS file will be in his wife's name, even if he's the one who calls. Which means that she gets access to everything he said about her. That being said, the CAS people aren't dumb. They've seen this before, and kids talk.

He should open another bank account, and put his work address down for it. Keep the bank card at work, too. Then, start moving money to the account. By taking out cash from his main account, and then depositing cash. Not a lot, just enough to pay some bills if things go south.

Maybe convince her to go to marriage counselling. And then record that, too. It's Canada. You are legally allowed to record any conversation you're a part of.

He could record conversations with the kids, if they know what's happening, and agree it's wrong. But he shouldn't ask specific questions, because that backfires. Instead, ask vague questions. "What do you think of what happened today? Hmm?? And then what??". Let the kid volunteer information. The goal is to have the kids describe how they feel, not to badger them into saying bad things about the mother. If they see this, they will be very clear about what they've seen, and what they think about it.

Uh... if he's a victim of DV, why would he need anger management? He's probably scared and damned near broken. Anger management (if it works) is for abusers, not for victims.

His best bet is to stay calm, and don't get too frustrated or upset. Pretty much anything he says or does will be construed in the most negative possible light... unless he's calm and rational. Which is very hard to do in his situation.

There is a difference between a tablet (like an iPad or Surface, etc) and a drawing tablet. Cintiqs are really the pro level hardware from the company Wacom. I'd look into Wacom's other options. Bamboos are the cheapest and many people love them for hobby level work, and a step above them in both price and quality are the Intuos products. I've had my large Intuos4 for years, it has held up really well and was a great investment, I absolutely love it.

I use GoodNotes5 to take and organize notes! You can look up Youtube videos of walk-through tutorials of the app. It's really easy to export them and save them to Google Drive. There's also a laptop app coming out I'm pretty sure - I have the beta version for my Macbook. I have a lot of examples in my post history for the notes I take on my iPad.

Edit: If two screens is really a big point for you, I can't see how any other tablet will have the $350 iPad set-up beat. In terms of note taking, the iPad is amazing. It's just not a good stand-alone device for engineers! Links to the set-up I'm talking about - iPad and Apple Pencil.

The best alternative in my opinion is the Fujitsu Life book Stylus t 5000. It was recommended by someone here at r/Surface a few weeks ago. Since you didn’t say what kind of tablet this is for, I can only guess, but first search brings up this. It’s for Intuit’s, not bamboo. $26.

It has nothing to do with the the Surface Pro itself, at least for me. I bought the PAC-DOT S Pen and have been experiencing no pen inaccuracy issues unlike with my Surface Pen (which has been a horror thus far).

My complaints about it:

1. I either accidentally press the side button or have to make an effort to find the side button when I actually want to press it. It's flush with the barrel, which makes it difficult with the way I hold the pen.
   
   
2. I'm not a fan of the black finish. It's almost like sandpaper. I might just return it for the carbon one.
   
   I also have the Fujitsu T5000 pen, which is almost ideal for me. Having two side buttons is amazing. I do find that it's more sensitive to angle drift than the Bamboo Feel or even the SP pen, though.
   
   I wish there were a two side button rocker switch version of the Bamboo Feel pen. That would be perfect.

Regarding the keyboard case, I’ve used them in and off over the years. They add good utility if you type a lot but also add bulk. In the case of the iPad you have they also need to be charged (not often but they do) and paired via Bluetooth. It’s up to you. If you’re going to type a lot - take a lotta notes and/or write papers then it could be useful.

As an alternative to a keyboard “case” you could get a regular case/folio and just get a Bluetooth keyboard for occasional use.

It seems to be the most popular choice at the moment, and works perfectly fine.

That's a weirdly worded question. "What are the advantages of this device, if we pretend these two advantages don't exist?"

I'm not even saying that the Pen is indisputably better than the Pencil, because I truthfully think they better suit separate needs; the Pencil seems better at actual drawing/painting but little else, and the Pen is better for overall productivity and note-taking but lacks some of the painting precision that the Pencil has.

But here are some of the Pen's advantages.

• Battery. You don't have to worry about recharging it and dealing with the absurd charging method Apple has employed. When your Pen runs out of battery in a year or so, you just replace the AAAA battery and get on with your day. And you don't have to deal with the cap going missing, which many people have complained about with the Pencil.
  
  
• Replaceable tips. Different artists like a different feel to their drawing utensil, and the Surface can offer that.
  
  
• Magnetic connection. The Pencil may conveniently roll onto a side that displays its logo prominently, but it doesn't have a convenient storage option like the Pen does. It's a little detail, but something that's goes a long way after hundreds of times that you pull it out of the bag with the Pen ready and waiting as opposed to having to reach for the Pencil separately.
  
  
• OneNote/Cortana integration. You said to ignore the eraser, which we will, but said nothing about the button on the eraser, which enables near-instantaneous access to note-taking features and voice-search. The former is especially helpful in a school/work environment - get to writing what you need immediately without having to hunt for the appropriate app - much like the Camera shortcut on the iPhone.
  
  
• Better usability outside of sketching. Watch this video of a guy sketching a shoe with an iPad Pro and count how many times he tries to tap a button or drag an item on the screen with the Pencil and resorts to using his finger instead (also note how many times he tries to erase with it...). Simple selections are annoyingly difficult to accomplish and slow down your productivity when you're just trying to quickly change your brush stroke. I haven't seen any video of the Pen in use that demonstrates a similar frustration.
  
  These are just the ones I can think of at the moment. Again, if we ignore the eraser and the side button. Frankly, I expect that Apple will add some of these features to the Pencil in a generation or two, just as Microsoft will add tilt recognition and better precision to the Pen.

If you really want to keep drawing, I would recommend using your phone until your setup is working again. I've been doing it for a bit and it's the next best thing. It works pretty well and it's portable

I got this to play The World Ends With You on Switch in handheld mode (which exclusively uses touchscreen controls) and I had absolutely no problems with it. It's relatively cheap and has a lot of positive reviews; I've also personally had a good experience with it so far.

Those are indeed Surface Pen tips for the new Surface Pen. What about them seems wrong to you?

When you pull the tip out of your pen (with your fingers, or tweezers), you'll see the new Surface pen's nib is the same as the HB tip in the set you linked. There's another set that Microsoft sells that I can't seem to find on Amazon.co.uk but can find on Amazon.com that sells a removal tool that can help remove the nib if you can't pull it loose with your fingers.

Its odd that you should mention it but "right clicks like crazy" is exactly how I would describe trying to use the "Pro Pen 2" on an Intuos4. That particular pen is not compatible with the tablet, unfortunately. Its not a driver problem; the hardware itself is just incompatible. Does that look like your pen?

If that doesn't look like your pen, might it be an "Intuos Pro Pen" or the "Intuos 4 Grip Pen"? The Grip pen is definitely compatible (it should be what came in the box with the tablet), and the Pro Pen might be compatible (I've only used it for like 5 seconds with my Intuos4, but it doesn't immediately freak out).

I have been looking at the wacom bamboo stylus suggested, but this stylus has had my interest so far. I like the idea of an extra button on the side and it has an eraser, too. I'll probably order it tomorrow if not tonight.

Here's an example of what you could do with SAI, a Wacom drawing tablet, and 5-10 minutes. If you have the money, you could get a basic Wacom Bamboo Splash Pen Tablet. I would definitely recommend one especially over a mouse.

I've been doing a lot of research on this recently; after scouring the interweb for reviews and feedback, it looks like the Fujitsu T5000 is the best around for the SP1/SP2.

The Surface Pro and Pro 2 use a Wacom pen that uses induction. It requires no power. If it doesn't work it's either the Wacom tablet functionality of the Pro itself is broken, or your Pen is broken inside.

The only way to test either is with a replacement pen or a different Surface Pro (1/2) (replacement pens can be bought but are not cheap https://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-Digitizer-replacement-Stylus-T5000/dp/B00791UTH2 )

I have a pretty good workflow involving a Livescribe Echo Pen and gridlined notebooks. The pen can record meetings/seminars/etc and sync the audio up to the PDF that it creates. And, then you have the paper as a backup. I then organize all the PDFs in Evernote. Works well for me.

(note: you need to obtain permission to record if you're in a place with an expectation of privacy in many states)

I've always just called them 'tablets' or 'drawing tablets'. If you search Amazon you can get a pretty nice one for less than $100- I've seen a few as low as $30. I've been using the Wacom Bamboo Splash Pen Tablet CTL471 for a while now and I have no complaints.

As far as the computer programs go, I would check some of these out.

I'd be worried about the plastic scratching my tablet. If you have Amazon Prime, you can get a replacement pack in 2 days.

To upload you just need to plug the sensor into your computer and access the files. You can edit them in the Wacom software or in Photoshop/Illustrator. It holds multiple sketches so you don't need to upload all the time. Here it is on Amazon.

I use the Figitsu Lifebook pen T5000 http://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-Digitizer-replacement-Stylus-T5000/dp/B00791UTH2 with my Pro 1 (Since it's wacom, it would work with a pro 2 as well.) The plus side is it's cheaper than the Feel stylus, it uses standard Wacom nibs (not the smaller feel ones), has two buttons and an eraser.

I also use a matte screen protector. Really helps add resistance to the pen, especially using a felt pen-nib.

I use Paint Tool SAI primarily to draw. I love it.

You have to by special notebooks but they aren't expensive.
As you are taking notes, it records what you are writing as well as any audio and when you open the program on your pc you can watch the words appear on the paper synced with the audio. This has been such a life saver in college.

Best Buy/Amazon/Staples/Walmart has the 7th gen iPad on sale - $250 for 32GB or $329 for 128GB.

I'd spend the extra money for the 128GB, unless you have a strict budget or do everything in the cloud. Also, unless you can find the 6th gen for cheaper, I'd go for the 7th gen because it has an extra 1GB of RAM vs the previous gen. That's useful for having more apps open without reloading.

FYI - If you plan to use Microsoft Office apps for iPad, they're only free for iPads below 10.1". The 6th gen is 9.7", so it qualifies for free Office apps. The new 7th gen iPad is 10.2", so you have to pay for those apps. The free versions only let you read documents, not edit them.

If you're going to college though, you should qualify for free Office 365 with your EDU email, so that's probably not a big deal for you.

It looks like Amazon currently has the Apple Pencil 1 on sale for $79.

If you want to get the best deals and are not in a rush, you should check out the Slickdeals forum for deals on things. Also, Best Buy sometimes has Open Box deals on products that can be worth the savings.

Replacement pens are available to purchace on amazon/other retailers, you will probably want something such as this, though other pens may also work too.

Compressed meaning audio that has been compressed, like all audio on a phone would be. Unless you were using an application that was specifically capturing and recording audio that was not compressed. Packet meaning data waiting to be sent back to where ever the next time a network connection is established. Please don't be condescending to me, it makes me want to tell you to go fuck yourself.

Energy to keep the phone on? Not what I said, but regardless: I have a droid eris I use as an MP3 player. The battery is currently around 15%. The uptime is 529 hours, it's been 17 days 19 hours 36 minutes 33 seconds since unplugged from the charger, and has 4 hours and 43 minutes of awake time.

I personally use the Intuos 4 and I love it. I find the size of the tablet to be fine to work with and the size allows me to throw it in my bag along with my laptop.

I picked up this Monoprice tablet yesterday after owning this Wacom tablet. I'm already convinced that the Monoprice tablet is all around better than the other in price, drawing area, and it also has programmable buttons that I use to replace keyboard shortcuts in photoshop. For something a little different, there are a ton of very good notetaking apps on Ubuntu that (I think) are substantially better than what's available on Android. Xournal, BasKet, and Zim are a few that I've really come to like.

I took most of my class notes this past semester using Xournal on my TF300 (running xubuntu) with a cheap Wacom tablet, which worked surprisingly well for taking handwritten notes.

For typed notes, BasKet is great and lets you insert quite a few different file types in addition to normal text (images, screenshots, etc). Zim is similar, but uses wiki syntax. I actually came to prefer it for the awesome plugins that let you insert various things (GraphViz diagrams, calculators, even sheet music).

Android apps like Evernote and Keep are pretty good, but I've always been pretty disappointed in the lack of formatting options and how inefficient they are. They all really felt like they were getting in my way and I'd always end up going back to using pen + paper until I found Xournal.

As for good pens, I never found one that worked, at least using the device's touchscreen. Even with a stylus (most of which are terrible for handwriting things) you'll never come close to beating pen + paper. I've heard hard-tipped active styluses are better but I think you'll still run into issues with the digitizer not having high enough resolution for decent-looking handwritten text. Even then, you'll have problems dragging your palm across the screen.

Eventually I just gave up, got a lightly used Wacom Bamboo tablet, and convinced my tf300 to work with it. I've been using it happily ever since.

Also: You shouldn't be worried that this one is so cheap. It's miles better than what I had when I started (Graphire 2).

Plus: It's going to last for years. For instance: When I got the Graphire 2, Macs were still running on PowerPC. They updated the driver every so often. I'm running Graphire 2 on the latest macbook.

These things are built to last. You're gonna drool over some upgrades long before the one you buy dies. Don't get that anxiety to upgrade to more expensive models. It's not going to make your drawing any better. Trust me. I was there. It's my one mistake.

You can only go wrong by buying non-wacom tablet.

I would give this a try.

Its a Wacom EMR (it goes by the name "feel-it" under the driver name) digitizer. So, look for pens that work w/ that.
The Fujitsu Lifebook pen works very well, as does the wacom bamboo feel pen (though i don't recommend it due to the button being flush w/ the pen and the pen being prohibitively back heavy w/ the cap on.).

Overall I think your art is very good. You have an excellent grasp of anatomy and facial expression. Your biggest flaw is just cleanliness. I'm not certain of whether or not you own a digital stylus, but it will really help. Here [1,2] are two different ones you may want to look at depending on what you're able to get a hold of. I understand that this could be difficult at your age.

Beyond this, practicing your lineart is all that's left. Here is a good guide to help you figure out where to start. Also, try to take the time to make your coloring complete and neat. Other than that, I can't think of any other advice, since you're starting from such solid ground.

I don't know how decent it is compared to other tablets since I've only ever used this one, but I have the Wacom Bamboo tablet and have been using it for years. Also, the Bamboo Feel stylus (model number CS300UW) works as well, but its super hard to find. There is a more expensive 'Carbon' version. Make sure its the right model number, because Wacom's naming conventions can get confusing.

I personally never use the eraser side of the pen. Never really liked that plastic rubbing on screen feel.
Anyways, you're probably going to make things worse if you attempt to repair it yourself since the Pro pen 2 is firmly glued together. You'd need either some strong solvent or a hacksaw to take it apart.
Your best bet is to buy a new pen if you can't live without the eraser.

Get the Pac-Dot S Pen its cheaper than Surface Pen and has none of its issues.

If you eventually decide to dabble in more digital art, I'd recommend getting a Wacom Bamboo tablet. It's pretty inexpensive (as far as tablets go, anyway), and that way you can experiment in Photoshop more. :) What I usually do is scan a drawing in, do the lineart in PS, and then color from there.

I got this for Christmas since a friend who does professional art stuff recommended it to me and it's been pretty great.

I use Paint Tool Sai to sketch/outline/coloring the comics and I do the editing and arrangements in Photoshop. For sketching I use the airbrush tool and for the outlines and coloring I use the pen tool. I also use this thing to draw everything.

A lot of professors will upload their slides, which will help—although I know when I teach, the slides are more of an outline so I’m not just reading them, which means people still have to take notes. You might take a look at something like the [LiveScribe pens](Livescribe 3 smartpen Black Edition (APX-00020) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0195Y00Y2): they record audio and key it to your writing. When you import your notes from the pen later, you can tap a keyword in the notes and hear what the Professor was saying at that moment. There are apps for iPad or Surface that will do the same thing, too. That kind of linked audio and handwriting really helps, so you don’t have to spend time scrubbing through the lecture audio later to find that one point you didn’t write down clearly.

Have you considered something like a LiveScribe pen? Might be a happy medium - you write with a pen, but it saves what you write and it can be uploaded to a computer. It also has an audio recorder, too - and it remembers what was being said while you were writing.

...but I've never used one myself. I linked to the pen on Amazon so you can look at reviews yourself, if you're interested in it. I really want one, but $100 is a little too steep for me.

Hey OP, I'm probably late to the game, but figured I'd share some of my experiences. You can draw on a computer using a mouse - in fact I have known a few graphic artists who swore by the mouse, but they are few and far between. By far the preferred method is by way of graphic tablet.

Wacom is still the reigning king in the tablet world - their Intuos line is what you will usually see in most professional offices. They are a pretty serious investment though, usually starting around $300-400+. When you're getting started, look for a used Intuos or pick up something from their much more affordable Bamboo line.

The biggest hurdle when drawing on computer is disconnecting what your hand is doing and what your eye is seeing. Most traditional artists are used to drawing directly on their media - unless you have a Cintiq or monitor graphic tablet, that will not be the case in your situation.

The next step is learning your software. Like others have mentioned, GIMP is a great starting point because it's free - however if you are thinking about making a living out of graphic design/artistry in an office setting, you will eventually have to learn the Adobe suite. While many people use Photoshop to draw from scratch, their official product for this purpose is Adobe Illustrator. Once you get used to what Illustrator offers, you will see why people separate the two products (vector art is just the start). Ideally though, you will want to learn both Illustrator and Photoshop.

as long as youre not using it like a box cutter it should last a pretty decent time and a pack of 5 nibs is like $7, and the surface is pretty smooth against plastic nibs and gets a fair amount of friction after you wear down the nib a bit, a cover isn't necessary for good drag

the pen (LP-181?) is pretty nice and light, but for some reason the pcb in mine got loose and i bought the pen for the 470 (LP-171) and it works just about as well, even if its slightly heavier and longer

buying used isn't usually a problem, and you can only buy it used anymore anyway

between the options you talked about, i would say its a pretty equal toss-up between them all, the biggest difference for me is just surface material

Ok so I just did some double checking - I had found that pen by selecting "CTH - Bamboo Fun / Pen & Touch / Intuos" from the dropdown, and the pen used to come up (not sure why it doesn't anymore). Also in this post, someone said that all the pens with the prefix LP are compatible with CTH-470 tablet.
