They still exist, I know that much. You can buy plants on Amazon.

You can get them. They are just not produced in volumes that make them a viable crop. Doing so greatly increases the risk of the Panama Disease wiping them out.

Me personally, I would totally flip out if someone got me a miracle berry bush! They produce a berry that makes everything taste sweet! https://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Fruit-Farm-Plant/dp/B00HVTNJMY
I would also flip out if someone were to get me a dragon fruit cactus!: https://www.amazon.com/Tasty-Hainan-Pitaya-Dragon-Cactus/dp/B01L6XXNJO/ref=sr_1_3?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1480624099&sr=1-3&keywords=dragon+fruit

It hasn't fruited yet... i need to do more research on how long it takes. It was planted as a sapling.

Ironically, I grew it only because someone said it was extinct and I found it... just the one.

This is a huge pet peeve for me, because I constantly see those little grow kits in stores, and the options are almost always things that are commonly grown from seed, like tomatoes, basil, peppers, etc, and strawberries! Every store that sells those kits has a strawberry option. Of course people have no idea that growing from seed is not a good option when they see seeds for sale everywhere! I wonder how many people have gotten discouraged and given up on the idea of growing anything because of those stupid kits.

u/Honda_TypeR · 3 pointsr/pics

Does Whole Foods sell these? This is the first I heard of them.

Apparently according to wiki, they have no pineapple cross breed in them at all. They are just a cultivar of strawberries that happen to taste like pineapple.

-----------

Not quite the finished product but I did find a link to buy the plants.

http://www.amazon.com/White-Carolina-Pineberry-Plants-Bareroot-Pineapple/dp/B00HZROPE8

another company selling them here... probably better to get it direct from the plant nursery places, like below.

u/Fuel13 · 3 pointsr/todayilearned

Here you go, there is a link at the bottom to buy. It needs to be planted next to regualr strawberries, and they sell those as well.

Edit: also on Amazon

I’m obsessed and dying to get one. But they’re poisonous to cats so I have to have a high shelf first lol.

Looks great I love it. r/houseplants would love it if you want free karma 😏

u/AutisticDownsTard · 2 pointsr/gardening

Since i made that post i decided to wing it since i got no replies lol. I planted 12 starts, since the research I did told me that it isn’t possible to grow pineberries from seeds. If your seeds don’t work out for you, this is where I ordered mine from. I’ve only had them planted for a couple weeks now but they’re doing pretty well.

I planted mine in 6” wide by 9” tall pots. I got mixed results about how much sunlight they need so i planted them in all different places, some with full sun, some with half sun, and I planted one inside on a windowsill. The one inside didn’t last more than a week, so i would definitely plant them outside unless there’s a place in your house with a lot of sun. I keep the soil moist all the time, and the pots all have a tray to drain into.

Actually the Gros Michel variety still exists in the wild in areas of Thailand, in fact you can buy a whole plant from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Gros-Michel-Banana-Plant-Variety/dp/B0094JDSAC

u/jbisinla · 2 pointsr/history

> I imagine many of those seeds and plants are lost to time though.

You'd be surprised.

You can buy corn seeds, or if you want to be really hardcore, you can grow its ancestor, teosinte, and seeds are readily available.

Modern bananas are all pretty much clones of the Dwarf Cavendish variety, but the previous commercial version, which nearly went extinct back in the '50s, the Gros Michel, can be bought on Amazon., or if you want to be super hardcore, the musa acuminata ssp. errans, which was an ancestor further back, is still grown, but harder to track down seeds for.

Obviously, all sorts of species have been lost over time, but it's always amazing to see what's still out there, like the mammoth squash grown by the Miami Indians of Indiana for 5,000 years or so.

Youtube has all kinds of cool videos if you're into this stuff.

My fiancé Ryan is my favorite person. He's my best friend and a great dad to our daughter. He works so hard to make sure we have everything we need and he's always there for me. He loves me for who I am flaws and all. I feel like sometimes I take him for granted but he's just really awesome. He loves growing stuff and he'd love this and this. :)

Play this song while reading (follow with any other Empire of the Sun song when it ends)

It was a dark and stormy night; the darkness was so consuming, there must have been magic involved. The days had been growing longer and the nights warmer for awhile now, and the time of faeries was nearing. Amsie hadn't been beyond the great old oak glade since the eve of last summer. Could she even be sure the magic had been born yet? She trudged onward through the darkness, the brilliant beam of her headlamp the only thing illuminating the barely-there path through the forest. It was cool tonight, but an indescribable warmth Amsie could only really say was an alive sense of self led her through the deep night.

And then, just ahead, she could see the trees parting. Was she too soon? Was summertime magic alive yet in the forest? As she stepped forward, she was answered nearly immediately as the forest lit up in enchanted moonlight, shimmery silver kissing the forest, now transformed and opening itself into a mystical clearing. "The faeries have been busy already," Amsie thought to herself. Before her, laid out in moonlight, was this year's magic faerie garden. Her eye was drawn immediately to a bush of what she thought were tomatoes, but were too many colors- too beautiful to be real. Regular red tomatoes had their place, but the faeries had somehow infused these ones with the rainbow- would they taste any different? She had to know, but she knew the penalty for taking from the fae. She pocketed her hands and let her eyes do the eating. She tore her eyes from the vivid "tomatoes," if you could call them that, and inspected another strange magical plant.

It looked like a faerie-sized watermelon, but the plant was COVERED in them. A sweet-faced fae flitted nearby, her ice-blue wings glinting in the moonlight, and Amsie called to her. "What are these?" she asked the sprite, who flew over, perching on Amsie's shoulder. "Well, those are cucamelons of course! They were gifted to us by Quetzalcoatl- he loves the colors we grow here in The Garden - as resplendent as he, he says! So he gave us melons that would make us feel large and special too!" With a smile, she whisked off in an azure blur. Amsie was satisfied with the answer, they were like tiny watermelons afterall! "How kind of Quetzalcoatl to share the seed", she thought, looking around the verdant glen.

A hummingbird chirped at her, flying in low circles near her face. He continued to pester her, flying in the direction of a cluster of fae creatures. She sighed and followed the pesky little guy to the gathering. They were pulling some sort of great ferns from the earth, their tops light and bouncy, fluttering with each breath and concerted effort to pull it from the ground. Amsie approached, hoping to get a better look at these funny plants when a faun approached her, several fern-somethings clutched in a bouquet, another hanging from his mouth. He was chewing on the root end and Amsie thought it looked a bit like a carrot- but the colors were all- off. She accepted the carrot bouquet from his outstretched arm, and he bounded off to flirt with the nyads. Indeed it was a carrot, as she turned it over in her hands she could see is careful rings, but it was so dark- as if it had soaked up the night itself. As she admired the "carrot" bunch, another friendly faerie flew over, munching on a smaller chunk of carrot she must have cut for herself. Amsie could see that at its heart, the carrots were golden orange, and so warm. The deep darkness of their exterior was illuminated by the contrasting core. "Thems there are purple dragon carrots, did you know that? Big 'ol nasty dragon purred like a kitten when we fed him some rainbow 'maters last year and enchanted these up for us! Try one!" He winked at her before zooming off to try and pull out more carrots, seeped in not only the magical darkness, but apparently dragon magic. Amsie looked at the carrot and shrugged, it had been offered, so the penalty mustn't apply. It was worth the risk to try this mysterious root. She broke off the long scraggly bit at the end and took one crunchy bite. It was unreal- the sweetness, the deep earthiness, like Mother Earth herself had let her soul seep in as she nurtured their growth.

And then it happened. Amsie flashed her eyes open- when had she even closed them? No longer in the forest in her gear, but in bed in her night shirt- she blinked sand from her eyes. Oh no. For one bite she'd paid a heavy price. She knew it hasn't been a dream. She knew it was real. It had to be. She could just almost taste the sweet darkness, feel the smooth leaves on the cucamelons, feel the moonlight filtering through the diffuse magic in the air. But she knew better than to eat the faerie food. If only she could have and hold just a little bit of that magic, just for a moment hold the memory of summer magic.

I hope you liked my magical story! Let's both experience this magic together, but for real! Rainbow tomatoes, faerie cucamelons, and dragon carrots are all on my list and altogether are still around $5! Let's grow our own summer faerie garden! All 3 of these can be grown in containers on a porch if a magical glade isn't in your reality right now!

Thank you! ♡

I'm not sure those colors scream tropical... Those are more kind of nautical to me? Like I immediately think anchors. But that could just be me! What about loosely this pallete? You can always tone it down if it's way too bright for you!

I would keep the walls white or light gray (like the color you have on the left for walls). I would totally do an accent wall with some sweet ass wallpaper like this, this, or this. I would keep the couch a neutral color this some of these pillows and do a couple of these babies with these pillows. Add some Monstera plants. Add some accents of subtle pinks and oranges around and I think it would look gorgeous!

I ordered a hardy kiwi on amazon, they are a bit smaller than normal kiwi with no fuzz. The cool part is that they survive in much colder weather. Heres the amazon link

They come sexed and this is my first time with them so no idea about pollination yet. I am just amazed at how quickly they grow. You can see it shooting out leaves in just a day, and I read they can grow about 20 feet in a season.

u/SapperSpy · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

For most of my plants, I just buy from Walmart, because it's easier. For kiwi, you may need to order a live plant. If I don't have to mess with seeds, I don't. Okra and corn has really only been the best for me seed wise.

Strawberries started from seed take a few years to grow fruit. I bought ten runners at the grocery store. They all died (my fault, not the fault of the plants), but that was a blessing in disguise because the one that survived STILL hasn't produced a single flower, so.... Anyway, the second batch I got on amazon here. They're doing great.

u/KerryMeHome · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I wet my plants. I would be growing sunflowers, strawberries, and these rainbow flowers plus whatever else I could manage if it wasn't still snowing in Iowa:( I'd really like some means for gifting. Thanks for the contest.

u/redditor1255 · 1 pointr/fatlogic

I haven't bought it, so I can't say.

I will say that online reviews indicate that the fruit works much better than the tablet. Buying the fruit plant isn't very expensive, either.

You can buy the plant here and obviously you should use rush shipping, as it is a living thing.

u/Tired0wl · 1 pointr/gardening

I ordered it off amazon - $38 plus $16 shipping here. The plastic pot it arrived in was a little banged up, but otherwise the plant is healthy! It even had little flower buds all over it. I can't wait for the first fruits :D

Not quite extinct. You can still get Gros Michel bananas but they are VERY hard to find. You can even grow your own "Big Mike" tree at home.

I planted 3 strawberry plants in a planter and I used miracle grow gardening soil as opposed to their potting soil by accident. I currently have them under two LED multicolored desk grow lights which have been working well so far but I'm concerned that these may be the source of the problem. Maybe they are getting too much or too little light? I have them under the lights for 12-13 hours a day. Either that or a deficiency maybe? I'm not certain that it's any bad watering habits because I'll usually water them well until the soil is most and then wait a couple days until it is dry again to water.

The lights are currently off to easily see the plants otherwise they're all covered in purple light

Also these are Hirts Evie Everbearing strawberry plants I purchased from amazon as bare roots - https://www.amazon.com/Hirts-Everbearing-Strawberry-Plants-Bareroot/dp/B000P3K8G8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467058059&sr=8-2&keywords=strawberry

u/cxixer · 0 pointsr/IndoorGarden

I read strawberries like sandy soil, so I got potting soil, mixed with sand, planted. These are under t5 full spectrum bulbs in my basement. I feel like the perlite is causing some mold to grow, is that normal or should I be worried?

Also, some of the leaves on each plant have been dying, starting at the edges (as seen on the left image, then shriveling up and turning brown. I've been trimming them off, but it keeps happening regularly. Every week there's more. Four of the eight plants have died, shriveled up like that completely. The ones that are still alive seem to be doing quite well.

This is what plants they are: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P3K8G8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Any feedback is appreciated! Did I screw up the soil? Too much/little water? Not sure what to do here.

Except it is

It the colloquial term for that specific raspberry, due to it's blue-black color when ripe.

As I said, it's more "purple" than "blue," just like blueberries.

The vibrant blue that's associated with the flavoring comes from food coloring, Red-2 I believe, which wasn't all that safe so they (ICEE brand) changed up the color to a vibrant blue. It stuck.

There are red oranges too, see: blood oranges

Or how about purple carrots?
They're damn near the same color.

Just because you don't really see them all that often (when people buy raspberries, they want traditional raspberries) doesn't mean they're not there.
