I do a lot of surfing and canyoneering; both of which require me to stash my key due to water. I can't lock the key in the car because it won't lock. I've been clipping it to a carabiner on the rear passenger side behind the wheel, but this has downsides (someone seeing me, and I'm always afraid it's still close enough to detect presense and unlock). After burning my hand on the exhaust pipe by not being careful, I decided to find something new.

I found this, but the reviews weren't convincing me of its quality, the drawer looked small, I wasn't sure it would fit the 3rd gen, and it was more than I wanted to spend. I ended up welding this box and pairing it with a combination lock receiver lock. I hope this gives other people ideas if they're in a similar predicament.

You want neither of those, and want a wheel lock.

None of the contractor trailers in town rely on tonguelocks for the reason that they are easily circumvented with bolt cutters.

Edit: Something like this:

If the alley has the parking marked for your company only, I would suggest your manager buy a car boot and make them pay to take it off.

PS - who knew you could buy one of those off amazon...

u/slacklantis · 6 pointsr/oakland

My car was swiped just last week. Second time this year. The club, it does nothing!

Looked into a few other options, including the Disklok & maybe even booting my own car.

Also thought about getting a little mini gps to stash in the car, which could help to track it down.

Pain in the ass. Fuckin' thieves!

u/Ig79 · 6 pointsr/whatisthisthing

It's part of one of these. I can't find a link to that exact model but I used to own one and 100% that's what it is. You're missing the actual key cylinder though.

Hindsight is 20/20 but if anyone else is reading this, I purchased one of these for peace of mind.

This kind of thing already exists, and in my opinion is being done better. The “hitch vault” logo is a giveaway. For the model I’m comparing to, the at least have a cover to help conceal the fact that it’s a safe.

Doesn't help you now but next time get a trailer coupler lock.

Do you have a hitch?

First of, excellent choice of RV and truck.

I love my Andersen Magnetic Jack Blocks. You have the 6 point auto-leveling system from Lippert (Ground Control 3.0 I reckon) so you just attach these jack blocks to the round feet magnetically so you never have to 'center' the blocks when leveling.

LevelMate Pro is another item I have that I love. You can check if your level, side to side before even detaching. It's a must have as I shave a good 5-10 mins each time I setup and I'm always 100% perfectly level.

Purchase a Kingpin Lock for when your RV isn't hooked up to the truck so no one can steal it.

Purchase a regular lock to replace the lock pin on your 5th wheel hitch to prevent people from unhooking your RV when you're stopped. Yes, it's happened.

Consider getting the Furrion observation camera. Your RV is already pre-wired for it so it's crazy easy to install.

Which surge protector did you get? Progressive Industries makes really good units and they're quite popular.

Enjoy!

  1. I said $120 for labor, not twenty. Which would be 6 man-hours at $20 an hour.
  2. Did this amazing TV episode tell us what the boots actually cost? Maybe I missed that information.
  3. I didn't see the TV episode, and there is no fucking way those things should cost $700. $250 may be low, but I'd easily bet that the real price is far closer to $250 than $700.

Here's one on Amazon for only $150. Not quite as hard core, but try telling me a better model would be 5x as expensive.

How does a bolt cutter work on this

u/jackrats · 3 pointsr/whatisthisthing

Possibly part of a locking hitch pin.

A variation of this:

u/bleaurgh · 3 pointsr/camping

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000OC3Q2I/ref=s9_top_hm_b1420t_g263_i6

It's hard to say just how much it weighs, but I used to have an 8' older popup that weighed about 800lbs. I pulled it with a 4 cylinder truck.

u/RotationSurgeon · 3 pointsr/CampingGear

Yeah...clean out everything from it before you go, and leave an itinerary under the driver’s seat.

Side note, if you have a trailer hitch and don’t want to risk losing your keys, there are mini combination safes for leaving your keys with the vehicle that lock into the trailer hitch with a cap to hide the combo lock like this one: HitchSafe HS7000 Key Vault https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I66JEM/ (~$45)

u/Godolin · 3 pointsr/pettyrevenge

Don't even gotta make your own. For under $200, you too can be a massive asshole.

u/NMHacker · 2 pointsr/Albuquerque

Trailer thefts happen all over the damn place. Here is an article of one in Orange, CA. One of the safest cities in the country. Many years ago, I used to deliver products to several cities around the west. I always took precaution s in securing the trailer I was towing. Every trailer I hauled had one of these, as well as one of these. Never had a problem. Point is, take precautions in securing your valuable, no matter where you are.

u/CarbonGod · 2 pointsr/GoRVing

Tow is a Mazda CX-5, max tow limit of 2000lbs, while the trailer is about 950lbs empty. I can easily lift the trailer when loaded to get it on the ball, so tongue weight is around 120lbs. The ball and hitch should be both 1 7/8" but now you are making me paranoid (I don't have trailer or ball with me, it's in storage a few hr away), but I did not feel any play after attached and locked. I did use an anti-rattle pin lock like this...same concept at least.

But that is why I was thinking it was just the leaf springs being open on one end (slipper leaf) to allow compression lengthening. I also did NOT know this when traveling!

Good to know that they DO bounce like monkeys though.

u/Chiotdufromage · 2 pointsr/pettyrevenge

Buy one of these. Charge them a hundred to remove it.

You're merely subletting the space at a premium rate. Notify them that electricity is fifty extra.

EDIT:formatting

u/dyi01 · 2 pointsr/MTB

I have one of these locking hitch pins. It serves a few purposes and works well with my NSR-4 bike rack. It is a locking pin so without the key its doing to hard to steal the rack. The instructions say to torque the pin into the nut @ 90 ft lbs. so unless you have a breaker bar to loosen it you probably aren't getting it. The torquing of the pin also gets rid of unwanted rattling in the hitch.

u/HonorableHam · 2 pointsr/RVLiving

This is about that particular lock, there are better ones out there. This one on Amazon looks like it's built better, though I'm not sure how easy it is to pick.

u/Level9TraumaCenter · 2 pointsr/Locksmith

One security-through-obscurity option if you have a trailer hitch. Also a 4-digit combo, but whatever.

u/squeamish · 2 pointsr/internetparents

I keep one of these on my car with spare cash and keys. It's handy and secure.

u/Don_Rummy586 · 2 pointsr/CampingGear

Or this if you don’t have time to make one.

u/sbtx83 · 1 pointr/Hookit

That's what I thought and everyone else said, but this one works perfectly.

u/nate81 · 1 pointr/bicycling

Do i need something that screws on to keep the bike rack from rattling while inserted into the hitch? The bolt that came with it is a type of anti-rattle bolt that makes it nice and solid, it wont move.

Looking at this..but its a diff brand, i thought maybe this would catch the attention of someone who has bought a similar bike rack and locked it up.

u/DantesDame · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I have a couple of these retractable locks that I keep in my tank bag. I can usually run the cable through an arm and the helmet and lock it all to the bars. In addition, a friend of mine got me an 8' length of cable that they use in public buses to signal a stop. He looped back each end so I can run the cable through ALL of my gear and just lock both looped ends using the helmet lock.

u/AsPerMatt · 1 pointr/whatisthisthing

Could it be a hitch lock pin? Like these

It looks about right. I can't match the maker, or one that is exactly the same shape. But there are lots of others that have that shape, and it looks like it would fulfill the purpose quite well. Though it depends how sturdy it is. That little bulge below the lock part seems to the 'bolt' for the whole thing. That would, I assume, keep someone from stealing a trailer, boat, etc. Hard to tell how strong that material is though.

Kuat NV Base 2.0:

https://www.kuatracks.com/products/hitch/nv-base-2-0/

It's a 2" which works as-is on my wife's SUV. On the little car I have it attached to this 1 1/2" adapter:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ISLA1WA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And to reduce the wobble, this stabilizer:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AM7XVS8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When using it with the 2" receiver, it has a built in stabilizer and needs nothiing extra.

u/irmikexp · 1 pointr/bicycling

I use this for my hitch mounted bike rack. Masterlock receiver lock

u/sbslater · 1 pointr/pics

Or you could to the opposite and put a trailer boot on it. A-hahaha! Watcha gonna do now buddy?

u/ckster · 1 pointr/DIY

If you have a trailer hitch, just get one of these.

They didn't test the Trimax one: http://www.amazon.com/Trimax-UMAX50-Universal-Hardened-couplers/dp/B000F3RYGA It's similar to the Reese, but it's hardened steel rather than aluminum.

  • Purchase a wheel lock like THIS $163.

  • put horrible bumper stickers on their car that promote racism, rape, incest, pedophilia etc.

  • Buy a fish and tuck the fish some where under the hood or under neath the car where it wont fall.

  • Purchase a some rats or mice and get some peanut butter slather the peanut butter underneath the care and hope for the rats make a new home.

  • This is probably going to far but hear me out some times people need to be made an example of ... Loosen his lug nuts, cut his break lines, and carefully fill the care with Nitrous Oxide. This way he will become disoriented lose control of his car and get into a serious auto accident. Then murder his entire family and feed them to him while his favorite band tells him he is a loser and a cry baby.
