For the Makita guys

I do not own one, just figured you guys may want a link.

Looks like they hacked the 18v to 20v adapter, but I don't know if they hard wired into the vacuum or what after that. https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-18v-20v-Adapter-DCA1820/dp/B016K1UD0E/

Not when you can buy brand new (not rebuilt) aftermarket ones with a 1 year warranty for about the same price on amazon.

He said that he spent $17/battery, these are being sold on amazon for $21 shipped, new, with warranty. There is no way he could make money doing it. It's not even worth your time to do this yourself...

This response is pretty great although not exactly addressing the penny hack.

Edit: apparently you can get spacers to utilize smaller batteries in larger configurations. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JHKSLSW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pldnSite=1

Another trick to keep in mind if the batteries are dead is that they sell adapters to use the newer 20v batteries in the older 18v tools like this. They seem to hold a charge better and longer.

u/Jysttic · 6 pointsr/Tools

With 1.3ah batteries?! Your poor batteries. I never use mine with anything smaller than a 4ah. If you are looking to future proof go with Dewalts Flexvolt version :-D but really that is overkill for you. I would probably start with a good 4 or 5ah battery and see how that lasts you. This is a pretty good deal.

To be honest, however, I just swap/recharge them out after each rehearsal/show. With Alkalines as low as $0.25/AA Cell, no reason not to.

But is it frugal?

If we ignore the tool cost, you're only saving $4~ per pack. If we throw in the soldering iron cost it's more expensive until you're rebuilding 3 or more. I don't know about you, but I'd rather just spend a few bucks more to get the ready-made solution and have something I don't have to mess with in order to get working.

This is only frugal if you consider cost above all other things.

u/wully616 · 4 pointsr/Multicopter

As I didn't really know what exactly was in that kit either I held off ordering extras until I knew what I needed, based on that and what /u/Hard_Max said in another thread, I've ordered the following:

Get rechargeable batteries instead. This is a great brand that a lot of gamers use and recommend and that I own as well. They will last longer than the battery packs and it's cheaper and you can use them in other things other than your controller.

Something to consider is their 18V to 20V battery adapter. Let's you buy into the new system and batteries for the lawn mower, but you can continue using your old 18v tools until they die.

https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DCA1820-Dewalt-Battery-Adapter/dp/B016K1UD0E

This will depend on how often you use the tools though. If it's a daily thing the added bulk of the adapter could get annoying quick.

In your situation, I'd definitely look hard at the DCA1820 adapter.

https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DCA1820-Dewalt-Battery-Adapter/dp/B016K1UD0E

Lets you use the new XR Li-ion batteries in your existing XRP tools.

There are also some knock-off clones of the DCA1820 on ebay and amazon for half the price or less, which are getting decent reviews and seem to work OK.

This will allow you to get much better batteries, and then start phasing in new tools as you need them.

u/Jonosurf75 · 2 pointsr/xboxone

I got mine from Amazon. I got this exact package went it was on sale for $17. It goes on sale a few times a year. I'd keep an eye out on slick deals for it, they sell out pretty quickly. I wouldn't buy it for $33, but at $25 or lower sure.

u/DesolationRobot · 2 pointsr/Tools

One thing you have going for you is that they're nicads and older tech with less actual tech built in to the battery. Newer LiIon ones the battery itself is pretty smart and I wouldn't trust 3rd party.

One thing you have going against you is that's an obsolete battery platform, so any money you throw towards it feels wasted.

If it's just the one drill, I'd shop for a new drill. Get something current-gen. Even a current-gen lithium-ion 12v drill will likely be as powerful as your older nicad 18v--and much smaller/cheaper.

If you had a lot of tools that were still useful, you could look in to a battery adapter to let you buy new LiIon batteries that you could eventually use in new tools.

If money is tight, though, I'm sure the 3rd party nicad will work just fine--they're really not that complicated compared to the new smart ones.

> So is there a way I can use either battery pack to power the christmas lights? I guess some sort of transformer that accepts a USB 2.0 input of 5V/1-2.5A and outputs 6V/6A

Can't be done.

Assuming that the 6V/6A input on the lights represents actual power consumption, that's 36 Watts, and your chargers only output 10 to 12.5 Watts.

Whenever you step up Voltage, you also step down Current, and vice versa, so that the total Power (Voltage times Current) remains the same (minus efficiency losses).

5 Volts at 2 - 2.5 Amps might light the LED string, it would be dimmer than normal but the bigger problem is that it could damage the battery pack (depending on how the battery pack handles excess draw).

For some perspective, this $74 20V/5Ah battery would give you a little over 2 hours of run time, after converting down to 6 Volts.

You could paint the cord to match the wall, to make it look less conspicuous, or decorate it with a cable raceway.

If the DC side of your light's power supply is long enough you could make a small hole in the wall behind the painting, and another one directly below it and behind the couch, fish the DC cord of the power supply through it, and plug it in; optionally you could use AV wall plates where the cable passes into and out of the wall. Just don't run any 120 Volt cords through the wall.

Nice looking wall, by the way.

We use these when building aircraft wheels. It can tighten about 100 nuts with this battery. It can also break 170 ft-lbs torque on antisiezed bolts/nuts.... if you don't use extensions (they absorb some impact). I will say that our pneumatic impacts are stronger and preferred when breaking the 170 ft-lbs nuts.

u/TK421isAFK · 1 pointr/electricians

I'm not sure. I think what I used was a retrofit-type battery - the batteries that you started seeing on the market 5 - 7 years ago that were designed to fit in existing 18-volt NiCad tools (center battery). Those seem to be getting somewhat scarce, too. I imagine it's cheaper to build a cell pack with just the cells and no charging circuit, thus having more contacts between the pack and charger.

For what it's worth, Dewalt now sells a lithium pack to NiCad tool adapter, but it seems kinda bulky.

I'll be at Lowes later, and I'll see if I can match up what I used. For some reason, I didn't leave myself a note in the charger. I usually do that, reminding myself what I used and the date I built the device, but I really didn't expect the motor to handle the increased voltage more than a few months. I did notice, however, that the donor charger has only one LED (flashing = charging, steady = charged) and that most newer chargers have several indicators. That could help figure out which charger I butchered.

u/truthdoctor · 1 pointr/ebikes

If they are making bikes that accept tool batteries, I hope there is one that takes the Dewalt Flexvolt 20-120 volt 9ah batteries.

u/pdxdiscgolf · 1 pointr/Tools

Where can I find more info about this? I just got my dad two new 20v XR tools and an adapter so he can use his old 18v tools with the new batteries. His 3 old NiCad batteries are about dead and swapping them out for this would be much better than just recycling them.

He already has a charger for the new kit he bought. I wonder if he could swap out a new charger for something else when he exchanges his batteries?

Edit:
DEWALT DCA2203C 20-Volt MAX Battery Adapter Kit for 18-Volt Tools https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016K1UEPS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_w29ZzbK47KTXH

So is it basically just $20 off this when you swap the old batteries? That's not a ridiculous deal, but it's still better than getting nothing for the old ones.

u/radiobrain · 1 pointr/Tools

in case you didnt know this exists... dewalt makes an adapter that allows you to run their newer cells in old nicad tools.

of course this would be more expensive than creating something yourself.

Just a quick skim on Amazon and the 60v (as shown in the clip)... around 100usd for the 6ah, 200 for the 9ah and for whatever reason the 12ah is going for the same price as well. Just the battery, no charger.

I did get a few 18-20v adapters not too long ago and I'm super impressed what a new battery can do for the older tools. Not the most ergonomic, but def extends the life of the tool.

u/whatdidshedo · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

I am nit sure if this charger does Aa and aaa, but bunch of eneloop batteries (best batteries you can get) and a charger is one of best investments I made, and I got it as my first purchase trough prime now app same day delivery to get $20 off first purchase of $50 bucks, so I got 16 Aa 14 aaa couple of converters and a smart charger for like 30 bucks.these and couple extra packs of batteries

u/RichardBLine · 1 pointr/HomeKit

I've been looking for a way to disable my motion sensor in certain situations as well. The solution I came up with is to use a battery eliminator. Some Homekit motion sensors are battery operated. If you use something like this : https://www.amazon.com/Everlasting-Glow-93976-Convertor-Christmas/dp/B076MZQ42P/ref=pd_bxgy_23_2/143-0164372-5830675?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B076MZQ42P&pd_rd_r=de79e105-3010-11e9-9f4b-9fb10f44f45c&pd_rd_w=gy2ee&pd_rd_wg=I99Qz&pf_rd_p=6725dbd6-9917-451d-beba-16af7874e407&pf_rd_r=TP78SMKT9EBY1Q50Y7JA&psc=1&refRID=TP78SMKT9EBY1Q50Y7JA, then you can plug motion sensor into an smart switch. Then, when you get into bed, you can use a smart button to turn the smart switch off. Also, you can then ask Alexa to turn the switch off/on as well. Various options can be found on this website: https://www.batteryeliminatorstore.com/index.php . You might be able to find AA battery eliminators on Amazon as well.

u/phineas1134 · 1 pointr/batteries

If you really want to leave it on for extended periods, you may want to look into a simple battery eliminator like this. This will allow you to plug in your sign and leave it on for as long as you'd like.

Edit: Looking closer at your picture I noticed that you need a 3 volt battery adapter, instead of the 4.5 volt adapter I initially linked. I had a bit of trouble finding a 3 volt version in AAA but here is one example. Sorry it's a bit pricey, I would think if you searched a bit more you could find a better deal on a 3 volt AAA battery eliminator.

u/icedearth15324 · 1 pointr/xboxone

Amazon has them. You can buy a kit that comes with 8 AA, 4 AAA, and a charger in a nice little case. https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-K-KJ17MC124A-eneloop-Adapters-Individual/dp/B00JHKSLLY/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=eneloop&qid=1572619142&sr=8-5

They have them on sale every now and then.

u/Vyviel · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

Amazed people still use non recharable batteries. My suggestion would be to invest in 8 good quality recharable batteries like Eneloops and just swap them from the charger to controller when required.

I personally bought this package maybe 5 years ago and the batteries are still going strong in my xbox controllers and other devices.

https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-KJ17MCC82A-Eneloop-Advanced-Individual/dp/B00JHKSLSW/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1510351864&sr=8-14&keywords=eneloop+aa

Make sure you get similar batteries if you choose another brand that hold a charge for a long time. The cheaper rechargables go flat very quickly even without use. I think eneloops and similar ones can hold charge for 10 years even if just sitting there.

u/yosoyreddito · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

If you already have 20v kit, Dewalt makes an adapter so you can use 20v batteries in 18v tools. Look around, I know a few months ago most tool supply companies were selling most 18v tools/batteries at a deep discount.

If you're willing to spend more and get new, right now is the time to buy. You can get a brushless 3 speed impact and hammer drill, that comes with a 2.0ah and a 6.0ah flexvolt (their next gen battery system) battery for $380. In addition you get 2 free tools (20v bare tools or 20v batteries).

The best package I would say is the impact + drill, with a free circular saw and 2-3.0ah batteries.

Edit: If you don't have 20v; I just saw this kit, you can get an adapter with 2-2.0a batteries and charger for $105. Probably the best solution and will give you extra 20v batteries if your 18v tools die.

u/markdjr · 1 pointr/boostedboards

This is not a very good solution. You would be better off just buying a 12v battery and inverter, cheaper and lighter. Additionally, the one yu listed uses a SLA battery, which is why it is so heavy. This would be a better solution but still not ideal.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZZNMV1Z?_encoding=UTF8&%2AVersion%2A=1&%2Aentries%2A=0&deviceType=desktop&ref_=de_a_smtd&showDetailTechData=1#technical-data

u/stringentthot · 1 pointr/roomba

You should know about lithium replacement batteries for your Roomba. The electronics are a bit tricker to design, but it seems companies are getting better at it. It looks great in theory too -- the batteries are lighter (more runtime), hold more energy (again, more runtime), and last for more cycles. This one averages 4.5 stars over 71 ratings. I've had one a few months and the battery life is unbelievable.

Also, wifi controllers are the ultimate in Roomba pimpage these days. Check out the RooWifi (available now) and the Thinking Cleaner (currently being Kickstarted).
