That's not actually true. I ordered two tents directly from the factory in China. I made a post about it two years ago.

This tent is nearly identical. (possibly even better since it has a sunroof)

Given the fact that it's two years difference, and whatever the USD to CAD conversion rate was now vs then might be different, I would say they are making about $200 profit on each tent. Even then the profit is only there because they would ship so much at a time, the shipping costs would be less than what I had to pay.

Given the amount of effort I had to put in to go through the whole process, I would say that's MORE than fair.

Now a price like this for a tent? That is very overpriced.

We throw an air mattress in the back of the Cherokee and have a little table and chairs set up in the tent. Got us through a few rough storms with no leakage issues. Relatively easy setup and teardown. The tent can be disconnected and sealed off while you take the jeep out for activities. I’d highly recommend it.

So, I was in the same boat, and after a lot of research, I discovered that most of these Roof Top Tents (RTT) are made in the same factory in china which is why I went with this one to save a some money for about the same quality.

As far as quality goes, I went over every inch of this tent when I first opened it, and besides some metal shavings leftover from the factory, there were no issues besides the mattress being a little thin for a side sleeper like me.

For us, the RTT makes sense since we are going to be going on long road trips (eastern NE to Olympic National Forest in WA being one of them), where, for the majority of the trip, we aren't going to be spending more than one night at each stop. This allows us to set up/tear down in a couple of minutes, whereas with a regular tent or hammock, it takes a bit more time. So the convenience factor plays a pretty large part. And when we do get to our spot, we can just park the truck and hike around from there.

As with most things it comes down to personal preference, and how you go camping (one location vs multiple locations).

I found this one the looks pretty good:

Not a recommendation as I've never used one, but Naiper makes truck and SUV tents. This one looks pretty simple. There are some that roll out into complete tents.

another one made for a truck with a topper

Honda also had a couple OEM tents available for the Element.

It's specifically designed for use in the bed of a truck, got it off of Amazon, here's the link, happy camping brother 🤙🤙: NAPIER Backroadz Full Size Regular Bed Truck Tent, 6-Feet 5-Inch, Green/Beige/Grey https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ASYOTKU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_UC6rfZVqpjD24

Low cost, well reviewed tent. Happened to be $90 off when I purchased.

u/Ebola_Fingers · 3 pointsr/ToyotaTacoma

The tent is a Smittybilt Overlander that is mounted on two KB Voodoo Crossbars.

Although it's probably hard to see in the video, the crossbars have special brackets that allow for you to use them with a tonneau cover.

I bought it off Amazon for our truck. I also recommend the air mattress made for the truck bed. It made a huge difference after 40 miles on the bike that day.

I believe this is the exact one I bought here, I bought through an actual store though, not Amazon. It is a Smittybilt

I recommend putting the link either in the text of your post or do a Submit Link that's a direct connect. It's a pita to pull a link out of the title.

And for those that want the Amazon direct link to the product under discussion (it's an affiliate link via the Slickdeals site): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FSBE7BE/

It’s this one:
Tuff Stuff Ranger Overland Rooftop Tent with Annex Room https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YPYPH0U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LFX7Cb9YWZNHP

I love it.

u/fleaticus · 2 pointsr/nissanfrontier

I've slept in mine with an over sized (as in meant for an 8ft bed) tent and a regular queen size air mattress. This would be the correct size for the tent i used, but any 6ft will work fine.

It's doable, you'll just end up taking the whole bed plus the length of the tailgate.
As far as weather goes the tent will be about the same as any other ground tent. If the weather gets bad, just turn your pickup into the wind.

My buddy has this Smitty Built tent. Not only is it one of the cheaper ones, but it's lightweight and it's pretty comfy too. I've slept in it and it does everything I expect from a tent. https://www.amazon.com/Smittybilt-2783-Folded-Tent/dp/B00KCFKPX0

u/ineeddis · 2 pointsr/carcamping

They're not very cheap, but can make a big difference when sleeping in a car. For this one I paid $350 CAD , but it seems to have gone up a bit.

They make air mattresses specifically for truck beds, this one is $120 and has worked great in my experience 4 times out. You can use a basic tarp to cover the truck bed (Like this ) or you can buy a truck bed tent like this one which is $180. No experience with this one, but the concept is pretty much the same across the board.

u/Scoregasm · 2 pointsr/Coachella

Nice! I fully recommend a truck bed tent and a truck bed air mattress. You increase the amount of free space in your camp spot tenfold.

u/Colonel_Johnson · 1 pointr/TeardropTrailers

I think they sell tents that you can back a SUV into, then its just a matter of incorporating the skirt into the door on the trailer

u/dingosaurus · 1 pointr/rooftoptents

I'm not a huge person, so I'd probably get by more than fine with a 2 person Tepui.

I think the Hybox is probably the best fit for my needs. You stay well within the near normal footprint, which is my primary concern.

I did come across the Raptor OFFGRID Voyager which is a lot smaller investment into hardware while I try out the idea of a rooftop tent. It looks quite easy to set up as a single person.

I think either of these should work with a standard Yakima/Thule bar system with my 2008 Forester. It looks like the standard roof rack load is ~150-175lbs, and both of those fall within that weight range.

Sure the hard top is sexy, but if I don't know if I can rationalize $3000 on a tent.

u/jeseely · 1 pointr/nissanfrontier

If it's a decent quality tent, extreme weather is no issue. You'll just want to let it dry out before folding, or fold it up and air it out ASAP. I mean, people sleep in tents on extreme mountain ascents and traveling across the arctic poles.

For your dog I'd consider a bed tent instead of a over-the-roof tent and make a set of stairs he/she can climb to the tailgate.

I don't own a bed tent, but this one seems to be popular: https://www.amazon.com/Kodiak-Canvas-Truck-Bed-Tent/dp/B01N4W531Q

u/mr_masamune · 1 pointr/overlanding

I have a Tuff Stuff RTT and this ARB awning

My plan is to take both vehicles out when I go camping. I can leave my truck behind and have it act as a "home base" and then derp around/drive to hikes with my Xterra.

u/TornadicThrill · 1 pointr/ToyotaTacoma

It's a Guide Gear tent. They're meant for a 'larger' compact truck but they fit my 5ft bed pretty well. Only weird area is the entrance which sits a tiny bit too long. You can let it overhang the tailgate a little (pictured above) or prop the edge up on the tailgate letting the top lean forward giving a little vestibule.

The seams at the roof aren't watertight and you can see a bit of daylight through them, but it comes with a rain fly that's pretty easy to buckle on that covers all of that. All in all, a great tent for that price and we haven't had any issues with it.

I do exactly what you described. I have a Sportz tent that goes in the back of my truck for campgrounds. I am planning a trip this year to pack my ground tent and camp in the woods.

A double air mattress will fit better in the truck bed but I use a queen. Just has a bit of a radius laying on the wheel humps. Here is a photo from a few years back on my old '04 F150 but I am still using the same tent on my '15 F250 truck now. In fact, I have already used it twice this year.

Where about do you ride?

This is the full size tent. It's meant for a hard top not a soft top because it relies on the door of the hard top to stay open.

https://www.softopper.com/camper-tent

Here is the same tent but softopper makes poles that support the opening since the soft top doesn't have a door like a hard top

It's called Smittybilt Overlander Tent, we got it second hand from someone. It does not come with the roof rack, I bought the rack on Amazon. Its recommended that you dont have it on the stock roof rack that's built on the jeep. Tent and Roof Rack we did have to trim the roof rack down for the tent.

u/LoungeLizard21 · 1 pointr/f150

Thanks! bought it from amazon. It's not a perfect fit, but very close. paired it with an inflatable mattress that has cutouts for the wheel wells.

I use this tent for my truck bed. That way I have a canopy for the day and a tent for night. Privacy for sex is key. Canopy is nice for staying cooler when sleeping but sex trumps all.
