Grab [or make] yourself some 2D glasses. It makes the 3D "wasted", but who cares -- you get to see the film the way you want.

As a technological note, those glasses are just a two "left" or "right" (not sure which) lenses, so both eyes get the same version of the picture. Whether that version is exactly the same as the dedicated 2D one -- I'm not entirely sure.

Stuff like the Sony HMZ-T3W - not really VR, but a stereoscopic head-mounted display nonetheless (although with a microscopic fov; HMDs in those days used microdisplays as the smartphone industry hadn't yet pushed display panels with high enough resolution to small enough form factors to be usable, but microdisplays are, well, micro, so you get a miniature fov, which is one of the things Palmer figured you could fix (and did fix) with phone hardware).

I wasn't part of the pre-Oculus hardcore VR enthusiast group (which you could find on the MTBS3D forums), I only got to the party in 2013, so I'm pretty clueless about what these old-school VR HMDs are. People did try to make VR a thing in the 90s, it was a huge hype-fest that ended disastrously because obviously tech in the 90s wasn't even close to good enough, but there is hardware out there.

Here's a fun little bit of VR history, a post on the MTBS3D forums written by Palmer about the original Oculus Rift in 2012: https://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=140&t=14777 - note the first reply there, too; Cybereality went onto become the lead Community Manager for Oculus (and is mostly active on the official Oculus forums)

But that "more polished" costs a lot of money.

Someone else posted a link to the current state of the art for reference: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-HMZ-T3W-Personal-Screens-Virtual/dp/B00EXDUEEC/

At least it's not that bad :)

Microdisplays used to be the go-to technology for head-mounted displays in the olden days, before the Rift DK1 and its precursors came along. I own an eMagin Z800 3DVisor and a Sony HMZ-T1 (BTW, anybody wants to buy one of these, PM me), and they are both pretty bad. FoV on both is around 40° diagonal.

The issue are the complex optics required to get a large FoV from a tiny screen.

I used to be skeptical of microdisplay HMDs for that reason, but it turns out, optical technology is evolving as well. eMagin demonstrated a prototype HMD using 2k x 2k microdisplays about 18 months ago, with an advertised FoV of 80° x 80°, and I didn't believe it until I tried it myself. While clearly a prototype (no blue! bad head tracking!), the display quality was already very good, and the angular resolution way past what's provided by Vive and Rift.

The trick is that eMagin use a clever way to fold the light path of the required complex optics in on itself to make them small enough to fit into a comfortable HMD. Basically, light is polarized one way, goes straight through a curved half-mirror, bounces of another mirror that rotates polarization by 90°, and then bounces back off the first mirror and straight through the second one for a large degree of angular magnification with little geometric distortion and chromatic aberration. Didn't see that coming. More details are in this patent, dug up by /u/frankenberrylives and reported here by /u/FredzL.

I find this too, I get massive headaches sometimes, but not all the time when I see 3D movies. I bought some of these and it helped alot, since I hate going outside to do things like watch movies alone, I use these when I go to movies with my friends now.

I love how everyone says 'basic use', and then 'browsing' is the first thing out of their mouths. A browser is incredibly complex. Web pages take a ton of power to render, and require a display that approaches 'standard' resolutions to be useful.

Of all the things I'd use a near-eye display for, browsing is literally the last on the list. It's an application where more screen real-estate is always better, and you'll never get enough.

It sounds to me like you're just looking to buy something, and the bottom line is that regular people just don't want to wear a computer around. Especially when it'll be less capable for browsing than a phone, and that's all that most people want to do.

As for suggestions, there are things on the market at varying costs. Here are some links to things of different styles, maybe one of them will be what you're looking for.

  • Glyph headphones These were a big deal when they were first being introduced a few years ago, but they didn't sell well at all. I think people just considered them 'silly'. I just noticed they're under $200 now, and I've considered picking up a pair to try them out.

  • Blade AR These are more recent, and probably more interesting in general. Reviews for these kinds of things are always middling at best, so I don't know how well they really work. Personally, I wouldn't buy them because I'm not sure if I could hack the display for an external computer, and this looks like it's meant to be more like VR glasses than a near-eye display. But, if you want an out of the box experience, maybe look that direction?

  • VISIONHMD These are your pretty standard display glasses. Recent generations of these have just had their asses kicked by cheap VR. Most VR uses a phone display, which are easy to find and really cheap. That means a device like this, using actual near-eye technology is expensive to produce by comparison, and it can't do VR, the one application people think of when they pick up a headset. That said, the prices are dropping on these and the res is pretty good. I could see buying a pair just to remove the displays, personally, but if you just want a small computer you could probably add a pi to the strap and have something usable here.

  • Vuefine This is definitely something more my speed. This is a single eye, reasonably good resolution, basic HDMI interface display. Stripping these down isn't be that hard, and I can hang them off just about anything.

So, depending on what you want, there are definitely options.

u/ArchiMarK · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Is this about the Nvidia 3D Vision? Because you'll need the emitter, glasses and an Nvidia card for it to work.

The rest is pretty straight-forward: just configure 3D vision in the Nvidia control panel and enable it to run when you run an application full screen.

u/raygundan · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

If you ever find yourself in a situation where your friends are all going to a 3D movie and don't want to be "the complaining picky guy," let me introduce you to 2D glasses. Brilliant.

You could also make your own from two pairs of free theater glasses-- just take 'em apart and make one pair with two "left" or two "right" lenses. Now that both eyes get the same image, any 3D content you watch just becomes a normal movie or TV show. HEADACHE AVERTED.

Sincerely, bored nerd who gets migraines.

I'm really leaning towards the idea of giving away diffraction glasses. Do you know what kind you use? And I'm thinking about ordering these and passing them out at Escape from Wonderland. I'm just not sure if they'll be any good. I want to give people something they'll really enjoy!

Edit: Possibly these instead

No, they don't. RealD uses circular polarization. Sunglasses are only linear.

You can by glasses that turn movies back to 2D. For example.

Again, do you want a HUD like Google Glass, or you just want to have something similar to a VR headset?

The glasses you linked are very similar to a VR headset. Once you put them on, you won't be able to see the outside world. With that in mind, here are two suggestions.

u/themangeraaad · 2 pointsr/Minecraft

search amazon for "3d glasses". I bought a pair of the $5 ones (link) and they are pretty decent. I figured if it worked well and I liked it I would rather have a comfy pair than getting some cheap crap.

Now my problem is that while the 3d works bright lights (torches, sometimes clouds, etc) go straight through the lenses and cause 'double vision'

edit: as caramonfire said, I would agree that 'ghosting' is a better term than double vision. But also as was mentioned, it is fun one in a while.

edit2: noticed that airencraken said the red/blue work better than red/cyan. Maybe I should pick up some red/blue ones to test which works better.

I just purchased a w1070 a few weeks ago. I got two pairs of these glasses and they work great, especially considering the cost (~$20).

I picked them up just for occasional use, but I've found that the novelty of 3D movies wears off pretty quickly, and some people don't like them at all. It's still fun to pull out an show guests, though, and works for games that support stereoscopic 3D. Just something to consider before you invest heavily in many pairs of glasses.

u/Tacolad9318 · 2 pointsr/oculus

There are two high resolution screens in the rift that are specifically customized for the device. Along with a microphone, headphones, optics, ergonomic casing, ir-tracking camera, remote, Xbox one controller, and two free games. ALL of which were designed and crafted from the ground up specifically for a virtual reality experience. They aren't off the shelf products that were duct-taped together, everything was implemented carefully for the best product. $600 is more than reasonable it just isn't what they had been hinting at in the past. You can be upset that they were wrong about their original price range but please do not act like this is not a great deal still.

For reference here is the closest thing to virtual reality we would have today if Oculus didn't exist. More expensive and far far worse in comparison.

u/atticdweller · 1 pointr/Minecraft

I used to do this but it got so annoying. I got good 3d glasses but the ghosting was always in the way. In dark places you just can't see anything because the image isn't bright enough.

The feeling when I first tried it was amazing. I loved the 3d view from my sky train. But after that 3d feeling went away, it was just a nuisance. Try it for a while with cheap glasses then if you can still tolerate it, go for a good pair.

These are the glasses I got: http://www.amazon.com/Style-Glasses-Movies-Games-Screens/dp/B002T0D81C/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1322254011&sr=8-15

unscrewed the temples and inverted them so the glasses were pointing up instead of down. Works great except for the lack of "nose-notch".

As for the loss of peripheral vision, I only use these at the gym where it's not a problem.

This is the most fanboy reply yet.

> People want a real competiton, not shady copy-cats (it's a rift clone) that with 10000x smaller budget announce features that bigger companies with much bigger staff cannot (for technologicall reasons).

It's an HMD. How is it a rift clone? I could say the rift is a clone of every single HMD that came before it. I could say that any smart phone is a clone of the iPhone. It's just a form factor, and it really isn't shady. Like what features? You can develop hardware when you're relatively small, mainly because you're only developing one (so hardware cost isn't a huge issue) and it only takes a couple good developers to write algorithms. Adding people simply increases the speed that these things are produced by, not the actual ability to be produced.

> They offer a magicall support for PS3/PS4/X360/XONE and don't say any details. They are misleading people. Are you okay with that?

How do you know? Maybe it just isn't polished enough to show off, but they're getting there? You're assuming that they are misleading people, which may or may not be true.

> Impressive, REAL innovations in VR space (including HMDs) always have a warm welcome here. 3 examples: Nvidia, Valve, InfitEye.

How is this not real innovation? Since when is innovation defined by large companies backing it? You realize that oculus had the same beginning? A small company asking for funding on kickstarter?

I think the PS VR will be ok.

They have had a lot of success making HMD(Head mounted Displays) The PS VR isn't the first HMD that They the have made.
They (Sony) also made [HMZ-T1] (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMZ-T1) and they also made successor models the [HMZ-T2,HMZ-T3] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-HMZ-T3W-Mounted-Viewer-Model/dp/B00FNJGJN0)

These Headsets were well received but expensive but the PS VR is basically the same thing but with increased spec but sold cheaper.

There are games for the PS VR but I think there just basically demos showing off what it can do.

RE7 on the hand I think will be what really drags people in and really opens there eyes.

All it would take is one killer game at the right time that takes true advantage of the PS VR capabilitys to show other developers what they can do.

This bit is just conjecture but.
Hideo Kojima joined the 3D advisory board at [Prologue Immersive] (http://prologueimmersive.com) He's interested in making VR games and his position right now making Death Stranding might actually use the PS VR.

If Death Stranding Does use PS VR you can be damn sure a shit load of people are going straight out to buy the PS VR if they don't have it.

Well here is the issue: If you go with the nVidia glasses then you will probably want to go with an nVidia card: my card, so that the drivers match up. As for monitors I went with this, and it really seems to have enough brightness to compensate for the glasses blocking so much light.

If you are looking for a cheaper setup, I have heard that there are glasses that utilize 60 hz screens, but tend to flicker quite a bit. When I researched them further, there were questions about whether the new drivers supported them or not, and it looks like nVidia is trying to dump them. So...

Regular 3D glasses have a left and right lens that show different images for your brain to merge into 3D. These glasses use two of the right side lens so that you only see the one image and never see the left one, so it looks totally 2D to you while everyone else enjoiys the 3D

The Estar glasses are very good, i saw them recommended here previously and they are a big improvement over the SainSonics particularly for color balance and light bleed.

That requires a different type of headset, sony has one.

Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer

The Sony HMZ-T2 is an upgraded 3D version, I don't think this one is in the US yet.

u/Verodoxys · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

You'll need this to actually see the 3D.

I think you'll also need a GPU that supports it - there's a list of them here.

u/PhotogamerGT · 1 pointr/PSVR

They did also make one that supported 3D and has much better resolution than the PSVR for 3D movies, but was very expensive. It is quite a bit cheaper now and they have made several versions.

Edit: the link I provided I think is a cheap used one. They can sell for close to $2000.

I was actually considering buying it :O

u/Malkmus1979 · 1 pointr/oculus

Ok, but remember the last [HMD Sony sold was priced at $800] (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HMZ-T1-Personal-3D-Viewer/dp/B005LDY0KC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451947571&sr=8-1&keywords=sony+hmz-t1) and didn't have half the functionality that PSVR does.

I just spent 80 bucks on 4 pairs of the battery powered ones yesterday. Gonna take those back and grab four of these. Thanks.

u/Herotosucara · 1 pointr/funny

You just haven't purchased the 3d glasses yet.

EDIT: words

u/I_POTATO_PEOPLE · 1 pointr/movies

You can just buy 2D glasses and watch it in 2D. That's what I did.

u/jrec15 · 1 pointr/movies

LG sells passive circular polarized clip ons. They are awsome. http://www.amazon.com/LG-AG-F220-Cinema-Glasses-LED-LCD/dp/B00540XS32

Carmack did get game developer support rolling though, but HMDs themselves were all ready sold & inevitable despite what Palmer implies.

Nu știu dacă te ajută linkul ăsta, e .com și probabil nu livrează și la noi (plus că pe UK nu sunt ochelarii), dar poți arunca o privire.

u/Shercock_Holmes · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

You could get some 2D Glasses!

It doesn't solve the problem of wearing glasses on your glasses but hopefully you won't get sick. They were made by a dude with the same problem.

u/worshipme3 · 1 pointr/RandomActsOfChristmas

My son would love these 3D glasses for Christmas Lights. We go around and look at all the local neighborhood decorations and lights and this would be perfect for him. Thanks for the contest!

I purchased these:

Work great, were cheap, and had two modes (144hz mode looks best IMO).

Not for sure of their availability in the UK though. Good Luck!

For $510 + $157 + a good gaming comp, i think you can get better gaming experience. It's great even without the 3D thing.
