Highly recommend Dr Tungs Tongue Cleaner

Dear lord it's disgusting how much stuff comes off my tongue. And if you smell the stuff you just scraped, you will know forever that you never want that stuff in your mouth. Same with smelling your floss after using it.

u/HavocReigns · 70 pointsr/starterpacks

Tongue scraper. I tried several before landing on this one. It's stainless steel, it'll last virtually forever.

First couple of times you use it will gross you out realizing how much bacteria you had growing on your tongue.

Then, I always rinse with Smart Mouth mouthwash after flossing, tongue scraping and brushing. You can buy it anywhere, grocery store, WalMart, Target, etc. This is the best mouthwash I've found, I never have morning breath since I started using it. I wish it still came in two bottles that you mix, because their new "all-in-one" bottle sucks. But it is what it is.

I brush and floss my teeth multiple times per day. I wasn't introduced to floss as a kid or young adult but have used it since I moved out.

  • I don't like funky tastes in my mouth, so brushing frequently and using mouthwash helps.

  • I love coffee but it can leaves stains on teeth. brush afterwards, if possible, to avoid that.

  • I don't like the feeling of any food pieces between my teeth. Flossing gets rid of that.

That's how I motivate myself. I also have a tongue scraper like these plastic ones. Just helps get any funky taste out of your mouth.
u/signal15 · 21 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

I went last year for the first time since about 2002. To put it lightly, I was scared.

It turns out that my fear of dentists for the previous 16 years was a solid and effective motivator for me to take very good care of my teeth. No cavities. I waited until AFTER the cleaning to tell them how long it had been, and they said it looked like I had been getting cleanings every 6 months. Now, whenever I go in every 6 months, they tell me I consistently have the cleanest teeth of any of their clients (maybe they are lying to make me feel good).

My regimen for the last 17 years:

u/hmspain · 16 pointsr/aspergers

One result of my poor hygiene was a really persistent case of bad breath. All through grammar school, all through high school and college, even when I was brushing twice a day the problem remained.

It made it tough to be around me. Brave (or pissed) people would tell me about it, but I had no idea what to do. Mouth washes didn’t work. Brushing longer didn’t work.

The solution? Simple… a tongue scraper. Twice a day, ten strokes after brushing. The first time you do this, try not to look :-).

If you haven't already, please go see an ENT for an evaluation of the abnormal size and shape of your palatine tonsil. There could be something serious going on here. Is the other one like that too? Go ahead and buy a tongue scraper, it may not be the main cause of your halitosis, but it is surely a contributing factor. I recommend this one:

EDIT: Hey OP, Send me your addy and I'll send you one

u/Disgruntasaurus · 14 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Assuming you already brush before bed, try flossing and using a tongue scraper, too. Don't just brush your tongue; a scraper makes a huge difference. You can find them at most drug stores but I find the GUM brand to be the best. (Should have a brush on one side and a scraper on the other.)

u/AaronCompNetSys · 14 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

I agree that seeing your doctor is a good idea. Mine is mostly dying cells and plaque type stuff.

I prefer this scraper. I use it vigorously first thing, rinse with mouth wash, don't spit it all out. Then gently brush my tongue, roof of mouth, gums and cheeks with my tooth bush. Spit a bit more out but don't rinse until after bushing teeth with small amount of paste.

This has kept my tongue looking better and I have way less of those painful individual taste buds that turn white.

u/yourfuneralpyre · 13 pointsr/AskWomen

Tongue cleaner, for sure. Makes your mouth feel so clean and helps breath a ton. This is the best one I have ever tried (and I've tried a bunch)

I thought it was normal to brush your tongue with a toothbrush, but as I got older and started to get better at dental hygiene I noticed it wasn't the best. All that nasty stuff from the tongue gets mashed up into the bristles. Gross! And the toothbrush didn't even work that well for cleaning the tongue. That's when I decided to find a better way to clean my tongue and I never turned back!

I just bought a 6 pack when I looked it up to link here. That's how certain I am that this is my favorite tongue cleaner for life (or until they stop making them). I use the bristly side to knock the majority of gunk off and then clean it up with the wavy side.

u/caughtinahustle · 10 pointsr/science

I use this one. The same company also sells this gel you can use with the scraper,

u/kodat · 9 pointsr/LifeProTips

Don't brush it, all your doing is moving gunk around but not out. Instead use a Tongue Scraper or something similar to this. Awesome product and you will see all the crap it removes.

u/ddroukas · 8 pointsr/WTF

I feel like someone posts this item every few months, because you can buy these all over the place.

u/smallwhitegirl · 8 pointsr/sex

most of the bad breath smell actually comes from the tongue! do you ever notice a white/grey film on the back of his tongue? I would recommend getting a tongue scraper and recommending both of you try it at the same time (it can have a kind of unpleasant gag reflex when you first try it) so maybe having both of you do it together won't make it seem like its just his problem. I have noticed a huge difference in my breath because I was self conscious of it. You can do a test by licking a spoon and smelling the spoon, if its bad your tongue probably needs some TLC. I recommend this one http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Tungs-Tongue-Cleaner-Stainless/dp/B00064JGBO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1454031984&sr=8-3&keywords=tongue+scraper

u/OMADer2762 · 7 pointsr/omad

Your bad breath could have a few causes.

Dry mouth from slight dehydration or from ketones because you're dipping into ketosis between meals. Drink more water firstly and I think gum or sugar free mints are fine - sometimes we over think things and get lost in the details.

I highly recommend a tongue scraper for general oral hygiene and maybe give this mouthwash
and toothpaste a try. Something like this may be helpful for dry mouth that comes along with fasting/ketone breath.

u/relevant_BSOD · 5 pointsr/britishproblems

IANADentist, I'm not sure if it applies to all electric toothbrushes, but for ultrasonic brushes like a Philips Sonicare you should gently move the brush back and forth and apply only light pressure instead of manically scrubbing back and forth as you might with a traditional toothbrush. Definitely don't just hold it in place and occasionally change position.

You can use the brush to clean your tongue which will help with bad breath, but I also recommend getting something like this - it's amazing the amount of crud this gets off of your tongue, which is usually the source of the bad smells.

u/cwm9 · 5 pointsr/self

Assuming you don't have a medical issue (you probably don't), do these two simple things along with the obvious brushing:

  1. Use a waterpik daily on your gum line and between your teeth. I like to pour in a capful of mouthwash with the water. 1 or 2 tanks of water per session. A classic waterpik is about $40.

  2. Use a tongue scraper daily. After you do this once and see the filth that gets scraped off you will wonder why everyone doesn't do this. Get one of the metal ones with rubberized handles. (E.g. Dr. Tung). They're about $6. http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Tungs-Products-Stainless-Cleaner/dp/B00064JGBO

It will take about a week or two before things really start to get better, but when they do they will be dramatically better.

u/Gracksploitation · 4 pointsr/soylent

> Maybe I’ll try to get it down before I brush my teeth in the morning.

Yeah, I'd definitely say that brushing your teeth after eating would be the best option. Scrape your tongue too.

Buy those, they're like $1.50 a piece.

u/goldstandardalmonds · 4 pointsr/Dentistry

I would scrape it with a metal tongue scraper. This one is really popular: https://www.amazon.ca/Dr-Tungs-Tongue-Cleaner-Stainless/dp/B00064JGBO

I used to use the regular ones like Oral-B, but this one really worked. I had oral surgery and couldn't brush for the first bit, then wasn't allowed to brush the teeth the surgery was on, couldn't floss, only ate soft foods and tldr, it was dank -- I grew 'hair' on my tongue! Anyway, this helped.

Part of it also is diet -- lots of water, but also fresh foods (like raw fruits and veggies) helps.

u/buffalolsx · 3 pointsr/AskDoctorSmeeee

A tongue cleaner.

Others have said thrush. I don't see thrush but I am not a doctor or in the field. I see a build up on the tongue that needs to be cleaned off.

Regarding the bumps, they are normal.

Haha, I feel you. Super smelling morning breath has got to be the worst! The super smell is not a superpower I wanted either. I can smell my husband's sweaty gym clothes in the next room over.

For your husband, maybe he can try using a tongue scraper? It has really helped with my bad breath (and I can taste things better too!) I have this one.

6 week faster here. The hunger I don't know what to tell you. I would get a little hunger when around food. I still have to cook and prepare food for my wife and kid. I already scrape my tongue as part of my dental hygiene. There was definetly more need while I fasted due to the tongue buildup.

u/sarahspins · 3 pointsr/Dentistry

Mine looks like that when I don't clean it. I've become partial to these kind of tongue scrapers because they seem to get so much more off compared to what other types do.

u/HariTerra · 3 pointsr/carnivore

Check your tongue for bacterial buildup, such as a white film. If you have that then you must scrape it off with a tongue scraper. Your tongue should be solid pink with no white or yellow spots. The tongue is usually the main culprit of bad breath.

Meat can also get stuck between teeth and begin to decay and give off a rotten, acidic smell. Buy floss picks and floss your teeth in the morning and night, along with brushing your teeth and brushing gently, but thoroughly, over your gums. Use coconut oil instead of commercial toothpaste.

Look into oil pulling, which is swishing with coconut oil for about 10 to 20 minutes. It pulls out bacteria since they stick to the fat in the oil. Then you spit it out into the garbage. The oil reaches many spots you cannot reach with flossing and brushing alone. Make sure to use virgin coconut oil or cold pressed coconut oil. Never used refined coconut oil.

Makeup (although I might be beating a dead horse with this one):

Real Techniques Expert Face Brush ($9 on Amazon)

Beautyblender makeup sponge (~$25 for 2) - IMO, the quality is worth the iffy price tag.

Hair:

Aveeno Nourish + Moisturize shampoo/conditioner (~$9 each) - hair products are almost always hit-or-miss for me. This is the shampoo/conditioner duo that I always come back to. Joico and Frederick Fekkai couldn't even compare.

Neutrogena Triple Moisture hair mask ($7 on Amazon) - best hair mask ever, and I've tried nearly every hair mask under the sun. Doesn't hurt that it is wallet-friendly.

"Wet Brush" hair brush ($9 on Amazon) - I have past-my-boobs-long hair and this is the only brush I can stand using. It's a lot less painful in terms of detangling, and it's AMAZING on wet hair (as its name suggests).

Teeth/oral hygeine:

Sonicare electric toothbrush ($40) - definitely a lot more effective than manual toothbrushes. Start off brushing with GENTLE pressure, as it can be slightly painful if you're only used to manual toothbrushes. After a decent number of uses, you'll get used to it. My boyfriend, who absolutely hated the Sonicare when he first tried it because it "hurt a lot" and even made his gums bleed, is now forever-converted after seeing the difference it makes.

Orabrush tongue cleaner (4 for $12 on Amazon) - I'm kind of eccentric when it comes to oral hygiene, so I use these religiously (i.e. whenever I brush my teeth.) Cleaning your tongue regularly helps keep off gross buildup, which contributes to stinky breath :p.

u/my_man_krishna · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

On the subject of tongue brushing, you can also employ a tongue scraper to remove the offending biofilm. I've been using the same stainless steel one in tandem with a toothbrush for years and it works splendidly.

u/BluntsnBoards · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

I used to do the same thing till I got a tongue scraper. Thing is amazing, you can clean to the back of your mouth w/ less gag and works much better.

u/resolutions316 · 2 pointsr/marriedredpill

I will use this to promote the single most impactful thing I did for my attractiveness/hygiene last year:

https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Tungs-Tongue-Cleaner-Stainless/dp/B00064JGBO

This thing is FUCKING AMAZING

I know, I know, tongue scrapers. You've heard of this. "Why not just brush your tongue with your toothbrush?" as my sister in law asked.

Trust me.

I brushed my tongue every day, but the first time I used this thing so much white shit came off my tongue I had an existential crisis.

Buy it, use it, love it.

BONUS: read the amazon reviews. They are fucking bonkers.

u/spotby · 2 pointsr/whatisthisthing

This is a tongue scraper. here is another one on amazon: (https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Tungs-Tongue-Cleaner-Stainless/dp/B07BB2LS1N)

https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Tungs-Tongue-Cleaner-Stainless/dp/B07BB2LS1N

u/caquilino · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

And a tongue scraper.

Most bacteria causing bad breath is on your tongue. Particularly the last third of your tongue—even if you brush it. It's hard to reach. Blah, blah sources. Anyway, a tongue scraper can scrape that stuff away.

Amazon dude, the reviews are testament. And I agree.

u/DocHowser · 2 pointsr/Dentistry

Therabreath is great! But only works if the smell is coming from your mouth. What kind of tongue scraper are you using? I find the plastic ones don’t do anything. I like the metal dr Tung’s tongue scraper from amazon. (Link below)

Dr. Tung's Tongue Cleaner, Stainless Steel (colors may vary) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00064JGBO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_s4yyCbCM1S1YM

Other possibilities for bad breath 1. post nasal drip from chronic allergies 2. Acid reflux (smells coming from your stomach.

My best guess is still tonsil stones though, even if they’re not visible. They hide in the folds and holes of the tonsils.

u/joels4321 · 2 pointsr/whatisthisthing

Strangely shaped Tongue Scraper?

u/elixerboi · 2 pointsr/Dentistry

If you do a good job brushing/flossing & see the dentist regularly, and thus have no huge cavities or plaque/calculus buildup, your breath is probably not noticeable. The remaining part that contributes to bad breath is actually your tongue.

To test:

  1. Lick your wrist or the back of your hand with the full length of your tongue, try to start with as far back to the base of your tongue as possible (might gag). Let it dry for a couple seconds before smellin that good stuff.

  2. probably more accurate- Take a normal spoon and flip it upside down to gently scrape your tongue from all the way far back to the front. Let it dry a couple seconds again before wafting. If you haven't brushed or used a tongue scraper on your tongue before it will probably have a lot of mucus-looking goo as an added kicker.

Have fun! Here's a link from my quick google search for cleaning your tongue (I didn't pay attn to whatever products or other info they have so don't take my word for it all)

I'm a fan of Breathrx's plastic tongue scrapers as they have a regular and soft side. https://www.amazon.com/BreathRx-Tongue-Scraper-Scrapers-bulk/dp/B01LMO2AXM Unsure if they are meant to be disposed of after "x" uses, but I wash and wipe/dry mine. I don't like metal ones as the ones I have used had an edge that was a little too aggressive for my liking.

u/BigBootyBear · 2 pointsr/Dentistry

I use this tongue scraper daily(it was the ONLY ONE that worked. Oral B, Orabrush, backside of toothbrushes - all didnt work) and still after 4 or 5 scrapes there is visible white residue. Do you have any idea why nothing works for me except that hunk of metal?

I don't think I have Closys Mouthwash in my country. Could you tell me what makes it good so I could look for those ingredients in the mouthwashes available in my country?

u/tygrshel · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Here is my routine with items and products that work for me.

DAILY Morning:

  1. Scrape tongue; rinse with water; brush teeth for 2 minutes; floss; rinse 1 minute with alcohol-free mouthwash and then gargle 30 seconds with a little more mouthwash; brush tongue with vegetable glycerin.
  2. Shower with warm- not hot- water; shampoo (every other day) and condition (every day); wash pits, feet, in between toes, crotch and crack with antibacterial soap and washcloth; wash rest of body with loofah and body wash of choice.
  3. Wash face with warm water and a gentle face cleanser; shave; apply witch hazel to face, neck, and forehead; apply moisturizer with SPF
  4. Dry off completely, especially pits, in between toes, crotch, and crack; apply Fresh Balls , deodorant, foot cream or powder , and hand cream (as necessary).

    DAILY Night:

  5. Step 1 of morning routine
  6. Wash hands and clean under finger nails * with antibacterial soap
  7. Wash face with warm water and face cleanser; apply moisturizer.

WEEKLY Sat or Sun: (In addition to daily routines)

  8. Use a face scrub in the shower, gently, especially to the areas you will be shaving; clean under toenails with a nail brush*
  9. Soak feet, particularly in summer and/or you have to wear work boots;
  10. While feet are soaking trim fingernails * and clean under them with pointed end of a nail file*, carefully; dry feet.
  11. Trim toenails* and clean under them with nail file*.
  12. Check nose, ears and eyebrows for any hairs that need to be trimmed or anything in between eyebrows that needs to be removed.
  13. Shave back of neck and around ears

    * Use separate tools for hands and feet to avoid spreading any potential fungus to your hands

    BI-WEEKLY Sat or Sun:

  14. Manscape after the morning routine.

I have a few resources that have specific guides, I will post them later. I hope this is somewhat helpful and if you have any questions, let me know.

Anything is possible!

It's awesome that you continue to go with a broken knee. I drag myself in there complaining about being sore from an earlier workout.

My short term goal is to get used to drinking 64oz of water every single day. I can make myself workout and I can stick to a diet plan, but I seem to be incapable of making myself drink more than 3 cups of water a day.

I have a huge weight loss journey ahead of me, with over 100 pounds still to lose. I just got a fitbit to get a better idea of how much I'm actually moving, but I think I really have to get a handle on water intake and sleeping enough to start seeing a real difference on the scale.

Clean tongues are important too

u/H2017 · 1 pointr/askgaybros

In addition to this advice: I recommend recommending an Orabrush tongue brush and this mouthwash. Be sure to use it as directed (one serving swished around for a minute; one serving gargled for 30 seconds).

This is how I eliminated morning breath ;)

Still haven't found a cure all but I have found these two things help, a lot.

  1. Tongue scraper, as others have mentioned. I use GUM's Fresh-R Tongue Cleaner.

  2. The other thing I started doing was using Dr. Katz's TheraBreath Plus Oral Spray.

    **

    Afternoon: TheraBreath.

Evening**: Brush teeth, scrape tongue, floss teeth, mouthwash, TheraBreath.

Serious reply here... I got a tongue scraper on a whim a few years back, and it is honestly the best thing ever. I find a combo of floss and scraping more helpful at reducing halitosis than a tooth brush any day (though you should really be doing all three). It's hard to go back after you see the kind of disgusting gunk you can pull off your tongue. The one I got is similar to this. 10/10, no question. 0/10 with rice. Do not eat the scrapings at all. That would be gross.

Seriously! I mean, that's what they're designed for, this is the set I got.

Super cheap, just be careful your first time because the edge is sharp and you might get a micro-cut or two if you're not careful, but it's very easy to tell how hard you need to press after a swipe or two.

It will return your tongue to a vibrant pink, and had an immediate effect on flavor for me.

A tongue scraper might be helpful. I use mine pretty much every day.

On a side note, I was trying to find the exact quote I was mocking. I failed, but I found something infinitely better. Shutupandtakemymoney.

you want something like this http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Tungs-Tongue-Cleaner-Stainless/dp/B00064JGBO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453268928&sr=8-1&keywords=tongue+cleaner+metal

its basically a strap of metal that you can scrape the white/colored layer on your tongue. ive always used one since i was a kid, and its great for breath too

What you have is normal. It's a boifilm caused by bacteria on the tongue. It is not thrash or a yeast infection, like others have said. Many people have this even without smoking.

What you want is a tongue scrapper. Use this before brushing your teeth, and make sure you use mouthwash to kill off bacteria before it forms another biofilm. It'll also help your breath and improve your sense of taste.

I suggest this one.

I experience this as well. I use my Orabrush Tongue Cleaner shortly after each serving.

Stop brushing your tongue and get a Dr Tung scraper from your local Sprouts Market or other hippy grocer.

I had to give up toothpaste because I would gag/puke when brushing. This thing has seriously made it so much better.

Try a tongue scraper in stainless steel.

You would not believe the crap that came off my right after I quit. I use after I brush in the morning- don't know if it is smoking related or not. But it was almost clay-like.. it's lessoned considerably in the past month- but also read these amazon reviews! It will really help your breath!

It works way better than just brushing and mouth wash.

Also- wouldn't hurt to schedule a dentist cleaning..

Others have recommended tongue scrapers, but I prefer a tongue brush. It's more effective than a toothbrush for this.

Also, stay well hydrated.

This is the one I use:

can be one of those, or a plastic one like this

u/Lanulus · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Buy dental insurance (or a dental plan.) Then get yourself checked out. If your insurance doesn't cover everything you need, ask if you can set up a payment plan.

Either way, start working on your oral hygiene. Just because you go to the dentist once doesn't mean you can get away without brushing your teeth.

For this you should get a tongue scraper, brush 2-3 times a day, and swish your mouth with hydrogen peroxide (you can get a bottle for $1.) Flossing is also a good idea. If you can afford it, a Waterpik takes a lot of the hassle out of that.
