I didn't realize this thing was still on the market. It was overpriced when it first launched. At $79 in 2017, you're just throwing away money for a name.

Here is a USB DVD burner for less than half the price of the SuperDrive:

https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Portable-External-GP65NB60/dp/B00ODDE33U/

u/0ldblu3 · 21 pointsr/Showerthoughts

USB DVD drives are cheap and it's a good idea to have one stocked at your company IT department, or just in your drawer at home. Link to Amazon $21.

u/Jokherb · 16 pointsr/medicine

Here's one for $14 from Amazon that plugs into a USB port. But the whole situation is ridiculous. EHRs were supposed to be interoperable. We've invested decades and billions of dollars in an EHR infrastructure that is broken beyond repair, and will never be able to work as intended. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

u/The_Funky_Stink · 10 pointsr/pcmasterrace

ASUS BW-16D1HT ~$80USD. Only rips CDs as I haven't installed MakeMKV, but as soon as I get off my lazy ass I'm going to try that on ubuntu

Have been using a Pioneer BDR-XD04 on my macs for a number of years for plain 1080p rips using MakeMKV

u/BlackDave · 8 pointsr/techsupportgore

Funny thing for Android users. Samsung made a DVD drive that works on phones and tablets. No idea what you need to do to play dvd movies straight off the disc if it's possible.

u/ggFuji · 7 pointsr/Korean

I'd expect this sort of attitude towards disc drives in 30 years from now when they are ancient but really man it wasn't that long ago when every computer had one. My laptop doesn't have a disc drive either but I bought a usb one for 20 bucks.

How I would do it is very easy. I use both windows and mac and it's the same on both.

  1. Plug portable usb disc drive into computer usb drive. You can get one here: https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Portable-External-GP65NB60/dp/B00ODDE33U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1502904171&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+portable+dvd

  2. Select all the files on the disc and copy them to my dual flash drive. Purchasable here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013UHK1M6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

  3. Insert the flash drive into my phone and copy the files to my phone.

It's not illegal for you to do this. You are just copying files from a disc to your computer without any intent to sell it. Also I see people on these subreddits sharing full photocopies of language books over google drive so it's not like we are so careful on legality. You are either being over dramatic or serious I can't tell but this is kind of sad especially if you are over 20 years old and don't know how to use a disc drive lol.

u/acid_jazz · 5 pointsr/Korean

Isn't this a bit dramatic? It's seriously not hard to hook up one of these and then export the audio to your phone. I've done this millions of times and it's a lot easier than learning Korean.

u/[deleted] · 5 pointsr/apple

so are you looking to rip or just play?

Rip this one, this is what i use and it gets the job done for really cheap(and this one is cheaper i would go this one but its not a feed in it pops out)-http://www.amazon.com/Blu-Ray-Player-External-Laptop-Burner/dp/B001TVAU0E/ref=sr_1_11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1405695288&sr=1-11&keywords=blu+ray+burner

u/third-eye · 5 pointsr/mac

It's not worth $80, it's too expensive for what you get. The cable is hard wired, if it breaks you need a repair (not worth the cost) or replace it. It will only work with Macs that don't have an optical drive, which could be a deal breaker too (and I'd like to know the reasoning behind that decision, it's an artificial limitation built into the firmware). Say you also have a Mac with an internal drive, if that one dies you can't even use the external one. Whoever decided that needs a punch in the face. Sorry for the rant, I just think it's not a good idea to buy one.

It seems strange that the one you got didn't work. Any drive should work. I needed to read a few optical discs recently. I just bought an eternal enclosure on Amazon for 8 bucks and ripped the drive out of some old laptop I had lying around. This one is the best seller on Amazon. The reviews are good and some mention it'll work with Macs.

u/NotmuhReddit · 5 pointsr/makemkv

This is the drive I use, yeah you have to flash custom firmware which can be found here (in the description). It's basically just open the firmware flasher and flash, it's one click with this drive (It's the official Asus firmware flasher, just modded to flash the custom firmware).

u/doowopshabop · 4 pointsr/buildapcforme

Here's a solid Intel option for this budget— basic motherboard, excellent CPU for current-gen games. It will have trouble if you start stacking too many intensive Minecraft mods, but otherwise it'll tear through the games you're asking about. The next card up from the R7 260X that people like to suggest is the GTX 750 Ti. It won't show much benefit— you'd really have to go all the way to a GTX 660 before it makes sense.

You can hop in there and play around with what some sensible upgrade/downgrade options are— I'd start with more RAM, which you could always do at any point down the line. Speaking of upgrades, this base can technically support upgrades all the way up to an i7 CPU and GTX 770 video card, though you'd be wise to upgrade the PSU as well at that point.

If you have any questions or feedback, I'll be around.

Pioneer BDR-XD05B 6x Slim... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OD39P6A?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I use this and it has served me really well for 700 movies now.

u/manny15 · 4 pointsr/community

So let me get this straight.
Let's say I want to do what you suggested. I go ahead and buy the box set, which is $82. Let's say I don't own a TV or DVD player (you'd be surprised how many people don't). That's another $24.99 for the DVD player and another $150 for the TV. That's great, but that still doesn't let me watch it on a tablet or phone. For that I would need a computer, but not just any computer, one with a CD-ROM (computers don't have them anymore) or let's just say an external DVD drive, which would be around $25.

OK, now we have our digital copies. The problem is, unless you have a phone with a LOT of space, you can't have all 6 seasons on your phone. You're gonna need to store them somewhere in the cloud, and I won't get into pricing for storage. All of this just so that I can watch it on my phone on the way to work.

Or I could just spend 50 bucks for now.

u/Enickols12 · 4 pointsr/pcgamingtechsupport

Basically, anything from a name brand (ASUS, LG, Samsung, ect) in your price point will work well. I have tried to buy cheaper ones before and had them get to me broken.

This DVD drive should work well for you.

u/MankYo · 4 pointsr/audiophile

The Onkyo CD player has digital optical and coaxial outputs, and analog outputs.

The Behringer only has analog inputs, but includes Tracktion software for acquiring audio from it. Those could work together (with a pile of cables and adapters) but you'd be converting the CD's digital information to analog and back to digital, and then you'd have to re-encode that into your preferred format.

For $15, you can get an external CD drive and use whatever ripping software you want, save a few steps, and get more precise rips:

just open a file browser, copy the contents to a flash drive. what's on the drive, because some stuff like game installs or bootable stuff may not work. alternatively get one of these for 15 bucks https://www.amazon.com/External-Optical-Notebook-Computer-Dustproof/dp/B00X7DH5GE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1539567007&sr=8-3&keywords=cd+drive+usb

u/silvernutter · 3 pointsr/Gamecube

As crammond94 commented, SD media launchers are not a perfect solution, even the best SD cards will still lag during demanding sequences. Sometimes it is hard to see the lag, but it is very apparent in choppy audio.

One thing you could do for minimal investment is to burn your own miniDVDs, use your SD media Launcher to load swiss, swap disks to the burned disk, and launch it via swiss without the need for a modchip. Burned miniDVDs generally work as well as the real thing. If you go this route, burn as slowly as possible, or you may get errors on the disk.

Other than that, the most convenient method would be to mod a Wii, install USBLoaderGX and Nintendont, and load gamecube games from an external hard drive. Wiis with broken disk drives are on ebay all the time for ~$15-$20.

You can get vinyl wrap from a number of locations online, often used for automotive panels. I had leftovers from a furniture project that used a black wood grain vinyl wrap for drawer fronts. Amazon link below. I just used that because it was handy. It worked great, but if I did it again, I might search for a faux carbon fiber print, which looks really cool for ... anything.

I just cut a 1/2" plywood sheet to 24" x 24". Drilled and countersunk the mounting holes for the wall studs, and drilled holes for 1/4-20 threaded inserts for the VESA mounting plate. Big wood screws probably would have worked too, but the threaded inserts seemed like a good idea. Then I sanded the panel, vacuumed it thoroughly to get the dust off, then applied the vinyl wrap, which is just a big sticker. You never want to completely remove the peel away backing from the vinyl sheet before applying it. It is too sticky and easily ruined if it sticks to itself or you try to peel it off of another surface. Peel the backing sheet about 4", stick it to one end of the panel surface, then slowly and carefully rub the sheet flat across the panel while pulling the backing sheet away progressively. You only get one chance to apply it correctly. Trying to pull it off of the panel will likely tear up the plywood. Then use an Xacto knife to trim any excess, and wrap the ends like a present. Finally, mount it to the wall with long drywall screws, attached the VESA plate, and hang the chassis.

  • Vinyl sheet that I used - Anything will work

  • Threaded inserts

  • 1/4-20 x 1/2" Truss Head Screws

  • VESA Mounting Plate

  • Black Cable Mounts - Must be screwed to panel or will eventually pull the vinyl sheet away from the panel from the weight of the cables.

  • Slim USB DVD Drive - Sits on top of the power supply.

I taped the DVD drive to the power supply with this, which is thick, super strong, and yet removable without shreading or leaving any gunk or glue behind. That tape also works fantastically for mounting LED strips, the best that I have tried so far. It's rubbery and doesn't feel super sticky and can be pulled off fairly easily - at first. After about a minute, it bonds really well to any surface, then takes a lot of effort to pull up again. Great stuff !!

u/Ecks83 · 3 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

Your best bet is probably to just buy an external drive.

You can get DVD-RW pretty cheap: https://www.amazon.ca/External-Stylish-SDRW-08D2S-U-BLK-AS/dp/B006HUMYCO/

External Blu-ray drives starts around $100: https://www.amazon.ca/Pioneer-Electronics-External-BDR-XD05S-Silver/dp/B00OLZCD5K/

If you already have a blu-ray drive lying around you could save a bit of money by getting a 5.25" enclosure like this but from what I can see there isn't a huge selection and if you don't already have the drive it will be expensive, heavier, and much larger than just buying one of the slim external drives above. The enclosure isn't worth it for DVD even if you have the drive since the external drives are already cheaper than it.

For a bit under budget, how about the ASUS Vivobook K570UD? It has a stronger graphics card than the Acer Aspire E 15, which will be helpful in the games you listed. It has:

  • i5-8250U 4-core processor

  • 8 GB of RAM

  • 256 GB SSD storage

  • 1080p 15.6" display

  • GTX 1050 2 GB graphics card

  • Weight of 4.2lbs and battery life up to 9 hours

The i7 processor is only a slight improvement over the i5 in this generation, they are both 4 core/8 thread processors. The laptop runs Windows 10 Home. The device is easily mask-able as any regular laptop. The games you listed should run fine on medium-high settings. There is a numpad, but no DVD drive. It has the ports you listed. You can buy an external DVD drive for cheap.

If you have a computer it should be able to play DVDs if it has a CD drive. If it doesn't you can get an external CD/DVD drive pretty cheaply on Amazon and other online shops nowadays. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Rioddas-External-Portable-Rewriter-Superdrive/dp/B07DLRG9VH/

u/eyun · 3 pointsr/apple

This seems to be the cheapest that I can find, though it was really a cursory search.

A review there says that it should be able to do what you need it to.
>I purchased the "Blu-Ray Player External USB DVD RW Laptop Burner Drive" in order to read Blu-ray discs on my Mac. Although the OS X operating system does not permit Blu-ray disc playback, you can use a Blu-ray drive with MakeMKV to rip the encription off of Blu-ray discs and convert them to MKV format (MakeMKV is a free bata release that works very well). Once converted to MKV format (the process is lossless) the files can be played back on a computer or compressed using a program like Handbrake.

I haven't tried this out at all (haven't even read all the reviews), so don't take this as an endorsement from me.

It's a little over $50 and it runs off a USB 2.0 port though, so it seems to meet your criteria.

u/misterfox20 · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

For an external bluray player, $57 as good of a deal as I can find: https://www.amazon.com/Blu-Ray-Player-External-Laptop-Burner/dp/B001TVAU0E/

An internal reader (that replaces your computer DVD drive) will run you about $35

I have a 5.25" ODD that I would like to migrate to be external, so I can get a fan controller/more fans for my case. It isn't pressing, but if at some point in the future I want to do this, I know what to get.

Any good external enclosures for a SATA ODD? This is what I have, for reference.

as /u/Angelfiji said, you need to register your game with origin. So yeah if you were to go on your husbands computer, register the game with origin, then download origin on your computer, you should be able to download the game through origin as long as your logged into your account.

Alternatively if all else fails you could get an external disc player. they're dirt cheap nowadays. something like this one would work fine. you just plug it in a usb 2.0 port.

It would probably be a good idea to get a USB optical drive anyways for situations like this. They're pretty cheap: https://www.amazon.com/Electronics-Portable-Rewriter-External-GP60NB50/dp/B00C2AMK2M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1474446267

Your best bet currently would be using another computer to rip the disc to an .iso file and mount it as a virtual drive on your new PC. I would be wary of installing onto another PC and copying the installed files.

  • Seriously wait to learn about Ryzen 5 (3 days away). The R5 leaks are making me really second guess the 7700k I bought.

  • ATX case means loads of room. Consider a mATX or mITX if you dont plan to do SLI (Dont do SLI anyways). I assume you're college-age ish. A smaller case means a lot in a dorm room.

  • If you stick with mATX or ATX, you have loads of room, zero need for a m.2 SSD, get a traditional 2.5" SATA SSD for half the cost. If you go the mITX route, switch the internal 3TB HDD to an external HDD

  • Consider a used 1070 100% in your price range if you dont get the m.2 SSD that I seriously dont think you'll need.

  • I built my mITX in december of 2016 and was terrified to not have a CD drive, so i bought this. I'll be honest, I dont think I've used it since I installed the drivers.

Summary -- Consider a smaller motherboard mATX or mITX which allows a smaller case, drop the m.2 for a 2.5' SSD, look at used 1070s, wait for Ryzen 5 to announce, honestly think about the last time you used a CD.

It's way more than $1500... the build you linked isn't the same at all and doesn't include peripherals nor some other add-ins.

/u/forrealimadetective linked a pretty accurate build here which comes out to about $1900. Add the capture card ($150), upgrade the optical drive to the external DVD writer (+$15), anti-virus ($30), flash drive ($10?), t-shirt ($10?), and the value of the warranty ($100++?) and the total is at least $2200 in parts alone, or more if you consider the fact that the case is custom designed for this build and isn't otherwise available.

Still a better deal if you build it yourself, but not nearly as bad of a deal as a $1500 PC for $2750. Honestly this ends up not being that terrible of a deal for someone who isn't tech-savvy enough to put together this list of products and assemble them, and install OS/software.

Also, the better spec you linked would be something like $2400 if you also include the keyboard, mouse, monitor, and capture card.

As much as I like new toys, if it were me, I'd bite my lip and do the responsible thing by getting AppleCare for the computer. :P

If you already did get AppleCare, I'd say go for the external drive; optical media is falling quickly out of usage, but you can get a much better deal than Apple's SuperDrive if you choose to in the future. The Apple Store does have a respectable selection of third-party drives, on the other hand.

This is the one I bought when my CD tray broke on my laptop.

I had that same idea! My plan when I get some money is to get:

  1. A small laptop/netbook.

  2. A mini projector.

  3. A usb BluRay drive.

  4. And a bunch of BluRay disks.

I burn all the movies, music, books, documentaries, archives, libraries, videos, tv shows, and games that I want, then put the projector, netbook and USB drive in a Faraday Cage. This gives me an unbeatable storage archive that is waterproof, drop-proof, EMP-proof, corruption-resistant, and very portable.

Nope.

Honestly, matching the "feature set" identically is important at all with how much better digital distribution is at this point. Consoles and PC are fundamentally different; PC is going to be digital-download-focused, while consoles are clearly going to be using physical media. Trying to download digital games on a console right now is expensive and inferior to the physical option, which is cheaper and has its obvious advantages. In the same vein, digital downloads are superior on PC. It's different, and they don't need to point-for-point match consoles because that's unnecessary. They're already way past them.

A cheaper one: https://smile.amazon.com/Blu-Ray-Player-External-Laptop-Burner/dp/B001TVAU0E
I make no guarantees for the quality of the no-name one there though. It claims to have a Panasonic drive inside... you can be the judge of that. But it's 1/3 the price.

u/construktz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Since you want a Blu-Ray drive, get a Lenovo Y510p i5, which doesn't have an optical drive at all mind you, and still for under budget, you can get an External Blu-Ray Drive.

Keep in mind that you aren't going to get good battery life out of these things, but they are by far the most graphically powerful rigs in their price range. You can't beat them until the $1300 range.

I don't know about the protection in the retail game. But you could maybe download an ISO of the game and entering your own cd key? Not sure if the game even has a cd key. That's technically not pirating I think. PM me if you need some more info on that :)
Forget that. Game is protected.

The same ASUS optical drive is ~$18 on Amazon:

Comparisons and reviews show that the Gigabyte DH3 and superior models are bit better for SLI (and already comes with the cables). It's your choice, the ASRock is still very good.

The OC'd ASUS 660 Ti has been reviewed as the superior of the bunch - but again, your call. =)

You can find Z68 motherboards for less, like the Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3 for $88.99 after $10 MIR with similar features

Not a big fan of Seagate - too many negative reviews online. Would shell out a little more for Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB drive.

Asus DRW24B1ST drive is cheaper than that LG one

For $69.99, you can get case with better cable management

Everything else looks good though

You can add an optical drive of course, the board supports it and the case has the space. https://www.amazon.com/Asus-Serial-ATA-Internal-Optical-DRW-24B1ST/dp/B0033Z2BAQ for example. All of them seem to have a black front :/ An external drive might be better, https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Portable-External-GP65NB60/dp/B00ODDEABK/. Then the NZXT Source 340 would be an option, for a better case.

PS: The Samsung 960 Evo could replace the SATA-SSD, it is a faster NVMe drive, you have the budget and would profit from it.

I have no idea. It's a custom case, and the guy who made it said this one should work, but that's not available any more, and also seems to be a bit pricey. I found this one, but I'm not sure if it's the right one or any good.

u/zaise_chsa · 2 pointsr/PS4

Buy an external USB DvD player instead of doing some crazy set up with your PS4. Most will work with a Mac. External Blu Ray Players will need a third party app, which are sometimes unstable on the mac.

Here's an LG DVD Player for cheap on Amazon and it can write DvD and CD: https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Portable-Rewriter-External/dp/B00C2AMK2M/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1484868919&sr=1-3&keywords=usb+dvd+player

If you must buy an Apple DvD player (though it's over priced at $79.99) here's the link: http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD564LL/A/apple-usb-superdrive

u/jerkstore4 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Actually no, not with those instructions anyway. The program they have you download to write the installer to the drive is only offered as a windows executable as far as I know. I don't know of any ways to prepare the flash drive on mac.

I'm sure you could find a way to prepare the flash drive. I don't know if you have access to any windows computers. I guess you could install windows to your macbook via bootcamp and run the program there but that'd be pretty roundabout.

It may not be a bad idea to pick up a disc drive. You could pick up an internal one for between $10-$20. Another option is a USB DVD burner. Since I hardly ever use DVDs apart from installing OSs, I only have one USB DVD drive that I move wherever needed. It comes in handy since hardly any portable computers come with optical drives anymore too.

The 9600k and 9700k are fairly similar gaming wise as most games don't really make use of the extra cores/threads on the 9700k. No need for thermal paste, the cooler comes with it preapplied. The HP EX920 is the cheapest 1tb M.2 SSD with a cache and is only $5 more than the cheapest 1tb SSD with a cache (the 2.5" MX500). The i5-9600k+2070S is a better pair than the 9700k+1660ti.

The H700i, like many modern, stylish cases, doesn't have the 5.25" bay needed for an ODD. If one is needed, you can get a USB one for like $25(I've got that one on my desk right now and it works just fine). Mounting an AIO is fairly simple since it's one piece; all it is is mounting the waterblock like you would with an air cooler and then mounting the rad and fans to the case.

> plug into his Navy laptop (which has Windows 7) via USB.

So, I'm going to be genuinely surprised if an asset like that is going to let you plug up a USB DVD drive (or even a thumb drive). The ports are very likely locked down to prevent removable media.

The whole Manning incident caused a lot of IT stuff to go on lockdown.

  1. I'd be super cautious on sending him one as it could get him in trouble.

  2. I'm curious why he's unable to purchase one himself

Technically any of them should work, this one has decent reviews and is cheap:

    https://amzn.com/B00C2AMK2M

Again though, if this is a military computer asset the ports/removable media are very likely disabled and if they aren't they likely are recording the devices that are plugged in and send up a red flag if they are not allowed (like thumb drives).

Drivers are very likely going to be required but a basic one should probably be ok.
u/Martelol · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Pretty much this.

As for your not-enough-sata-ports issue, you'll need an internal pcie card or a usb->sata adapter.

Card: http://www.amazon.com/Crest-Port-SATA-PCI-Express-SY-PEX40039/dp/B005B0A6ZS/

Adapter: http://www.amazon.com/Anker%C2%AE-Converter-Adapter-Cable-included/dp/B005B3VO24/

There's really zero reason to go the USB adapter route though, at that point you might as well just get an external dvd drive: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Portable-External-SE-218CB-RSBS/dp/B00DBV28TG/

u/SaneBRZ · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The optical drive limits your choices. More and more manufacturers are dropping it. Nonetheless, here are some suggestions with a DVD drive:

Sony Vaio T15:

  • 15.6 inch, 1920x1080p display
  • Intel i5-3337U + 4 GB of RAM
  • 750 GB HDD + 32 GB SSD cache
  • Price: $799

It's one of the lightest 15 inch laptops out there with an optical drive. With a weight of only 4.9 lbs it's quite portable. Battery life is stellar, but 4 hours should be doable, if you don't turn up the display brightness to a maximum. Would handle all your needs for several years and has enough storage for an extended music and video collectionn. It also would feel quite fast due to the SSD cache (a fast storage solution compared to spinning hard drives).

If you want something smaller and more portable, you can take a look at the Toshiba Portege R935-ST4N01:

  • 13.3 inch, 1366x768p display
  • Intel i5-3210M + 8 GB of RAM
  • 1 TB HDD
  • Price: $749.99

Very light weight, under 3.5 lbs, and with long battery life. One charge would carry you through the whole day. You can expect about 7 to 8 hours of usage till it shuts down. Due to it's size, it wouldn't be a problem to take it to class and make notes with it. The display isn't a high resolution one like in the Sony Vaio T15, but it's not bad for a 13.3 inch laptop. And the HDD is quite large with 1 TB of storage.

And an honorable mention to the Apple MacBook Pro 13:

  • 13.3 inch, 1280x800p display
  • Intel i5 CPU + 4 GB of RAM
  • 500 GB HDD
  • Price: $999

It's a refurbished model and still it's more expensive than the other two, but it's an Apple product. You can expect better build quality and better customer service.

I don't know how often you use a DVD drive (optical drive), but if you just use it once or twice a month an external one could be viable option. You could get a laptop without one, which would give you a broader selection.
u/AKrider23 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I very rarely use it, so I figured it wasn't worth putting one in the system, and I bought this. Plus it's nice because I can use it on different computers easily.

u/ty04 · 2 pointsr/PleX

Not OP, but I use the ASUS BW-16D1HT and MakeMKV with great success.

u/12_nick_12 · 2 pointsr/PleX

> assuming

Yes and then use MakeMKV to remux them, by doing this though you will end up with 25-50gb movie MKVs which I love, but it's a lot of space to some people. I've been looking at this one I just haven't bought it yet. [Samsung Burner] (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-External-Blu-ray-SE-506CB-RSBD/dp/B00JJGFRIQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459197428&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+bluray+burner)

u/sparklingwaterll · 2 pointsr/htpc

The prices for external or internal Blu-Ray drives aren't great. Plus the added expensive of purchasing software to play the Blu-rays on the computer make it expensive. Then the fact you can buy some bare bones Blu-Ray player on amazon for the same price or less of a Blu-Ray drive it just makes the whole proposition no longer practical. Now if its more for the principle then the practicality. Then I'd go with the cheapest drive with the best reviews.
Like this one. But I have no experience with it.

u/CyberJeeves · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

That's not really going to happen. Machines at that budget don't have 1080p screens on them, so why would they have Blu-Ray drives to play movies at 1080p if the screen can't even display it?

Your best option is to buy a refurbished Asus Q501LA, which has:

  • i5 4200U processor
  • 8GB ram
  • 750GB HDD 5400RPM
  • 15.6" 1920x1080 15.6" IPS touchscreen
  • Integrated HD 4400 graphics
  • ~4.5 hours of battery life
  • 0.9" thick, 5.1 pounds

The IPS screen on this laptop has an excellent build IPS screen that'll provide an extraordinary viewing experience. However, it doesn't come with a blu ray player built in, so just buy an external drive. It's more expensive than you originally planned, but you're really going to get the best experience.
u/kiwiandapple · 2 pointsr/buildapcforme

Well this is a custom PC. There are other options out there.

This for example could be an option as well. It only got 500GB of storage and no blue-ray. So you would have to get an external blue-ray drive. This comes out even cheaper and this system even got windows 8.1, wich is not bad. It as well got wifi!

It as well is a lot smaller compared to our box! :]

There's not really many options for you without access to another PC. The only option I can think of is setting up a rooted android phone as a bootable Ubuntu liveCD and making a USB via Windows 10 ISO and dd (disk dump) command, or seeing if you can boot directly from the Windows 10 ISO from your rooted android phone. Here's a link to the playstore app which lets you do so. If you also don't have a rooted android phone, you may end up having to buy a USB CD/DVD burner to try at the library. Or see if someone will ship you a Windows 10 bootable USB drive (which would require you to input your own product key during install), but that is of course risky with all the viruses and malware floating around. Hope any of this helps!

You can always purchase a USB CD writer for rather cheap and duplicate it yourself from a PC or non-iOS smartphone.

The Define R5 is a pretty similar case. It is also very quiet and a bit larger, but it has slots for an optical drive:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/sjX2FT/fractal-design-case-fdcadefr5bk

Personally, I think internal optical drives are a waste of money these days. They are so rarely used. I prefer to just have a USB optical drive. It opens up many more options for more interesting PC cases and allows for greater flexibility. You can move a single USB DVD drive across multiple machines, as well as laptops that do not have an optical drive. For most people, that is more than good enough since they don't use an optical drive more than a couple times a year:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ODDE33U/

TL;DR: You can either switch the case or buy a USB DVD drive

Thank you for the gold!

u/Abraham_Sapien · 2 pointsr/BlackPeopleTwitter
u/sevin8nin · 2 pointsr/computers

Ok, well, if you have a network, there's no need to directly connect them with a crossover cable. If they can both be on the LAN simultaneously you can share the drive like this:

https://www.howtogeek.com/114254/how-to-share-cd-dvd-drives-over-the-network-on-windows/

And as an aside, Windows Vista was EOL'd (End of Life) back in April of 2017. This means you're no longer receiving security patches, and software doesn't support it leading to problems in the future. I'd consider getting rid of that computer.
USB attached external DVD drives can also be had fairly inexpensively.

For Intel its either the i7 6700k/7700k ($300+) or the g4560 ($80). Everything in between go for Ryzen, as well as the $300+ category in some cases when you are doing content creation and need the extra cores/threads, and aren't just going for the highest FPS.

For your budget I would almost certainly go for the Ryzen series over the i5.

1.) So this CPU is most certainly better for pretty much everything. Gaming, streaming, content creation, future proofing, etc. Also the stock cooler it comes with is more than enough.

2.) The faster ram was the same price, also would recommend buying another stick sometime in the future when you can afford it.

3.) Added an SSD you can install your OS on. They're pretty much a necessity these days and make your PC feel so much faster.

4.) Get whichever 1050ti you want, I just added one that had an active price, it was not added to your total on your parts list.

5.) The case you picked was pure crap, not to be rude. Poor build quality, poor layout to build in, and poor airflow. I just threw a random one in there, and that fractal case is nice for the money. If you want to add a 3rd fan still, the ones installed are the Dynamic x2 GP-12

6.) You do not need anywhere close to 750 watts for your PSU. Gave you a newer cheaper one.

7.) Gave you the full retail version of windows 10, because from personal experience. If you swap out mobos due to it dying, or you just don't like it, or you decide to build a whole new computer, you will lose your key and have to buy another. The full retail version transfers to as many mobos/computers as you build. Well worth extra $ to me.

8.) You do not need a DVD drive if you are only buying it to install windows. You can buy the full retail version and use the USB to install it, or if you decide to keep the OEM copy you can make your own USB install stick with the Windows Media Creation Tool. Just google it, very easy. If for some reason you still need a DVD drive for a few programs, I highly recommend you buy an external one from LG or something similar. That way you can still do what you need to do without limiting your pick of PC cases etc.

9.) Unless you already have that monitor, get a 1920x1080 monitor instead, 1600x900 is super outdated.

10.) That mouse and keyboard is fine, but if you can spend a but more, these are better:

The case doesn't have any slots for internal optical drives, so getting an external one like this one would be your best bet.

Windows 10 can be purchased from Amazon and installed via USB drive, btw. I personally like using that option better than the CD.

u/dnyank1 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Happy to help! :D

If you're planning on one to install windows, you can do so with a USB thumb drive now! pretty easy using the microsoft media creation tool.

Most cases no longer come with a 5.25" bay for an optical drive, the q300L included. If you just want to use it now-and-then for random tasks, you can get an external drive like this and keep it stashed in a drawer. Bonus, you can use it with a laptop, too! https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Portable-External-GP65NB60/dp/B00ODDE33U/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=usb+dvd+burner&qid=1569903952&sr=8-4

If something you're doing requires physical media fairly often, you can change to a different case to use a standard DVD or Blu Ray drive like I've picked (there's only room for one in this case, but some offer multiple if you're archiving a collection of CDs or something)

Version 12.3.7

Version 12.2.16

Version 12.2.14

Version 11.0.7

These are all the versions of the official drivers for windows 10, they should work perfectly (granted your model truly is the gt-190, and not the 190S)

Also note, that if you want to install the drivers via the DVD, you can get a USB dvd player Amazon - 23 USD -- Ebay - 13 USD.

For optical drive, go buy a USB optical drive.

Just a tad over budget but you can easily bring it down to $1400 if you feel like it by going with an i5 for $200. And I have the optical drive needed to install windows, etc. With this GPU you should be more than good for now and the near future. glhf!

u/Reidpines · 1 pointr/buildmeapc

I'm looking at this build. if someone doesn't mind, could someone answer a couple questions?

I have a budget of 700. What would you guys do to make this build run better with the extra 150$.

also i want a disc drive. is there anything i need to know about picking one?
I was looking at this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MOUBYDQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3NZU4CU5W041E
just because it's the cheapest.

I have never built a pc before.
I don't know what would be the most worth while, should I buy a second DDR4 memory Stick, for 16GB?
or should i just upgrade to I5-6500 Processor?
or both? what would you guys do?

EDIT: also, another stupid question. Firstly can i add a HDD to this build/case later? and when I do, given I only store personal files (Movies, photos, videos,) will having all of this slow down a video game while I'm playing it?
also, given there is only 240GB of storage on the solid state. how much roughly will the OS and such take up? essentially how much GB of room for Games will i have? would it be wise to invest in a larger one?

u/Redditenmo · 1 pointr/buildapc

I've been referring to the Asus board that you included in your opening build, the MSI is the one I linked in my first comment.

>Also on the storage is that a decent M2? Not overly sure what I'm looking for on that.

The Samsung 970 is a top tier SSD, but there's very little separating any of the top nvme drives from each other, not enough that I'd focus on anything more than price:capacity & warranty.

>And finally the RAM I selected, it seems like a really solid deal, $150 for 32GB's at 3600

It's absolutely a good price, the only reason to downgrade to 16GB is to save some money if it's unlikely that you'll use 16GB in the first place. (If you're a gamer 16GB is enough) but given you use an optical drive, perhaps you've got workloads that consume more ram, you're better placed to know than me.

If an external optical drive does work for you & you are looking to cut costs without sacrificing performance / cooling : I'd do the following :

  1. mobo changed to save money (no sacrifices to performance or features)
  2. Downgraded to 16GB of ram, spent a little bit extra on black dimms with RGB (If you think 16GB of ram is insufficient, stick with your 32gb kit)

If you're looking for something compact, check out the Zotac EN1070. $1200 barebones:

BYO OS (ex. Win10, just install it from a USB stick, which you can setup from Microsoft), RAM (up to 32 gigs), and HDD (either an M.2 NVMe or a 2.5" SSD/HDD, or both). I have one in my living room right now & it's great, very compact & quiet. They do make a beefier model with a better GPU (EN1080K) & faster CPU (i7 instead of an i5), but that starts at $1900 barebones (it is also liquid-cooled from the factory). If you really want an optical drive, they have a USB slim Bluray drive (CD/DVD/Bluray) for $89 here:

Legal playback of Bluray discs on Windows is kind of a mess. I like the MacGo player the best: ($60, but there's always $30 off coupons & stuff floating around)

http://www.macblurayplayer.com/windows-bluray-player.htm

As far as a keyboard goes, I like Logitech K400. It's compact, it's wireless, it's cheap ($40, but usually on sale for less than $30), and has a touchpad built-in, so you don't necessarily need your wireless mouse at all times:

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-920-007119-Wireless-Keyboard-Connected/dp/B014EUQOGK/

They used to sell a special couch mouse called the M515, although I believe Logitech's only current offering on a multi-surface mouse (like a fuzzy chair arm) is the Anywhere MX 2 for $55: (or the larger MX Master for $70)

I did approximately 80 blu rays so far. Also ripped about 200 other discs DVD movies and tv with it. Zero hiccups.

I started out with makeMKV but went away from it after I had issues with ripping some blu rays. I ended up purchasing a DVD/blu ray license of Leawo ripper : https://www.leawo.com/pro/dvd-ripper.html. It works very well, and you can manipulate the DVD while ripping. Leawo will do MKV files as well as other formats.

Be aware that some makeMKV binaries contain a back door trojan thing. The first one I downloaded had this.

Yes, the graphics card is only for visually-intensive tasks, like gaming and video-editing. Even then, the integrated graphics (Intel HD 530) is one of the most powerful around. One thing I forgot to include, you'll need to install Windows 10 via USB or external USB optical drive, as the case doesn't support an in-built optical drive. However, you kind find high-quality inexpensive USB optical-drive like this one. Let me know if you need any more help, and I hope you and your aunt enjoy the build!

> What are the perks of overclocking?

Overclocking is essentially a way to improve your system performance by running certain components (especially the CPU and GPU) at frequencies above their default specifications. For gaming, this essentially translates to higher frame rates.

Although it can significantly improve performance, it also has some drawbacks: It usually requires more expensive components, the components will output more heat and take more power, it requires some research to learn how to do it, etc.

Personally, I have never really felt the need to overclock, although I have messed around with it on my GPU a bit. It's by no means necessary and you can get a very high end PC (as you would be) without doing it.

> What good is an optical drive?

Optical drives are kind of becoming obsolete because of online distribution. Probably the biggest use now is just the initial installation of the OS (although it is possible to do that without an optical drive, just slightly less straightforward).

They can still be useful if you have a specific reason. I have an old one in my PC that was useful to rip my CD collection and install my OS, but it doesn't see too much use anymore. One good option IMO is to just get an external USB optical drive like this and then you can share that between all your devices.

> What OS do you suggest?

Based on your component choices I'm assuming this is (at least partly) for gaming. In that case you will definitely want to get Windows, as the majority of PC games are only available on Windows. I would recommend Windows 10 simply because it's the latest version of Windows and the older ones will be losing support at some point. You will probably want the home version; the pro version has some more features but they are probably not important to you.

Windows 10 has some annoyances to it, but once you get it working the way you want it's very nice. For my preferences, I've been able to get it to look and behave very similarly to Windows 7 (but faster!) and I've turned off most of Microsoft's data collection and advertisement stuff.

u/Technical_Estate · 1 pointr/homelab

Not sure what the policy is on posting retail stuff, but just FYI: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B00ODDE33U you can get USB disc burners that double as Cd readers. Might be worth looking into.

u/LifeBeyondLiving · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

Ryzen 5 at the moment outclasses the i5 lineup by a large margin, so until Intel can either outclock or outcore the Ryzen 5s, there's no reason to buy them, even for gaming. An SSD wil help your boot times way more than you think, and with this kind of budget, you're really wasting potential if you don't get one. The motherboard is changed because the board you had was an LGA1151 board, which doesn't support AMD's AM4 socket CPUs, like the 1600. Motherboards all have built-in wifi that is pretty good now, and some cat5 cable to hardwire yourself into the router if you can would be cheaper and way better than a wifi card if speed is a major concern. An optical drive isn't really needed in builds anymore, but if you really need one, this is only slightly more.

If you really want an i5 build for $1000 with no ssd, you can get this which will have way better performance than a locked CPU and 1060.

  • I say stick with the 7700k if you have the money, it might be overkill but also may buy you another year or two before needing to upgrade again.
  • Not sure how much you want to spend but the Asus z270E is usually only $20 more and has built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.
  • I'd drop the CD Writer. You really won't need it. If you do find you need a CD writer then just purchase an external like this.
  • Also, for another $20 or so you could get an AIO watercooler like the Corsair H100i V2 or the Thermaltake Water 3.0 which will help you take advantage of overclocking that 7700k. I also think they are easier to install in their own way.

Micro Center has great deals on processors and mobos with an automatic $30 off for matching cpu to mobo. Good luck building!

If you ordered an ibuypower computer and it came without a DVD drive, then its highly likely the system does not have a spot for it.

In which case you would need to get a USB drive.

Something like this

u/GeorgeMKane · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

Upgraded the CPU cooler, because I changed the case to something that I think will work out better for you (especially cable management wise, and overall airflow). You can get the 970 EVO for much less, and with that I also upgraded the motherboard to a much better one. I just dropped 1TB from the HDD, but it's still the same Toshiba X300.

For the CD drive, I do recommend external, as you probably won't be using it as much as people did before. More and more, I'm finding people go with external cd drives, and they're better off overall, because they can get better components for the tower.

A few recommendations... LG GP65NB60 | ASUS ZenDrive (USB-C)

(The case I recommended has a USB-C front panel port)

Ah, I see. That CD likely contains the best driver for your device. If you can find the CD, definitely do.

Even though you don’t have a CD drive on your computer, you can get an external USB DVD adapter like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ODDE33U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_t9KRCbB1XA3SM which are usually plug and play so no worries like you’re dealing with with this thing.

Interesting that it shows up as Line In. When you go into Sounds, do you see it listed in the sounds? Right click the volume icon on the lower right hand corner of your computer in the Taskbar, select Sounds, and then go over to the tab for Playback and also Recording.

Is it listed on any of these tabs? And if so, does it have a green check mark on it? Is your guitar plugged in to the adapter and does it seem to be recognizing sound coming from the adapter and showing up on the bar when you strum the guitar?

u/TransientSilence · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Yeah, I have this one. It's a handy thing to have around if you ever need to use it. Just plug and play.

u/Talks_To_Cats · 1 pointr/buildapc

I use this one and haven't run into any problems.

I'm currently running on a Mac, and am building a new PC for the first time. My new case doesn't support dvd drives, and I was thinking of buying an external DVD drive in order to download windows on to.

Would this work out well for a fresh CD installation?

So there is not a lot of cases that have a Optical drive bay, so it’s better to just buy an external one for around $120, so total is around $2600 AUD

Thanks for your recommendation. Is there a noticable difference in performance between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 when it comes to DVD players?

There are some nuances to this. It is misleading to say that using VLC breaks any law in any particular country. This article explains it well:

I mean, you could preorder it, then if it is a disc, go on amazon and just order a $30 USB optical drive Like this one

u/cctvcctvcctv · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hello friends,

I recently upgraded to 5.1 surround sound and now must find some surround sound encoded music.

A buddy hooked me up with a rip from DSOTM and it sounds amazing. I see numerous other albums are available in SACD or DVD-A format. I have a few questions:

  • Are there any legit websites that sell digital copies of the surround sound albums?

  • If answer to above is no, I would need to either buy a disc player to plug into my AVR or a CD drive to rip to my PC, correct? Unfortunately the only laptop that I had with a CD drive has died.

  • Can any external CD drive from Amazon work for ripping SACD's or DVD-A's? See for example this: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-DW316-External-Optical-429-AAUX/dp/B00VWVZ0V0/
u/SiriusGD · 1 pointr/laptops

Most laptops don't have DVD drives anymore. I had to buy an external one on Amazon. I got a Dell for around $30.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VWVZ0V0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

At first I bought a slightly cheaper no-name Chinese one but I had to return it because it was crap.

As far as being mobile. I have a nice laptop bag that I not only carry my laptop in but also my cooling platform, an external keyboard, a mouse pad, a mouse, my power cable, an external high capacity HDD (5 TB) with all my movies, sometimes my gaming controller and sometimes my external DVD drive.

It's all still very much portable.

u/archover · 1 pointr/Ubuntu

I bought a USB Dell USB DVD Drive-DW316 which has served me well. Of course, you can use it portable. Evidently, will not write to a blueray but will play it. Can't test since I don't have not blueray disks.

u/Fantastic_Associate · 1 pointr/NeonGenesisEvangelion

If you're fine with renting them, you could sign up for a single month of Netflix's DVD rental service for under $10, and get an external DVD drive for $14 from Amazon.

First...

https://support.toshiba.com/support/viewContentDetail?soid=403623

If that doesn't help...

Unless our Windows XP VM has the same virtual hw as your laptop (CPU, disk etc) I'd think Windows would complain the same as it does if you take the windows installed hard disk out of one machine and put it in another that is different in its hardware and refuse to boot.

Have you tried something like:

https://wintoflash.com/home/en/

or

https://download.cnet.com/WinToUSB/3000-18513_4-76061723.html

or pay $14 and buy one of these USB connected external CD/DVD players that support Win7, XP etc

u/Rex_Mortalium · 1 pointr/techsupport

To me it sounds like your drive is defective, sorry.

Last ditch effort would be to remove all the drivers again and perform a clean install. If that doesn't help you should send it in and get it replaced.

To help out your problem, if you order an external usb dvd drive from amazon today it should arrive until tomorrow. They aren't very expensive, here is a good one http://www.amazon.com/External-Windows98-Notebook-Dustproof-Scratch-Resistant/dp/B00X7DH5GE/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1449246710&sr=8-8&keywords=usb+dvd+drive

They really wont except it on a usb drive? thats crazy.

Try Staples. They have a copy and print center and Sell blank CD's, they should be able to hook you up.

If all else fails you can purchase a USB CD drive to attach to a laptop or PC like this one: https://www.amazon.com/External-Gipow-Transfer-Rewriter-Desktops/dp/B072M9LY99/ref=zg_bs_1292112011_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=NTPC9JJBNWHVZDDKZR6H

u/Skoolz · 1 pointr/pcgamingtechsupport

Did the DVD come with a steam key? If so, you're probably in luck and don't have to ever use the disc. This is common nowadays.

Otherwise, you will have to buy a new key or get a DVD usb drive.

u/KledMosby · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

u/captain_hotbeef · 1 pointr/htpc

I guess it is the nomenclature that wasn't clear to me. Is it a stand alone "external" player like this :

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-BD-F5700-Wi-Fi-Blu-Ray-Player/dp/B00EUY59Z8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418940758&sr=8-1&keywords=blu-ray+player

or something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Blu-Ray-Player-External-Laptop-Burner/dp/B001TVAU0E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418940822&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+blu-ray+player&pebp=1418940825017

I would consider both of those to be "external" vs a traditional mount in a case internal drive. My own personal solution was to get a USB Blu-Ray drive, rip a disc to Mkv, and then watch it from either VLC or Kodi and never worry about paying for Cyberlink or AnyDVD. Just delete the mkv when you are done if it is a rental.

u/AmznTaxHelp · 1 pointr/buildapc

Ooo glad I asked! lol Definitely want to read and write!

So would this external drive work?

It looks like it has good reviews and a good price. Also I realized that since I wont be using it often, it doesn't need to be internal.

Or should I pay up for this one?

Thanks for all the help!

u/watusa · 1 pointr/pchelp
u/Enignite · 1 pointr/hardware

/r/SuggestALaptop but the thermal paste probably isn't worth it, have no idea if the display would be worth it and 8x1GB RAM is about $50 if you wanted to add it yourself. OS/Programs on SSD and HDD as mass storage, but to do that you would need to use an mSATA + HDD or drop the optical bay for room to have both SSD + HDD. If you go that route and still want an optical drive then USB Blu-Ray players can be as low as $35, DVD Players a bit cheaper (Blu-Rays are still a pita on PC as well, either need to strip DRM or buy a program to play them)

u/rod156 · 1 pointr/techsupport

You can find external DVD drives for cheap (about $30) on your local store or on the internet, and if you want Blu-Ray functionality, you can get one like this.

In terms of the SSD, the location should not matter since the cable distance has very, very little effect on the speed. You should also notice faster speeds, even on SATA2.

u/inglorioustoast · 1 pointr/battlestations
u/ropers · 1 pointr/techsupport

Thank you for this information. :) In that case, things should be grand. However, the OP may want to shop around. Cursory googling revealed that some places sell the relevant adapters for more than the cost of a DVD drive. I guess it's still fine if your primary concern is avoiding waste, but not so great if you want to do this to save money.

u/sinred · 1 pointr/buildapc

> keyboard sound horrible

  • If you are hearing the clickity sounds of keys, get a mechanical keyboard with red, black or brown switches.
  • if you hear static sounds try plugging the adapter to a different port, uninstalling headphone drivers and restarting the pc or disabling the rgb or reinstalling the rgb management software(if you have any)

    >I don’t care about quality as long as the notes sound like the notes they are

Any cheap headphone is way better than small speakers. Notes won't sound like the notes they are with cheap speakers. Use your headphones and connect your organ to the pc via a midi to usb. There are plenty of guides for that last scenario.

    > just preferably white

White drives went extinct way before dvd drives went extinct. :D Almost everyone stopped using white colored drives when black drives arrived since black drives look black and clean even after few years while white drives became beige or off-white. This is a good drive, its black though. I couldn't find a white drive.

First timer here (again). If I order a dvd burner like THIS for my new build, will the data cable for it come with the drive or the mobo, and likewise will the power cable come with the drive or the psu? What about the two storage devices, will i have cables for those in either the storage device packaging or the mobo box?

I'll post my build again for reference; all parts should be here this weekend.

Not sure if you need peripherals or not, so that will be a huge factor influencing overall price. Assuming you will reuse your current keyboard, mouse, and monitor, here is a setup for your price range.

Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 ($55)

PSU: Corsair 650TX V2 ($85)

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V LK ($148)

CPU: Intel i5-3570K ($230)

RAM: 8GB GSkill DDR3 12800 ($53)

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB ($103)

GPU: EVGA GTX 560 ($192)

DVD: ASUS 24x SATA DVD-RW ($22)

Total = $888

You can look to upgrade your Motherboard, CPU, or Graphics Card as your budget allows. You can also look to pick up a solid state HDD, which is faster but with less space, to store your operating system and favorite game.

This looks like a really solid build.

I would however recomend air cooling instead of water cooling, water cooling can be tricky to put together and it's not a whole lot better, plus it's more expensive. I recomend the ''Hyper 212 EVO'', It's the most efficent cooler for the money out there, it's only 35$ and keeps my I7-4790K around 70 degrees while overclocked to 4.7Ghz.

Also, I don't know about you, but if you want to be able to put dvd's and such into your pc, which can be really helpful for installing drivers and such, you shouldn't forget the optical drive, they are only 20$!

Other than that this looks like a really strong build, will max out almost everything, if you want more storage I would recommend the 4 Tb Western Digital Green, the green is twice as cheap as the black and sees almost no difference, (in my opinion). 750GB won't last forever, and if you want to be comfortable being able to record and download how much you want, mass storage can be a good thing.

FWIW you can get a name brand drive for about the same money. Don't need USB 3.0 for CD/DVD - the 2.0 interface is more than twice as fast as 16x DVD. I think these no-name folks that are spammed all over Amazon are kind of taking advantage of people searching only for USB 3.0 drives.

So I would probably get something like this, or this.

I just got an ASUS external DVD burner(?) off of my friend (so no manual or anything). I mostly wanted it because my computer (laptop, HP Elitebook) doesn't have a DVD drive so I can't watch the 5689439 DVD's I have at home. Anyway, I plugged it into my computer, and the first thing is installing the device driver. Fine. Then I need to restart my computer in order to finish installing. I'm like whatever I just wanna watch movies. So when my computer restarts, it takes me to the thing where you have to select which driver you want to use, either Windows 7 or this new Daimon(not sure if right name) thing. So I'm like whatever press it, get it done. I get half way through the guided install, and it tells me that it needs to wipe my entire hard drive to use it. I checked, and it's telling me this thing only takes up 37mb. Why does it need my whole drive? So I stop the install halfway through. Restart computer. Uninstall the driver (because now every time I start computer it asks me which one to use, Win7 or the new one).

It made my computer fuck up, I had to reset and wipe my drives because it kept doing disk checks after all of this and wouldn't stay on for more than 2min without blue screen. fml I just wanted to watch movies!

TLDR; Why does this device need to wipe my entire drive to use it? What happened to my computer? I already lost everything, but is there a way to use this device without using an entire drive? Why did it have to open the installer through that method? Can't I just plug this thing in and watch a friggin movie? Is there something like this that is just an external DVD player for a laptop?

Sorry for being so long, can't find anything on Google about this, everyone seems to know what they're doing here and obviously I'm.. slow..

Many larger public libraries will allow account holders to check out an external USB-driven CD/DVD player; with it you can make a Linux OS ISO. I've done over 30 Linux OS installs on laptops & PC's, and I've never (yet) used a USB stick. I prefer the CD method; systems easily recognize it, and often better than a formatted USB stick. And, you can buy one for $18 . I bought my Asus Drive plus a pack of DVD's in 2011 and I'm still using them. But you can just buy the OS DVD's.

I got this (I ended up paying full price). It works really well, can read just about any disc I throw at it. according to this it works with Linux. Note: I have not tried this myself, however, I have played a blu-ray disk on windows with vlc and this player, and libaac, which is basically the only way you can play it on Linux other than ripping using MakeMkv. So I am pretty sure it will work.

> Actually, ramping up to 16x is instantaneous, because the drives EXIST NOW.

Which of them ramp up instantly? The only drive I've ever used take time to spin up. Unlike HDDs these things aren't constantly spinning at a single speed. They take a moment to reach the max speed, especially when 16x is pretty much the absolute max speed you'll ever get from these discs.

For the sake of this argument I'm going to ignore the fact that there are no slimline drives that would operate at 16x (you need full rate for such crazy speeds).

I'm not going to ignore that the drive would probably sound like a jet engine. You need something like 10,000RPM to get 12x reads at the edge of the disc! I'm sure that, given your knowledge about these drives, you know how loud they get when spinning at full speed.

I'm also dubious of any drive saying it can perform over 12x consistently. Pushing from 12x to 16x is really pushing the physical limitations of the discs themselves. Even if the drives can do it under optimal performance, I see the dics themselves causing issues. I'm not saying it can't happen, but that there are so many issues involving it that I see it not happening most of the time.

> The vast majority of console users are NOT switching to SSDs, and changing it on the XB1 vids your warranty. This point is rather irrelevant.

This point was about referencing that PC is already trying to move to low seek times, so sticking with slow seek times seems like a backwards step.

> Why would the streaming be magical? The tech exists already, developers used it all the time on previous consoles-streaming tech is not arbitrarily limited to a certain speed.

You're going to have to actually explain what you mean by streaming now. I had assumed you were referring to some smart way to extract continuous data from a disc in order to avoid seek times. But it doesn't sound like that's what you're on about. I have no idea what you are on about...

> Yes, random read times are still an issue, but they're not a critical issue preventing the game from being played.

They are a critical issue involving load times. Load times are basically the single most annoying thing to a gamer. It's pretty much the entire reason the PC community has moved towards SSDs.

Oblivion actually duplicated data on their discs in order to attempt to lower this issue, that's how bad it is.

On a random 6x drive I found the average seek time to be 350ms! Even at 16x you're looking at a minimum of 130ms seek time (and it's unlikely to be a linear decrease, in truth it's unlikely to decrease all that much at all).

That's compared to the sub 9ms seek times of a HDD.

That difference is massive. Ridiculously massive. I can't even imagine trying to load a game like GTA or Skyrim from a bluray disc if the data isn't all perfectly in the right location. It would be absolutely horrible.

I got an SSD in my PC entirely due to Skyrim load times. That's 9ms to 0.1ms seek times. And you want to go up to 300ms!

Seek times are the single most important aspect of how long a game takes to load nowadays. It's not the speed it can read a continual block (though that makes a difference in open world games), it's the seek times.

To ignore those would be ignoring the the entire reason (beyond the crazy sound levels of a 16x blu-ray, increased cost, and larger form factor) that we install games right now.

  1. A much more reliable hard drive. Seagate is notorious for their drives failing after a year or two. I have two Western Digital hard drives that are still running very strong, even after a year and a half.

  2. The R9 280X is a solid card and runs most games at ultra to high settings at 1080p. This is the Gigabyte version, so the cooler performs really well.

The stock cooler works if you don't intend on overclocking. For the optical drive, I originally planned to use a flash drive to put windows on my build, but after seeing how cheap optical drives are, it doesn't hurt to have one. NZXT H440 doesn't have space for an optical drive so I bought this one. Depending on the case you might need an external one.

u/questionable-morels · 1 pointr/Tech_Support

Short answer, it's not worth it.
You'll also need to power it which would be a PITA if the drive is outside the case. You could buy a cable like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005B3VO24/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_uXQ6xbYRC1SKZ
but for a similar price you could buy a USB DVD drive on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C2AMK2M/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_WYQ6xbG4VMNQM Just go with one of those if necessary.

The good news is that the discs that came with the hardware are obsolete and the updated software is available for download on their sites.

The bad news is some software, depending on the vendor, must be installed from the included disc because they do not offer a replacement on their site (to minimize how many people who don't own compatible hardware try using it). Creative and Canon with their DSLR's are two examples where proprietary software is exclusive to their included media and the website merely offers patches.

Also, your OS is downloadable and can be very easily installed to a USB drive of 8GB minimum capacity (it will be formatted to FAT32)

Did you watch the video demonstrating the M-Disk media durability?. http://youtu.be/CfBEHlzvZnc Sure, a DVD is excessive to store a small wallet.dat file, but its pretty inexpensive when you consider its a total cost of $60, $30 burner http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Portable-External-GP60NB50/dp/B00C2AMK2M/ plus $30 for 10 blank m-discs http://www.amazon.com/M-DISC-4-7GB-Permanent-Archival-Backup/dp/B005Y4NKE0/ If your ultimate goal would be for a family member who gets this DVD from safety deposit box to be able to retrieve the bitcoins, encrypt the wallet.dat w/ the built in pass phrase encryption found in the core bitcoin wallet, and possibly fill the rest of the DVD with a few thousand family photos to use up the rest of the space. You could have the pass phrase stored separately in a completely different document w/ a trusted 3rd party, or the family lawyer. Maybe you could hide the pass phrase deep within the family photos in a picture. It all depends how difficult you want the process to be to retrieve the coins, and how many secrets need to be combined to access them. Be creative, write clear instructions on how to access the bitcoins on the DVD with the wallet.dat, include bitcoin software, but don't be so clear about the password, or even that there is a password in the instructions with the wallet.dat file.. Have that be separated somehow if that is a concern.. but don't be so tricky that no one in the family is ever able to get the coins either.

Yes, after some thought, I think I'll purchase an external.

I'm looking at this LG drive, and reviews I've read on American Amazon say it can play DVDs off of one USB port. This is fine, since I don't really intend to burn my DVDs :)

In case the included cable is too short -- I'm thinking of purchasing this cable to power the drive. The webpage says it's meant to power external hard drives, but it should be able to power external optical drives, maybe. Do you think that could work?

I'd like a long cable, because the desk I have has a second lower tray for a keyboard, and I can just place the DVD player on the lower tray if the cable's long enough.

  1. Go for a different Card. you don't need all that money spent on a card for basic web browsing.I got my parents a radeon 240 but after multiple dead on arrival cards, I ended up getting them this MSI Geforce 210, which works great at 1920x1080, and even does some pretty good cs:go results on a similar, low cost build. It's only about $40, but works just fine for those purposes- web browsing, video, and probably is about equal to intel iris graphics, which I use as a daily driver for my macbook, and it works great on lots of stuff.

  2. Maybe get 2x4gb ram (it'd be cheaper than 1x8gb), and you can also dual-channel it.

  3. Storage- maybe consider spending a few extra dollars today for a 1tb, it's not that much more expensive, and it's better to have it and not need it than need it and then substitute speed for performance. You could also consider getting a 64gb ssd for os and programs, etc.

  4. Consider getting windows 8, it's a bit cheaper, and windows 10 is just around the corner. link to price/buy

  5. Optical- This guy hasn't failed me in the few months i've had it, and you can also plug it in to other places. Not sure about booting to install windows, but it should be fine.

Is this a desktop or laptop? If it's a desktop a new drive costs $13-$20 and is easy to replace yourself. If it's a laptop, the ones I've seen run closer to $50+. Another option is just to get one of these external DVD drives if you don't mind it not being inside the PC itself.

If you don't want to replace it yourself I'd recommend the external option since it'll be much cheaper.

If replacing the DVD drive is a hassle, there is also the option of purchasing an external DVD drive. One that's around $20-30 should be capable of burning discs and should be available at nearby stores. Best Buy in-store may also match the price from Amazon for this exact model, which they usually have in stock in most stores.

LG External DVD Drive - Amazon

It is also a good investment for the future when you may need a DVD drive in any computer that doesn't even have one built in.

Getting an external drive would be my preference than worrying about the internal drive, anyway. The internal would be just another component to cause potential issues in the future and suck up a few more watts of energy.

u/cyberdude1115 · 1 pointr/gaming

Try this maybe

u/TimeTravellerSmith · 1 pointr/suggestapc

Strictly speaking there's nothing wrong with using a "gaming" desktop as opposed to an "office" desktop. The key thing with gaming computers is the presence of a dedicated graphics card...which you would find pretty useless.

So comparing these two machines the Avatar would have slightly better graphics performance since it's got the GPU, however the Dell actually has the superior CPU in it which is what you're going to care about. That and if it's something that customers might see it probably looks a little more professional than a gaming computer.

If you want to save a little more money, and those are more or less the most demanding things you're going to do with it I'd recommend something like this:

Dell Inspiron i3 8GB RAM

Main difference there is the CPU, which is an i3. However it's more than capable of doing office grunt.

This Inspiron is even less, with a two sacrifices. It's only got 4GB of RAM, which means that if you're the kind of person to have tons of programs running at the same time might give you some headaches. It also doesn't have a disk drive, which could be a problem for some. Nice thing at least is that external drives are cheap, and easy to use for the few times that you might need it.

I'd say overall the i5 is a little overkill unless you're really crunching a lot of stuff at the same time. So the i3 8GB model is probably your best choice, and it's a bit cheaper than the Avatar and the i5 model.

If you're feeling savvy you could try to look into the slim Inspiron model and just buy your own RAM to stick in it. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get in there though.

u/FuckTheAdmins · 1 pointr/mac

My main used to be a mid-09 13 inch MBP. The optical drive died on me about 2 years in so I replaced it with a SSD. I managed to go another 2 years before buying an external disc burner since I'm into music production.

I just upgraded to the mid-14 MBP (15 inch! Upgrade!) We'll see how much I'll miss the CD drive when I head back to school in the fall, but honestly I don't know if I even know where the disc drive is right now. I can honestly count on my hands how many times I've needed it. Most of those are (like you mentioned) renting movies from the library since school monitors network traffic.

As always YMMV but I think the retina display plus killer battery life in a package that's thinner and lighter than the 13 inch machine it replaces are worthy trade-offs.

u/CalvinbyHobbes · 1 pointr/technology

>Who needs/uses a DVD drive anymore?

Most people do, dvd's are still the preferred method of watching a movie because buying on iTunes would mean DRM and Netflix requires a fast Internet.

> If not an external DVD drive is $13.

Where? A SuperDrive is 8x DVDA±R DL/ 6x DVDA±R DL / 6x DVDA±RW/ 24x CD-R / 16x CD-RW, I don't think you can find something with the exact specifications for 13 bucks, I say you need to shell out at least $30 for something similar.

>Not really. Playing your stuff right on the computer without needing some antiquated form of media "just works".

This is where you got it wrong because CDs aren't some antiquated form of media, they're still the safest and most durable way of storing data, only beaten by tape, so neither tape or cd is antiquated nor will they be antiquated until we come up with a better way to store data.

>As for the iMac yeah it looks pretty, and all it costed was the loss of a component that sees little if any use. If you really need it, again an external is cheap as hell and is not as much of a hindrance if you are using it on a desktop. If that is not enough get something else. You have choices. There are other computers.

This is complete fanboy talk. Instead of critiquing apple or being more critical of them you go "Well you don't have to use apple!" which is a mindset I'll never understand, why would anyone defend a company so vehemently? And it's not like Im bashing on apple either I'm just stating a matter of fact, they prefer form over function. And there a plethora of evidence to support that statement.

I have this: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SE-506CB-RSBD-Blu-ray-External/dp/B00JJGFRIQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414634827&sr=8-1&keywords=external+blu+ray

That is the main one that I use here on my desktop and laptop, if you don't care about portability or size I would recommend a full sized drive as it will be faster. I have the one shown above, one pulled from a laptop and a full 5.25" in an external enclosure and the 5.25" drive is significantly faster.

u/mcKempt · 1 pointr/buildapc

You could get an external like this one if you want to use BluRay disks. If not, you can just mount the BluRay player to a SATA port on the mobo just for the install and then remove it.

Or I can look at those other cases, if you want a permanent drive that's attached to the case.

I got Brix, which is similar to NUC (but from Gigabyte instead of Intel). It has Intel i5, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD. It runs Windows 7 and XBMC. 1080p BluRay runs flawlessly. Very fast boot time (few seconds from start to play). I stream through LAN from my server. If you want BluRay drive, you can easily attach it to that setup (it has 4 USB3.0 connections), they cost about $80 at Amazon.

I'm no pro. I don't know much about specs, and I'm not an audio/videophile necessarily. I just like something basic, uncomplicated, that works, while not sacrificing on audio/video quality in big ways. I always rip and store my own media to stream to any decide in my house, and stream lightly on both paid and unpaid services. My basic setup meets all my needs with no issues whatsoever.

I have this basic box from Amazon. I popped a small solid-state hard drive, 4GB memory, and Windows OS onto it, hooked it up by ethernet to my internet connection, and have it hooked up to my 3TB external drive. I stream my local media from this box to any other device in the house running Kodi via UPNP or SMB. I have a modest Samsung external Blu-ray burner for ripping.

This meets all my needs completely, and the basic box and accessories ran me a few hundred bucks. You may have some parts lying around you can use.

u/GreatSchnide · 1 pointr/mac

Thanks for the response. Considering the cost of the adapter that you linked, would it not make more sense to pay a little more and go for a much smaller external USB blu ray drive? There were a few on Amazon going pretty cheap.

What do you think?

u/chopdok · 1 pointr/buildapc

External optical drives are cheap and available, work on anything that has USB 2.0/3.0. Except for optical drives, there is no use whatsoever for 5.25. You can get CD/DVD burner and Blue-Ray reader combo, for 40$, then you have solution for every possible situation.

I guess try this one? The reviews are okay... If it doesn't work then you can send it back... https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KR8VYJG/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

P.s I didnt forget about your requirements but if you really want to have an optical drive however thise case would be better but it ruins the aesthetic as far as a monitor goes for now just use a tv
And get a wireless keyboard and mouse for $20 on bestbuy or Amazon

As far as a ssd goes i would say not now just get a 1tb hdd and be done. It wouldn't make a ton of sense to sacrifice one of the other parts for a ssd it just isnt in the realm of this particular budget.

u/dorel · 1 pointr/DataHoarder

Plextor and Teac used to be the best. Plextor PX-891SAF is $30 on Amazon. Sony and LG should also be pretty good and even cheaper, $18 will be enough.

You did say that you won't be overclocking, but not having the option to overclock is a bit absurd at this budget so I included it anyway.

It fits all of your specifications - your desired case, colour scheme, keyboard, SSD, (external) optical drive, powerline adapter and monitors.

You can expect very smooth FPS at ultra settings for pretty much any game out there on 1080p resolution. You also have the option to SLI in the future, though I wouldn't upgrade your monitors' resolutions to any higher than 1440p since you will experience microstutters once you start using more than 3.5GB of VRAM.

  • Hello! We would be happy to answer your question

  • First Solution Many old macbooks are for sale on ebay, craigslist, etc. and they all come with CD drives in them. You can find some here.

  • Second Solution Buy a chromebook, and attach a external optical drive to it. If you aren't a fan of the orchestral roar of last-gen macbooks, buy a cheap Chromebook for 200-300 bucks, and then buy a external optical, or CD drive here

Should have just bought this instead. Then you could rip UHD discs too.

Pretty much the lowest you're gonna go unless you buy used parts is a

  • GTX 1050 2GB

  • Gigabyte Mobo (This is micro ATX, you're gonna have to fork over a little more if you want full ATX)

  • RAM - DDR3 8GB sticks, couldn't find a decent one in a quick search under 50 but I purchased mine for $35

  • PSU DO NOT skimp on the part of your computer that provides power to everything. This thing explodes? So does your computer.

  • here's a micro-atx case, for the motherboard i mentioned

  • and here is your ODD.

    want internet?
  • Here is an internet stick. Otherwise use ethernet with a handy cable.

Buy an external optical drive so you don’t have to put one into your pc. It’s also a lot easier and cheaper. Here’s the link to an LG one on amazon https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Portable-External-GP65NB60/dp/B00ODDE33U

The fact that a SSD costs $50 instead of $80 doesn't invalidate my point, my point is that a good DVD-ROM costs a LOT LESS than a SSD.

I'm not entirely sure why you think $46 is the cost of a DVD-RW drive, Since most good DVD-RW drives are available for half of that price.

A lot of people are suggesting you build a pc, and I suggest you to build one too! My previous PC Build was good enough to run iRacing and, Including a BenQ monitor, cost around the £600 mark. I'll post my specs however some of the parts may be discontinued so I'll try and source similar components if they are.

Let me know if want any of the peripherals(Keyboard/Mouse etc) aswell

Total Cost = ~£543

You might be able to find components cheaper on different websites, especially American based ones(NewEgg).

As for assembly, I followed a tutorial from popular Battlefield YouTuber, JackFrags. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WQxr59KRto He uses old components but the build is more or less the same than the specs above.

You also may want to upgrade the Graphics Card, RAM or CPU. I recently upgraded the 750Ti to a 1060 3GB, FX 6300 to a FX 8350 and RAM by an extra 8GB. Remember, if you do upgrade anything like this, you will most likely need a bigger PSU.

Have fun building :P

Edit: As Raptord put, you should also think about getting a Ryzen CPU. But keep in mind, you would need to get a different motherboard as Ryzen uses an alternative socket to AM3+
