Not op, but I also went from 280 down to my current weight in the 170's over a similar time span.

What worked best for me was replacing either breakfast or lunch with a protein shake (with added fiber to help feel full) and counting calories.
Weight loss is largely controlled by nutrition. My suggestion for anyone looking to change their lifestyle is to download an app like lifesum or myfitnesspal and record your daily calorie intake. After the first 3-4 weeks your body is pretty well adjusted and it's habitual from there.

Edit: For those asking, I used BSN Syntha-6. I'm not a nutritionist. Idk what protein powder is best for you at the macronutritional level, but this is what I used based on reviews/price. I personally prefer vanilla for versatility with blending in fruit/yogurt/etc.

Pamela's pancake mix. Light fluffy pancakes every time. Also, redditors, don't give me crap about how easy it is to make pancake mix.

Raw Meal chocolate replacement meal. This is my breakfast everyday. I drink it with almond milk. Doesn't taste good with regular water. Whole Foods sells this for $50-60ish.

Tamanishiki Super Premium Short Grain Rice. Only applicable if you have a rice cooker. Best rice I've ever cooked. Maybe cheaper if you have an asian market near you. I do not, so I bought this. I bought this bag for $22 last time.

u/willyolio · 11 pointsr/Futurology

i'll be impressed if it goes well under $2 a meal. but for now... I still don't see much value over something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Organic-Chocolate-2-7lbs/dp/B007S6Y6VS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421646917&sr=8-1&keywords=raw+meal&pebp=1421646922177&peasin=B007S6Y6VS

It's basically $3 per day, plus a glass of milk, and whatever cheap carb you want (like a potato or bread) to top up the calories to your daily needs.

Soylent needs to drop to less than $2 per meal just to compete with existing products on the market. It's not particularly amazing in any other way, just another nutrition shake with extra calories dumped in (in the form of maltodextrin, which is a health concern in and of itself...)

Somewhere I can really show my expertise haha!

  • Best for baking: Any type of Quest Protein - works really well for brownies and muffins/other breadlike items (which are hard to do with protein)
  • Best for drinking: Chocolate PB or Chocolate Nutrabolics - doesn't have a weird aftertaste, doesn't get too creamy or tooooo watery (im picky)
  • Best for eating with yogurt/in stuff: Musclepharm Combat Cookies and Cream - so delicious. Mix with water + 1tbsp of PB2 and tastes just like ice cream!
  • Best with coffee: Dymatize Mint Chocolate - maybe its because i love a peppermint mocha but god this is a tasty combo

Protein I would never buy again:

  • Cellucor Cor-Fetti - IMO tastes terrible, doesn't mix well, sprinkles are more gross than cute
  • MuscleTech Phase8 - too sweet, turns water into a weird syrup, I could hardly stomach half a scoop

Honourable mention goes out to Jamie Eason Vanilla Chai flavoured protein, I can't find it anywhere, even Google is useless. I was once given 2 samples, they were life changing if you ever get the chance!
u/anachronic · 9 pointsr/vegan

> Ideally I would like to be fully raw

Can I ask why? It's less healthy and MUCH harder to get protein and nutrients.

Just eat beans, tofu, faux meats, avocados, nuts, seeds, quinoa, etc... and you'll be fine on protein. Don't set yourself up for failure by eating some crazy restrictive diet when there's really no reason to.

Also consider getting some Plant Fusion and blending that up with a frozen banana and almond milk for an easy dose of protein.

1- Lettuce and hot sauce. Super low calorie, super filling, amazingly delicious. I usually put iceberg lettuce with salsa verde, hot sauce, a chili ramen spices packet, and a lot of garlic powder. I eat this every day!

2- Dannon light and fit greek yogurt + protein powder. I use a flavorless kind that is 113 calories for 60g of protein. It mixes in super well and always helps me hit my protein macro. And it is delicious- some of the flavors are great to quell a sweet tooth!

Protein powder link for the curious: https://www.amazon.com/Musclegen-Research-Genepro-Medical-Servings/dp/B00K6OSDYA?th=1

3- HALO TOP HALO TOP HALO TOP

4- Hardboiled eggs are also great and very filling.

5- Canned salmon is a nice way to get around the mercury issues I was running into eating canned tuna every day for a while.

part 2/2

One of the things you have to do is decide where you want to draw the line for your own personal definition of the word "raw". A commonly-accepted definition of following a raw diet is that at least 75% of your food is either raw or is cooked at temperatures below 104F to 118F. Some people go 100% with no heating at all. This is really important to figure out because you have to decide how stringent you want to be. For example, "raw almonds" aren't actual raw, because current laws require pasteurization of all almonds in the United States - so no almonds, no almond butter, no almond milk, etc. if you are truly 100% raw. Two additional things to consider are dehydration & pasteurization:

  • Dehydrators can go from pretty cheap ($40) to expensive (hundreds of dollars, like the Excalibur models). These are useful for drying fruit, making crackers, and so on. Whether or not a dehydrator fits into your own personal definition of "raw" is up to you, but it does open a lot more doors for food options without having to actually "cook" the food like normal. You can do things like banana chips, zucchini chips, kale chips, fruit rollups (pureed fruit cooked on something like a Silpat or ParaFlexx sheets), "breads", cookies (macaroons etc.), and so on.
  • Milks are a nice option to have. You can do plenty of cold-pressed milks (ex. almond milk in a blender & strained with a cheesecloth), but for things like soymilk, you'll want to cook them. SoyaJoy has a nice milk-maker machine that does both raw & cooked (it handles grinding & boiling, right in the kettle). This again depends on the percentage raw you want to go. Whereas a dehydrator can cook low & slow safely, for stuff like soybeans, you have to soak them, grind them, and cook them to deactivate the enzyme inhibitors. So the machine does a 180F hot soak to get rid of the beany taste, grinds between 180F to 190F, and then cooks between 200 to 210F. Things like apple cider (in terms of raw apple juice) are typically also sold pasteurized, for food safety purposes. Again, it depends on where you want to draw the line, and what percentage raw you want to strive for.

Fourth, I'd recommend picking up the Thrive Diet book by triathlete Brendan Brazier. This book contains many raw vegan recipes. These are high-energy recipes as well, as the book is oriented towards athletic performance.

Fifth, you may want to look into growing & fermenting your own foods. A few starter ideas:

  • Orta seed starters
  • LED indoor herb gardens
  • Microgreens starter kit
  • Sprouting kit
  • Fermentation kit (can be done both raw & boiled)
  • Read up on Pickle Science
  • Read up on the Quickle
  • Vacuum-sealed Sauerkraut & Kimchi

Sixth, it's worth building up an inventory of great ingredients & recipes. A few starter ideas:

  • Raw vegan protein powder. There are a variety of brands & flavors available, such as this one with greens. It's an easy way to get protein into your body & hit your macros, especially when you don't have time to shop for fresh foods.
  • Aquafaba. This is the leftover goopy water from soaking beans. Raw note, as beans in cans are cooked, this is not a traditionally "raw" ingredient, so you'll either have to raw-soak the dry beans yourself, or if you're doing like 75% raw, you can include canned beans or say Instant Pot-cooked beans in your diet to get the aquafaba from that. Aquafaba kind of acts a bit like egg whites, which you can use to make butter, mayo, whipped cream (replace the sugar with raw cane sugar, for example), meringue cookies (read up on the notes about sugar in that recipe), etc. Note that if you want to stay ultra-raw, you'll want to use cold-pressed oils in conjunction with those recipes.
  • Apple cider vinegar is super easy to make
  • Bliss balls (lots of flavor options - cashew cacao, pink berry, salted caramel coconut, etc.)

    >I just threw out a bag of chips and decided it would be my last time ever buying anything like that. I don't want to buy anything processed again (after I eat up these remaining veggie dogs).

Food & health isn't so much of a destination, as a journey - learning what works best for your body, finding new ingredients, recipes, and tools, etc. Defining what path you want to take is important because that's what guides your day to day eating decisions, and also results in how good you feel, energy-wise. People generally go vegan for two reasons:

  1. A love for animals
  2. For health purposes

What often happens, in reality, is that people buy highly-processed fake meats (burgers, dogs, etc.), snack foods (potato chips, etc.), and junk food (dairy-free ice cream, candy, etc.) & then wonder why they don't feel good. Only you know how your body feels, so you have to figure out what works for you, which means trying new things, defining what your diet entails, learning about macros, and so on.

I've tried a variety of dietary approaches over the years (keto, paleo, low-carb, vegetarian, vegan, raw vegan, fruitarian, etc.), all with pretty good results. One of the biggest things I've discovered is that having a meal-prep system in place is critical to success, unless you have a lot of energy, free time, and a strong love of preparing food. I like to work in the kitchen...when I'm in the mood. The rest of the time, I need to feed my body my macros so that I feel good, look good, and am healthy, and really, I just need to fill the void when I get hungry & want something tasty.

So hopefully this gets you started in the right direction...there's an infinite amount of resources out there on the Internet, from raw vegan cheesecakes to walnut taco "meat". It also helps tremendously to eat according to your macros, and to figure out your eating schedule, which enables you to figure out a meal plan every week, instead of just winging it on a daily basis & struggling with being consistent & having consistent energy as a result.

My favorite high-protein breakfasts:

Protein shake (my favorite is Muscle Pharm banana cream - 130 cal/25g protein)

Pre-made frittata (keeps in the fridge for up to a week)

Greek yogurt with mix-ins (fruit, granola, nuts, etc.)

Boiled eggs

Pre-made frozen breakfast sandwiches (make yourself or store-bought)

Oatmeal with protein powder or PB2 mixed in

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Hope that helps.

u/RubyRedCheeks · 5 pointsr/vegan

I (and by "I" I mean I mix it up for my boyfriend) use a mix of NutriBiotic organic vanilla rice protein powder and Garden of Life organic greens protein powder. I also like Sunwarrior and MRM Veggie Elite powders!

I think they all taste great or like nothing at all, especially when blended with fruit or other flavors. If you're worried about palatability then just to them in the blender with some bananas and your favorite nut butter and you won't notice the powder at all.

u/JMAAB · 5 pointsr/keto

I got the powder as something to put in my drink while I cycle for some energy, it was almost triple the price of the liquid I use so it took a bit to try. In 3 months I have had about 4 servings. Now it says it can be used for cooking, baking etc and I may use it for that but I had zero luck with mixing it in a drink. It is like old protein powder, shake the shit out of it and there are still clumps, I even shook once for like 5 minutes, left it in the fridge overnight to dissolve, then shook some more for good measure and nope, still clumpy. It also foamed up, a lot. It was really chalky tasting to me and pretty hard to get down. I had to really scrub the hell out of it because that thick foam left residue everywhere.

Sorry for the rant, but you did ask for strong arguments!

u/kylekey · 5 pointsr/vegan

Also not a body builder but I do Garden of Life Meal Replacer every day, but if you're looking for just protein they've got that too.

Entirely raw, organic and sprouted protein from whole grains, beans, and seeds with fiber, probiotics and enzymes like protease, and no sugar. The meal replacer has the same amount of protein and probiotics/enzymes, but also adds complex carbs, more fiber, a tiny bit of fat, a green juice and fruit mix, and a ton of vitamins and minerals. The only downside is that there's a bit of brown rice syrup, but it's not enough to outweigh the enormous benefits.

u/RoboChrist · 5 pointsr/Futurology

There's Joylent for Europeans. There's a powder from a company called "Beyond Organic". Jevity is also out there.

Soylent is just marketing better than the rest, but it's made by a dude who is not a nutritionist or a businessman, and is making things up as he goes. Gotta give him credit for enthusiasm, but his logistics and production are not where they could be with his funding. And the actual nutrition profile is something that has been replicated elsewhere.

A good greens blend should be able to cover any nutritional deficiencies but you'll probably want to use several servings a day.

There are so many awesome superfood powder bramds out there. Just search superfood on Amazon.

I like Amazing Grass, and Garden of Life's Raw Meal and Green Superfood. Vibrant Health is good too.

Also, One-A-Day multis are terrible. PM me if you want my recommendations.

Beans and fortified cereals are your best sources of zinc, with some nuts being a close second. Beans and nuts are also a good protein source, so two birds.

If you are highly active, or your body just tends to do better with higher protein, you may want to consider using vegan protein powder as well. Some of them even have added vitamins and minerals. I use this meal replacement shake powder:

https://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Meal-Replacement-Gluten-Free/dp/B0031JK95S?th=1

Make a shake with a cup of cashew milk, raw meal replacer, 1/2 ounce of some peanut flour, and a banana and you get something like 40% of your daily recommended zinc intake and 33g of protein at around 450 calories.

u/denizenphoenix · 4 pointsr/fasting

I just finished 7 days of a pseudo water fast yesterday. Some days I had nothing, some a 0 calorie pickle or broth, two days I just had MCT oil with a serving of this https://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Organic-Greens-Protein/dp/B01A9IFE8K?th=1, and one morning I had 3 eggs with coconut oil. I went from 243->230. I am male/30s. Most of the 13 lbs. is water weight and emptying out digestive tract.

Vegan Crossfitter here whose loves her gainz:

Complex carbs are low GI, so think whole wheat bread and brown rice. Any that lists "whole <insert grain here>" is a good bet. Quinoa works, too, although not technically a grain.

It's super duper easy getting all your protein needs without dairy, and even without relying on soy. I eat a lot of nut butters (almond, peanut, cashew) and use nuts in a lot of my dishes (stir fry, salads, blended into sauces). Lentils and beans are good sources, but not my personal faves. Also, don't underestimate the protein content in foods not typically associated with protein. Examples: One serving (3 cups) of spring mix lettuce has 2g of protein; one serving cup of whole wheat pasta has 7.5g of protein. Eating a variety of plant-based foods will provide you with all essential amino acids. Gainz brah.

I also LOVE Vega Performance Protein powder (vanilla and chocolate flavors are best). A bit pricey, but high quality, soy-free. Less tasty (IMO) but cheaper and still soy-free is Plant Fusion. With either powder, I like to blend it with almond milk, ice, and maybe a few spoonfuls of peanut butter. Drink post-workout. I also use that mixture as a base for green smoothies for my morning breakfast.

Edit: correction (see strikeout)

u/mandiejackson · 4 pointsr/Vitamix

I just bought this and in the mornings (around 7 am) I blend a scoop of that, about 8 ounces west soy unsweetened soy milk, 2 big handfuls of spinach, 2 medium bananas, and a 1/2 cup frozen blueberries. Fills up a quart mason jar and keeps me going until noon.

u/rangerpax · 4 pointsr/xxfitness

After many years of searching, Plant Fusion is my fav. Been using it for years now. It's good on its own, but I put it in coconut milk, put in a bit of cinnamon (good for you!), and whisk until frothy. No dairy, not gritty, has high protein and virtually no carbs. Comes in unflavored too.

u/JudithButlr · 4 pointsr/xxfitness

I really like the blend I’ve come up with. Flaxmilk is wayyyy better than almond milk as far as taste and texture in my opinion. I like this powder in the vanilla and chocolate mocha flavors - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0052ONXWQ?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title

My boyfriend likes the taste a lot and asked me to start making him one with mine if the endorsement helps lol. It helps settle my stomach when I’m hungry but it is not great for fillingness to calories ratio, but I get thru work with 800 calories to spare for dinner and a snack and that’s really nice.

Ease your way into being a vegetarian, if that’s your goal. Even cutting down to two meals a week with meat will make a big difference - being vegetarian doesn’t necessarily have to be all or nothing. I don’t like the way that “purity politics” play into a more veggie lifestyle. If you’re a vegetarian every day except a reward steak on Friday night, I would respect you way more than a vegetarian who meat shames and eats mac n cheese or pizza every meal. I started by only eating meat in restaurants and not buying it anymore. Winter sadly is a lot harder to not eat meat, so go easy on yourself.

Try Field Roast Apple and smoked sage veggie sausage, Trader Joes soyrizo, and their veggie burgers (Black Bean, Thai, and Pizza ones are SO GOOD). Check out the monthly seasonal vegetables/meal ideas on cookieandkate.com. I also love smittenkitchen.com

This was my concern and my experience up till now, someone above mentioned https://smile.amazon.com/PlantFusion-Complete-Protein-Chocolate-Servings/dp/B0021FAITU/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1510284945&sr=8-2&keywords=plant%2Bfusion&th=1 Plant Fusion, which as far as I can tell doesn't have the NON-GMO label.

u/SparklingLimeade · 3 pointsr/soylent

You do it the same way you would for a reduced calorie diet of other food. Eat nutritionally dense food and in extreme cases take a multivitamin. Soylent limits things by setting a single nutritional density so for a pure Soylent diet this leaves only supplementation so we can enumerate the options.

First, in the case of moderate calorie reductions there is no need to adjust anything. I'd like to put some numbers here but because dieting and nutrition is so poorly understood I couldn't find any good numbers. I'd say that for 1500 Calories and up it shouldn't be a concern.

For uncommonly low calorie diets micronutrient supplementation is a potentially beneficial option. Normal multivitamin pills are meant to be taken alongside food so you could find one and take that. Everything they have in excess should be fine. Multivitamin powders also exist and could make supplementation exceptionally convenient and customizable. The only one I can recommend off the top of my head is Garden of Life Raw Meal. It seems popular with some people around here and should suit as a supplement to a heavily calorie reduced Soylent diet.

u/chudslayer · 3 pointsr/soylent

Maybe try replacing the multivitamin with something like Garden Of Life Raw Meal. It is a natural source of all the same vitamins which means better absorption and nutritional value. http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Raw-Meal-lbs/dp/B0031JK95S

u/gusslover · 3 pointsr/HealthyFood

I like Garden of Life Meal Replacement -... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CLD74VC?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf plant based protein meal replacement. Better than Soylant.

> I AM working on things though...just small steps

Keep it up, you can do this. I've lost almost 50lbs since April, 262 down to 215. I drank so much Mt Dew it was insane. The key for me was to count macros - I have done zero exercise. Everyone's heard of counting calories, counting macros is the next step. Calories come from fat, carbs, and protein. I used iifym.com to figure out the macros I needed to be eating to lose weight, then went from there. Now I have a double-scoop of protein powder for breakfast, a protein bar for mid-morning snack, a ton of chicken+half a cucumber+an apple for lunch, a scoop of almonds for a mid-afternoon snack, then a salad and a slab of tilapia for dinner. All that gets me around 1900 calories (40% from fat, 40% protein, 20% carbs) and I never get hungry. I use myfitnesspal to help keep track of what I eat. As for soda, I cut it out completely at first and used caffeinated Mio to help with the caffeine headaches until I discovered Vanilla Coke Zero. Now I drink that when I need a caffeinated beverage. For lunches, I meal-prep the chicken/veggies for the week on Sundays then grab my meal on my way out the door in the morning. My snacks are kept in a drawer at work, and I keep a half-gallon of almond milk in the fridge for the protein powder. Having pre-made salads has been a life-saver as well. I'd never eat a salad if I had to make it from scratch. I can change meals up as I need if I get sick of something and binging a meal or two a week on pizza or whatever hasn't affected my progress. It's been pretty easy to stick to it, and the results speak for themselves. Keep it simple, keep the healthy stuff readily available, and watch it work.

u/zo1d · 3 pointsr/Fitness

What do you dislike about using 2 scoops? Is it the additional calories, or value for money? Because I just compared it with 4 other random protein powders on Amazon (on the first page of results), and at current prices, you get considerably more protein per dollar than the others.

protein per serving * servings per container / price

EAS: 49.8
BSN: 26.4
MusclePharm: 32.5
MyProtein: 22.7
ON: 30.6

Edit: For the record, the place I've been buying EAS from sells it for $40/5lb bag, so I've been getting about 37.7g/$

u/ceeface · 3 pointsr/stilltrying

I've tried pretty much every vegan protein powder out there, and my top favorites are Garden of Life Greens & Protein and Orgain Organic Protein-- both in chocolate. I've tried Aloha recently and was not thrilled with the flavor or texture at all, so I'd skip that brand. Vega is okay but is more expensive than the rest and is not organic, so I just crossed it out on my list.

If you need to add more protein and require a vegetarian option, I'd just suggest quinoa, beans, legumes, eggs, and nuts. I've been a vegetarian for more than half of my life, and those have always been my go-to's. But if having issues eating in general is hard, just do a double serving of protein powder a day (in a green smoothie for extra calories/nutrition) to meet those goals.

u/syam3000 · 3 pointsr/xxfitness

I LOVE SunWarrior protein (I've only tried vanilla and stuck with that). It is a bit pricey, but amazing! I get it from Amazon or Vitacost (http://www.amazon.com/Sunwarrior-Warrior-Blend-Protein-Vanilla/dp/B005WLY4L8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421711066&sr=8-1&keywords=sunwarrior)

I normally do 2 scoops of protein, 1 TBSP of peanut or almond butter, 2 cups of soy or almond milk and 1 banana. This is a loaded drink - about 500 calories. However, I usually split this between after breakfast and after lunch, but it would be enough to replace breakfast. This sounds like a lot of calories, but this has not made me bulk up at all... the only way to really bulk up as females, would be if we have excess body fat (this looks bulky over muscles), wayyyy excessive calories, or extremes like steroids or possibly hormone imbalances. Otherwise, you don't have to worry!

u/JustarianCeasar · 3 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

Simple and easy way to get more protein into your diet. When looking at the nutrition label, if it says "Nutrition facts" the contents have been verified by a relatively strict process. if it says "Supplement facts" the actual content is allowed to vary a lot from what's listed on the label.

If you're looking for a meal replacement, I've found that Muscle Milk brand powder works well. If you're just wanting a protein supplement, I really like the flavours of Optimum Nutrition and they're relatively low carb. If you're trying to lean more towards the vegetarian side of things, Garden of Life is an excellent option as well. Although I personally think the texture is pretty "gritty" the flavours aren't bad.

Regardless of what you choose, if you do some price comparison among top brands, you'll find it to be a fairly good deal in price/calorie compared to pre-packaged foods. Almost all of the powders are going to be a healthy option for adding to your diet. For myself, I've found protein shakes to be the best small meal replacement for when I'm trying to cut weight, and a great source for extra calories to add between each meal if I'm trying to bulk up.

Yeah people in this thread are suggesting blending fruits and veggies. Supplementing with a vegan protein shake sounds like a great suggestion. I've only ever had one brand of protein shake but I can vouch for this one.

u/theriotismagic · 3 pointsr/insanity

A couple years ago I got "duped" into signing up as a coach, not to sell beachbody products, but to get discounts on them. I did the Shakeology thing for a few months, but decided to cancel. It tastes great and is dense nutritionally. It was way too expensive though. If you don't eat enough fruits/veggies and are looking for a recovery/meal replacement it's a decent, albeit expensive option. Now I eat like 70% paleo, stay away from dairy and wheat, and use Sun Warrior's protein powder with added chia and flax seeds. I've seen equal if not better benefits by doing this than when I was drinking Shakeology.

BSN SYNTHA-6 Protein Powder - Chocolate Milkshake, 5.0 lb (48 Servings) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002DYJ1EC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_LIjHybCNAQ0HJ

Best tasting powder brand I've had. All the flavors I've had are amazing and it's good protein. Take that and actual brewed coffee and you have a great morning. Take some cold brew mix it and toss in some ice after there's a good lunch.
Basically you pay for what you get especially with protein, and this isn't even an expensive brand. But if you go to Walmart and buy their offbrand stuff and expect good tasting and good protein you're gonna be surprised.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/P90X

This is the bare minimum for what I need when I do p90x.

  • 10 lb dumbbell
  • 20 lb dumbbell
  • 30 lb dumbbell

Over time, you can collect more and more. I now have dumbbells ranging from 5-40lbs, but I think I need to get some 50 or 60 lbs as well.

  • pull-up bar.

As for supplements, these are what I use.

Protein: Helps with recovery and building muscle.

Creatine: Generally helps with endurance/energy during exercises. I found when I began including this in my supplementation, I could usually do a few more reps, which really helps you with muscular hypotrophy, which helps you wear out your muscles more in a workout, so they breakdown and rebuild.

I also use BCAA and a fish oil supplement, but this is a good starting point.
u/Lightning14 · 2 pointsr/Supplements

Complete protein veggie supplements tend to be pricier than whey and soy protein powders. I use this. It's the best bang for your buck that I have found. Just look at the list of ingredients (including amino-acid profile), but beware that it has xylitol and stevia in it, so it is very sweet tasting. To balance that, I find it goes well in a smoothie with kale and spirulina (I also add creatine, flax, unsweetened almond milk, half a banana, and lots of water/ice for a great breakfast smoothie). The other option, as you said, is to just supplement with amino acids.

u/VerySkeptikal · 2 pointsr/keto

Why would he consume so much? I don't know of anyone who recommends that much at once. If you want MCT oil with less of a GI effect, try it in powder form and use it in your coffee:

Happy Birthday!

I literally just opened my amazon order before reading this. I got these yoga blocks and strap. Price is awesome for 2 blocks and strap. Can't ask for more. And this 12lb double handle medicine ball. I haven't used it yet but I love how it feels. Also price is great compared to other sellers. Gonna get a yoga wheel next.

Protein powder-wise, I've only ever tried this one in chocolate and hated it. I tried it plain with just water and then tried to make a shake with banana, peanut butter, etc and I couldn't finish it for anything. Just disgusting and I'm not a picky eater. hate the texture. This is the only protein powder I've ever tried though so grain of salt and all. Hope you get some good stuff!

I agree, don't use soy. I use plantfusion from amazon

http://www.amazon.com/PlantFusion-Supplement-Natural-Unflavored-Pound/dp/B0021F8HH0

It was recommended by Ed Bauer, who is pretty ripped, so it works. It also just is cheaper per gram of protein than all those other things at whole foods, has a complete Amino Acid profile and no fiber style stomach ache like Vega.

Qwest protein powder is the best I've been able to find. https://www.amazon.com/Quest-Nutrition-Protein-Vanilla-Milkshake/dp/B00PDV0QCI There are other flavors. I mix it with Kite Hill almond yogurt plain (0 carb), almond milk (0) and ground flax seed (net 0). Walmart carries it as do n other grocery stores. Pick up a pack or two (single serving) and give it a try.

Why do you think stimulants are the only way to boost your energy ? How is your diet ? If that's not ideal, nothing else is going to help.

For me drinking a good protein shake in the morning (along with some green tea powder mixed in it) helps the most. Good Protein is not a stimulant but sustains energy through out the day. That could be a start. Example products I have liked:

BCAA's are just specific amino acid chains (specific proteins) for building muscle.

Honestly, if you aren't using weights yet you really don't need to worry about them, something to look at in a year or so.

When people talk about protein drinks for working out they are usually talking about one of two things. The first is Whey Protein Isolates (WPIs). This is concentrated protein from whey, which is from milk. WPIs digest quickly, and would not help very much in the way of a meal replacement.

The second is Casein which is also derived from milk, but a different part. This is much thicker and digests slower. I have used it as a sort of meal replacement to help with hunger.

Both of these though are just a way of easily getting more protein into your diet. As a guy trying to build or maintain muscle while resistance training, you want a fairly large amount, some say (.8)*(your lean body weight in lbs) = (# of grams of protein to eat). It can be hard to get that much protein from normal foods especially on a deficit, or you get tired of eating a lb of chicken a day, so drinking a protein shake or 2 and getting 25g of protein for only 120 calories is useful.

Also what I linked you are not any dangerous supplements or anything if anyone tries to fear monger them, they are literally just concentrated parts from milk.

u/dreiter · 2 pointsr/veganfitness

It totally depends on the product. The flavored options are the priciest but are usually your best bet for flavor and texture. Something like Plant Fusion goes on sale often and has a pretty decent flavor/texture profile. If you just get a plain pea/rice blend then the flavor and texture are....quite challenging. Out of laziness and frugalness I usually buy a Plantfusion tub on sale and then mix it with an unflavored rice protein to help reduce the sweetness and cost. It's not a perfect solution but it works well enough I think.

u/fehrsway · 2 pointsr/ketogains

I saw a recipe that uses pork rinds as a “batter”, I’ve never tried it but it’s a neat idea for keto fried chicken. Outside of that, it’s the only real use of pork rinds on keto in my opinion... it’s not exactly a solid source of nutrition and even the packaging says not a significant source of protein (at the last bag I had said it in the nutrition facts).

I get downvoted every time I say it, but while saturated fats have always been blown way out of proportion, in my opinion it still may not be wise for you to get say 90% of your calorie intake from saturated fats, especially if you are of a certain genetic variation (I’ll have to look into exactly what that is), and I’m not entirely informed on the longevity affects of a high saturated fat diet, even in the context of a very low carb diet. Avocados, natural peanut butter from the machine at Kroger, macadamia nuts, EV olive oil - MUFAs are my primary fat source with around 35 grams (+/- 10 grams) coming from saturated fats. Olive oil in everything. I’ll make tuna with boiled eggs, mayo, mustard, a tbsp of EVOO and pink salt/pepper/paprika, pretty much daily lunch. Sometimes it’s chicken instead of tuna. I don’t shy away from beef at all, but I still limit it to 2-3 times a week, because I’m also eating salmon 2-3 times a week.

I also regularly make a smoothie that is for sure not that keto because of the higher carb content, but on days I have it - it’s the only carbohydrates I have... kale, spinach, avocado, Garden of Life Raw Meal (the vanilla chai or chocolate flavor), hydrolyzed collagen, that fresh Kroger peanut butter, a half cup or so blueberries, about 2 cups water or almond milk if that’s your thing, ice, blend that baby up. You get use to the texture.

These are just things I do, but there are multiple ways to skin this keto cat. For the record, I’m a male, 28yo I stand between 5’10 - 5’11 and started at 240 and weighed in this morning at 174, last did my tape measurements and my body fat was at 27%... still on the path

Good luck to you!

Protein smoothies control my hunger for a long time. Pea protein powder or some other combo protein powder might be something you could try. Add in some fruit and greens and maybe even ginger ale. Alternatively, Plant Fusion is also a nice brand if you don't mind stevia. The only protein smoothie powder I do not recommend is Vega. Wow, did that suck.

u/art3m1sm00n · 2 pointsr/loseit

I just recently settled on Plant Fusion after discovering I can't tolerate whey protein. Its soy, dairy, rice, etc free, has a pretty well rated purity, and has bcaas and a pretty good amino acid profile. I've tried vanilla, chocolate, and cookies and cream. I stuck with vanilla because the taste is the most easily blended with other stuff.

u/eukdole · 2 pointsr/Nootropics

I really like this brand of powdered MCT oil. I find that it tastes great (kind of creamy) and mixes in to liquids better than regular MCT oil. I usually add it into protein shakes as well. Besides that it's not really that much of a difference. It's a little more expensive than regular MCT oil, but still not as much as Bulletproof's version of mct oil.

u/iiEos · 2 pointsr/Fitness

>all I want is a little boost on my gains

Sadly there is no supplement for this, unless you count protein powder...

Honestly all you need is some plain creatine monohydrate, and solid whey protein.

If you are under 40 you don't need a pre-workout, you should have natural energy and you can just eat a piece of fruit before hitting the gym, all you are paying for in most supplements is caffeine. Granted I would say caffeine is a welcomed boost after a low sleep night.

In summary

u/duckydoom · 2 pointsr/loseit

It tastes good and does indeed have vital nutrients. You'll lose weight if you follow their directions, but it's honestly all about portion control and tracking your food. I tried the vegan stuff for a month and it was super handy to have for my road trip to help me avoid crap foods, but I know I personally couldn't maintain it long term.

If you're just looking for occasionally supplementing meals, I recommend checking out Amazon. I buy a tub of [Plant Fusion Vanilla Bean]( PlantFusion Protein Vanilla Bean 2lb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0021FEMZG/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_j2JGub1QP9GYC) every couple months and my husband and I both love it for on the go meals. u/AshesToAether · 2 pointsr/loseit

Personally my favorite was Garden of Life, Raw Meal. The flavor and texture aren't the best I've had, but it was solid enough for me to enjoy. The big reason I like it is that since it's basically just blended sprouts, it's high in fiber and sits very solid in your stomach. You walk away feeling like you had a light salad. Fiber is pretty great to have when dieting and skipping meals. Also, I had better luck with hunger and satiation with it than other drinks, and it was lower in sugar.

It's not for everyone though, as the flavor is mild, bitter, and earthy. It's really just lightly flavored sprout powder. If you're the kinda person who drinks their coffee strong and black, you might be good with it. If you mostly drink sweetened products, I'd try whey first. Whey drinks are often far better flavored and mix smoother.

u/Razecew · 2 pointsr/vegan

I run almost everyday for at least half an hour and also do some light weight training. I'd recommend looking into some meal replacement shakes. They're great!

u/Ryvius- · 2 pointsr/StackAdvice

There are a couple products/companies that I stand by.

  • Thorne Research
  • Pure Essence Labs LifeEssence Multivitamin - Do not take if you're on anything that interacts with grapefruit. Also very smelly, due to the seaweed. But overall PACKED with all kinds of nutrients.
  • One of the Garden of Life multivitamins, for whatever your demographic is
  • Garden of Life Raw Organic Meal - Just avoid chocolate. Vanilla is good. Contains entirely food sourced nutrients, with 20 grams of plant protein per serving.

All of these products are either plant sourced or otherwise contain the more "active" versions of the compounds, ie. Methylcobalamin (B12) over Cyanocobalamin (B12). It's still debated whether this matters for a multivitamin, but theoretically, and also from anecdotal experience, I feel that food sourced and non synthetic compounds perform better.

GNC is very middle of the road. Many multivitamins make faulty claims on the contents of the product, but GNC does less of this. I used to work there. They sell Garden of Life, however, and whenever possible I would direct customers to that brand, which makes higher quality products at a very fair price. GNC, however, is taking a very bad direction in their sales tactics and other frantic reforms in a last ditch effort to save their company from the retail bust. I would not be surprised if their products have declined in quality as well, but I quit back in April, so I don't know.
u/TopDogChick · 2 pointsr/veganfitness

No probs, the kind I got was their all-in-one kind, which has all the essential amino acids, plus some other vitamins and some omega-3. Both the chocolate and vanilla flavors are great, but I would recommend making sure to use a banana and pb for sure, otherwise it isn't as sweet and fatty tasting. I picked mine up at Albertsons, but you can also grab it on amazon:

Hope that gives you some good info!

My breakfast every morning is: one scoop of this delicious vegan protein powder, 8 ounces Almond Breeze chocolate almond milk, and 8 ounces of water shaken up in my blender bottle. It holds me over until lunch since the protein powder has about 17 grams of protein and tons of other good stuff in it. It's somewhat pricy, but when you think about it, it lasts me through the month, and the almond milk doesn't cost that much. It's a great breakfast for 275 calories, especially since it holds me over until lunch (no snack in between).

u/Want_Bourbon · 2 pointsr/Fitness

I drink this for a meal replacement on a pretty basis. It has a great macro breakdown and is pretty filling. They have a vanilla chai flavor which is the best tasting in my opinion, but the chocolate isn't bad either. I'd avoid the regular vanilla and I haven't tried unflavored, but I don't imagine it being pleasant. Oh, and it all tastes better if mixed with almond milk or another flavored drink.

u/B3z · 2 pointsr/vegan

I tried HempForce, but liked Garden Life, Chocolate much better. I add Hemp, Cocao, and Maca for extra protein, flavor, and energy boost.

u/dihard · 2 pointsr/Fitness

Try Garden of Life Raw Meal. Only thing it's low on is fat. I just mix in some milk or coconut milk and it's pretty much a completely balanced meal.

u/Cat_Cam · 2 pointsr/loseit

I do! This is my current recipe

  • I use this Protein Powder for the base. (sensitive to dairy)
  • I add about 1/2 almond milk and about 1/2-3/4 cup of water
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tablespoon maca powder
  • 1 teaspoon green tea powder (I enjoy the taste)
  • 1 date for a little sweetness
  • Handful of baby spinach

I use a blender to make it all smooth because I find that non-dairy protein powders to be very grainy otherwise.

However, you could mix in either Powdered MCT Oil, Powdered Coconut Oil or both into you powder to meat you macros and then just mix on site with no liquid transport required.

There are some high quality vegan protein powders. I'm not a body builder so I'm no expert, but I do enjoy making protein smoothies and use PlantFusion brand powder. I'm sure there is better quality out there but it's good enough for my purposes. Edit: there are also plenty of protein bars as well as just plain high protein plants (spirulina is apparently big with vegan body builders).

There is a large community of vegan bodybuilders out there. Just Google it. (As I don't really know anything about body building, I don't want to send you in the wrong direction.)

Without trying, I get about 70 g protein per day.

I have heard/read multiple times that you should try to consume about 1g of protein for every lb of body weight on average. There are a number of resources like : http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bbprotein.htm which will give you grams of protein per body weight for other goals as well.

So for you at 92kg (about 200lb) you should try to get about 200g of protein a day, mostly from complete meals with powder etc thrown in.

Also read about the different powders on forums like bodybuilding.com, mensfitness.com etc. as well as the nutritional labels of the powder itself. I say this because if you compare 100% Gold Standard Whey ON to Syntha-6 BSN you will see that the serving size is different, 30g scoop ON to 47g scoop BSN but also the protein mix is different.

Currently I use an ON like protein that provides about 20g of protein per 30g scoop of powder and take it about 3x a day (1scoop @ in breakfast shake, 30-40min before workout w/ water, in the afternoon w/water)

Thank you! I followed that link and learned that it's sulfur-containing amino acids (cystine and methionine) that you need 2 grams per day of, not elemental sulfur! And here I was about to buy a ton of MSM from amazon to get my sulfur intake up.

So my follow-up question would be whether all brands of whey protein have a similar ratio of total protein to SSA? (For example this one makes no mention of SSAs so is there a chance that doing a 100% keto chow diet using it will make me drop dead in 2 weeks from a sulfur deficiency?)

It's a little cheaper than Soylent, and if you mix it with Orgain Unsweetened Vanilla + Protein, you'll have your protein and basic vitamins covered. You can add the superfood powders you mention, complex carbs like grains or simpler carbs as fruits. Personally, I wouldn't do it that way, but as you said, it would be better than a lot of people's diets these days. I like Garden of Life Raw Meal here. It's 120 calories with 20g fat. The chocolate flavor is good and it isn't very sweet. I usually just mix it with a cup of almond milk.

u/taintertots · 1 pointr/Fitness

Thanks for the reply, I do have a shaker bottle, one I use for my protein powder. Do homemade shakes last very long in the fridge if you pre-make them?

Currently, this is what I am taking:

https://www.amazon.com/BSN-SYNTHA-6-Chocolate-Milkshake-Servings/dp/B002DYJ1EC/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1487020386&sr=1-1&keywords=syntha%2B6%2Bprotein%2Bpowder&th=1

Good amount of protein, and calories, not so much on the cards however.

u/PhotonicDoctor · 1 pointr/Fitness

Forget protein only stuff. You need a full meal because that has vitamins, minerals, fiber, and all the protein you need. I drink this with fat free milk and a banana mixed in a blender. http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Organic-Meal-Chocolate/dp/B007S6Y6VS/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1413684235&sr=1-1&keywords=meal+replacement Best meal there is cause its organic, no fillers and other crap. Cheaper on Amazon trust me. iHerb or Amazon for best deal.

I've been using this protein for years, it was way better 3 years ago before the company got bought by Nestle and the formula changed but it's still solid IMO

I use about 1tbsp Chia Seeds and 5g creatine (I just use a scoop that gives me about 5g, not worth the time to measure exactly)

If you sweat a lot and are prone to cramps / headaches from losing too many minerals, zinc and magnesium are good to supplement

I am not a qualified health professional though - this is just what works for me based on my own 5+ years of research & direct experience. Take it how you will

u/joesavu · 1 pointr/schizophrenia

best one probably is the optimum nutrition gold standard I've tasted. I currently take musclepharm combat protein as it is a bit cheaper, but it can be sweet. I also mix half of it with kirkland vanilla soymilk to give it better taste and it has a good amount of protein in it as well.

What I like about the whey protein is that it has the ability to help me recover faster after an episode. This one I take, it has fast and slow digestion:

I always add a scoop of this to my oatmeal in the mornings and it adds an extra 20g of protein to my day. The ingredients are stellar, I don’t think there’s anything in there that isn’t directly sourced from a plant, other than maybe probiotics.

You could throw it in a smoothie too! Drinking it on its own certainly isn’t my favorite, but you may disagree!

>At the moment I'm considering: organic brown rice, hemp and pea protein, coconut oil powder/coconut powder, ground up leafy greens, ground up chia seeds and some kind of flavouring

That sounds pretty good to me and similar to what I drink, adjusted as needed. Are you asking if I would be interested in an all-in-one product like that? Not particularly, unless it was very competitive in price to plain protein. My GF is fond of this all-in-one nutritional shake. At first glance, the only thing this includes that your shake is missing would be the pre/pro biotics, the digestive enzymes and perhaps a fortified vitamin or two that would be missing. If I were interested in a product like that, this is what I would buy.

I mistype my weight meant to write 128lbs not 118. Is there a difference between Gold standard whey and then this protein powder?

I've been using a meal replacement called Raw Meal. It isn't made to replace eggs but it is super high in protein (34 grams per serving) and a whole slew of other nutrients. I've only had the chocolate kind thus far and I'm going to get the Vanilla Chai once I'm out of this stuff because the chocolate has a really earthy taste. It's probably the ingredients seeing as it is mostly sprouts, but it is worth a shot. I also tried it with soy milk once, horrible mistake. It took on the consistency of boogers and was really hard to drink. It is much better with just water and I throw in a teaspoon or two of raw sugar just to add to the drinkability. It is starting to grow on me though, I have only been using it it for about 2 weeks and I feel strong and just all around great. I think it has been giving me a lot of the vitamins and nutrients I need as a vegan and it is quickly becoming a staple in my diet. I have it every morning for breakfast/lunch and ever since I started on it I feel so energetic and my body has been operating quite smoothly. =] Hope that helps! Good luck to you! Oh and since you aren't in the states you would have to order it off of amazon or something like it. Here's the link to the amazon page for it. http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Raw-Meal-lbs/dp/B0031JK95S

I get the Muscle Pharm Combat Powder Cookies and Cream from Costco! It tastes really good in shakes, baking, etc. 140 calories/25 g protein. It's cheaper at Costco but here it is on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Muscle-Pharm-Combat-Cookies-4-Pounds/dp/B004EHXKU2

I use quest protein powder...comes in a large tub and it's 1 point for one scoop. The salted caramel is really good! If I have the extra points, I'll mix it with milk, but I usually just mix it with water and it tastes fine. https://www.amazon.com/Quest-Nutrition-Protein-Milkshake-Packaging/dp/B00PDV0QCI/ref=sr_1_4_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1527275910&sr=1-4&keywords=quest+protein+powder

I've also used Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey powder (it's 2 points per scoop): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G4MA4B8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

You could replace a meal with a meal replacement drink, like this one that's organic Garden of Life Raw Meal. It could work as a snack too if you use less of the powder.

You could also make your own almond milk by blending a cup of water with two teaspoons or a tablespoon of almond butter.

u/joleme · 1 pointr/Fitness

A few months ago a friend gave me a tub of protein powder that he didn't like the flavor of and basically told me I could drink a shake in the morning instead of breakfast. I tried it and it tasted fine and it keeps me from overeating in the breakfast if I only have access to the shake.

It was this

My question is.... is it a bad thing to have these shakes if I'm just trying to shave off some calories and to help me stay away from food in the morning?

Long story short I have an unhealthy relationship with food obviously and sometimes it just seems like I go on autopilot and eat and then sit back and realize I just ate 2 double cheeseburgers and hate myself.

If you want to hit the sweet spot in a ketogenic diet, you should be getting about 70% of your calories from fat and 20+% from protein. That is a TON of fat... between keto-induced appetite suppression and the realities of Western food culture, I have to get super creative to keep my calorie intake high enough to support my workout regimen and my fat calories at around 70%. Products like this coffee are major tools. Another one I really like is the Quest Powdered MCT Oil product. Between that and the coffee I probably mark up about 1,000 fat calories a day.

That reminds me, I should do a post on BCAAs and exogenous ketones! :)

Try Quest Nutrition MCT Powder https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016APVE5S/
MiCkey T Eight Pure C-8 Caprylic Acid MCT

Both are good and won't give you disaster pants.

u/Chullachaqui · 1 pointr/bjj

I haven't been doing BJJ that long, but I did Muay Thai for a good while while on a vegan diet. The key is to get a lot of protein and to get it from a lot of different sources. Animal protein is "complete" protein (contains sufficient quantities of every single one of the amino acids that your body needs) while plant protein tends to be deficient in one amino acid or the other. However, if you combine different foods (rice and beans, etc) then you can get a complete mix of amino acids without a problem. For me, it's really that simple. Eat a lot of good, high-protein stuff (lentils, chickpeas, quinoa, rice, peanut butter, almonds, whatever) and eat a wide variety of things throughout the day.

Also, to supplement, try this and this. I mix a scoop of each of those with some soymilk and water and it makes me feel awesome.

Edit: fucked up the links

As someone who's had the surgery. I remember when I got completely disgusted with the shakes. I could barely keep them down.

  1. You will never meet your protein goal within the first 6 months. Nobody tells you that, but they don't want you to lower your goals. I've never met a single person who's had surgery who hit their protein goals. Cut back on the shakes so you don't make yourself so sick. I got less than 10% of my protein goal until about 7 months. It just wasn't possible.

  2. Stop hurting yourself with food. One size does not fit all for weight loss. Even if your doctor tells you what you need to hit, everyone is different. Eat until you are comfortable.

  3. Sugar Free Popsicles. I cannot tell you enough how much this changed my life. I still eat them a 1.3 years out. I'd have them to take away my grouchy hunger, and the cold eased my throat and stomach.

  4. Again, stop forcing the protein. Yes you need protein but your body is telling you something. It needs you to go easier.

  5. I still don't enjoy cottage cheese or hummus anymore from having to eat so much of them. Try to vary your foods, and Wendy's Chill is AMAZING (i never ate there before surgery) and it goes down easy in the first few months. It lifted my spirits and gave made me happy. Lots of protein too.

  6. Consider stopping the Zofran, and Reglan for a few days while cutting your entire protein shake for the day down to 8 oz. I'm not a doctor, so you need to do your own research. I can tell you this is EXACTLY what I did when I was so sick on protein and miserable, and it solved almost everything. The meds were actually making it worse. I stayed off them a week and never went back on. I stopped taking large protein shakes completely after 3months. I switched to 1 tablespoon of Genepro which was 30 grams of protein. It truly had no taste. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K6OSDYA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

  7. Just don't be so strict or hard on yourself. You'll do fine, but you need to listen to your body

  8. Good Luck, keep your spirits up. When I lost 40lbs I thought it was Amazing, then when I lost 80lbs i felt 100x better. Then 5000x better with the last 20lbs. It's amazing. You are gonna be health, and fit and most importantly happy to be alive.
